Isolationism: a nation should interact politically as little as possible with other nations so that it can stay out of war. (p.440) 2. Internationalist Promotes cooperation between nations. An active role in international affairs is the best way to pursue national security. (The U.S. doesn t trust other countries and an occasional show of force is necessary in order to serve our national interest or the country s economic, military or cultural goals) 3. Neoisolationist : - Foreign policy involvement should be kept at a minimum for benefit of U.S. and the world. - Let countries determine their own fate. - History has shown interference hasn t been widely accepted. - Believe intervention results in getting into prolonged war. 4. Idealism - Generally take an internationalist approach. - Defending human rights is the guiding light of idealism. - Opposes alliances with authoritarian govts. (even if helpful to U.S. interests) - Some Idealists accept military intervention in certain circumstances

How many people work in the Department of Defense? - 675,000 civilians - 1.4 million members of the armed services - Many work in the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. 5. Identify the officers in the Joint Chiefs of Staff - They are the leaders of the different military branches. - Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. - Their job is to advise the Secretary and the President. 6. Identify what the letters CIA stand for and list the 3 things it does - CIA stands for CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY - This group gathers, analyzes and presents information to the President and the National Security Council.

Identify the Monroe Doctrine - 1823 policy from President James Monroe that declared the intentions of the United States to be Neurtral when it came to international affairs. - Further requested European nations to stay out of the Americas (West. Hemis) 2. List the dates of 4 major wars mentioned in the reading - Spanish / American war 1898 (lasted only 4 months) - World War I 1914 ( U.S. entered in 1917) - World War 2 1939 (U.S. entered in 1941 due to Pearl Harbor) - Korean War 1950 3. What is the deterrence theory - Policy of the U.S. to build up its military strength in an effort to discourage military action of other countries. ( Basically show how big we were in hopes it would scare everybody from trying to start anything) 4. Identify the theory of containment - Basic U.S. foreign policy starting in 1947 that centered around the idea of containing the potential spread of communism. - Communism threatened democratic values and that Soviet expansion must be stopped. - 5. Identify the Korean War - Following WW2, The country of Korea was divided into 2 separate countries (North and South Korea) - In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to bring South Korea under Communist rule. - In response, the United Nations sent troops to help defend S. Korea. (The United States was a major contributor of troops) - The war lasted 3 years and ended with simply a peace treaty to end fighting in 1953. 6. Identify the Cuban Missile Crisis - In 1962 the Soviet Union began secretly installing nuclear weapons in Cuba. - President Kennedy announced a naval blockade to stop ships heading to Cuba. - For 6 days, a standoff occurred as Soviet ships approached Cuba. - Eventually the Soviets agreed to withdraw the missiles.
