Position: Care assistant working with elderly people in Nursing Care Homes Length of contract: from end June/beginning July End August Mid September 2012 (you must complete 8 weeks of work plus 3 days of training on top of this as a minimum) Work Location: Our client has got 65 Care homes in the different areas of Northern Ireland, so the particular Care home were will you be working will be confirmed closer to the departure date however this will be mainly in Belfast area. Level of English: Candidate should read, write and communicate in English to a suitable degree {B1} Client: Four Seasons Health Care JOB DESCRIPTION: 1) JOB TITLE: CARE ASSISTANT 2) REPORTS TO: Nurse / Senior Carer in charge * all staff report through their supervisor to the Home Manager 3) PURPOSE OF JOB: Under the supervision of nursing/senior care staff, work as part of a team to deliver excellent standards of care to residents. Care will be carried out in accordance with individual care plans, whilst promoting privacy and dignity and enhancing independence, rehabilitation and personal choice. 4) MAIN JOB ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: All job activities and responsibilities are to be carried out in accordance with the attached Ethos of 2

Care and Personal Responsibility Framework and in line with all current Four Seasons Policies and Procedures. MAIN JOB ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with Resident mobility, changes in position (including pressure relief) using approved, safe techniques and equipment. Communicate clearly with Residents, taking into account individual needs and ability, ensuring residents wear/use hearing aids, spectacles and other communication aids appropriately Record and pass on observations, findings and messages appropriately e.g.: weight, food and fluid intake, telephone messages. This may include simple tests such as TPR, urinalysis and BM s where staff have been appropriately trained to do so HOW WE WILL KNOW THAT THESE ARE CARRIED OUT Residents are handled safely Staff are not put at risk Pressure ulcers do not develop within the home and those acquired from outside reduce in size and intensity Residents are able to communicate their needs and feelings appropriately Residents are able to make informed choices about their care Residents are listened to and their needs are met Confidentiality is maintained Records are complete, accurate and legible Changes in Residents condition are acted upon quickly MAIN JOB ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with the orientation, admission and discharge of Residents, handling personal property appropriately Assist in keeping the care environment clean, tidy and hazard free e.g.: Cleaning of equipment and safe disposal of waste Making beds ensuring infected/soiled linen is handled appropriately Assist with the washing and handling of linen and personal laundry when necessary Ensure Residents rooms and communal areas HOW WE WILL KNOW THAT THESE ARE CARRIED OUT Residents property is handled safely and appropriately Resident s settle into the home and feel in control of what is happening to them The home is seen as the Residents home and not just a work place Risks are minimised Staff show appropriate respect for their working environment 3

are kept tidy, clean and clutter free Assist with Resident bathing, dressing, undressing, toileting and personal hygiene paying due attention to : Hair, nails, Teeth/dentures Shaving requirements Personal image and appearance Preferred/prescribed creams and lotions Residents are clean and comfortable and appropriately dressed and groomed Residents continence abilities are maximised Complications are avoided Resident dignity and self respect is maximised Act within the role of a Key Worker to a small number of residents which will involve obtaining a sound knowledge of the Resident s life history and routines, personality, physical health and those factors that influence the way that the Resident would choose to receive their care and support Act as an advocate for the Resident in the case of suspected abuse, ensuring that any concerns are passed on to the Senior Carer/Nurse in Charge immediately Residents will be cared for in a person centred way Relatives will feel able to be involved in the care process Staff will be able to support Resident s at a truly individual level Residents will be protected from possible abuse Residents that have been abused will be offered appropriate support and correct reporting lines will be followed MAIN JOB ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform escort duties as requested to hospital and other professional visits. Chaperone and support visiting doctors and other professionals as requested HOW WE WILL KNOW THAT THESE ARE CARRIED OUT Residents feel supported during potentially stressful visits to and from professionals Visiting professionals are supported to undertake their role within the home Participate in social activities to provide an optimum quality of life for each resident, encouraging relatives, friends and carers to become involved as appropriate Residents and those close to them feel involved in home activities Residents are stimulated and feel able to continue previous hobbies and interests Assist with end of life care of residents as Residents are pain and discomfort free 4

appropriate, supporting relatives, friends and carers and reporting any discomfort or concerns immediately to the person in charge As requested by a supervisor or manager, undertake any other reasonable task which is within your competence. As requested by a supervisor or manager, participate in the home s quality and clinical governance programme, including the audit of care and services delivery. during the end of their life Relatives, friends and carers feel supported during this difficult time The end of a Resident s life is as dignified and comfortable as possible Customer surveys demonstrate Resident satisfaction Use of resources is maintained in a costeffective way. The care service is monitored and checked against defined criteria and standards. Staff and customers are involved in the process. Staff are fully aware of the importance of quality control and maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction at all times. Service problems are reported promptly and action is taken to address issues and maintain care standards. Staff are aware of the requirement for continuous improvement at all times, and demonstrate this approach in their work. Knowledge and Expertise Competence Knowledge and experience in care sector assistant for minimum 6 months. You will need an up to date Police Check PAYMENT STRUCTURE Hourly rate: 6.08 per hour Overtime 7.41 per hour (to be confirmed) What are the basic hours per week? 33-44 hours per week day shift Overtime is paid above 144 hours worked over four weeks (to be confirmed) Shifts: 6 hours (brakes are 15-30min) or 12 hours shift (brakes are 1h 15 min) How will I be paid? Four Seasons will pay you 4 weekly. What will be deducted from my wages? Only National Insurance will be deducted if you meet Student criteria. 5

EQUIPMENT What clothing will they be required to wear? Dark trousers wits, black shoes and tunic (we will need size) Is it provided? Only tunic is provided (free of charge) therefore please make sure you bring with you black or dark blue trousers and black flat laced shoes with closed heels and toes. INDUCTION Who will induct the candidates? Four Seasons on site What language will the induction be in? English When will it be held? Within 3 days of arrival Will the induction time be paid to the candidate? YES What training will be given by client? Moving & Handling, Health & Safety, First Aid, Infection Control, Abuse, Fire Safety & Skills for care etc TRANSPORT Most supply areas have very good local transport services therefore you will be able to use public transport. You will be responsible for the costs (from 2.00 per day) of bus tickets to get to work and back. All homes have bus stops nearby. Please be aware that for SOME locations you will be able to get by walking. Who will pay for my journey to Belfast? You are responsible for the cost of your journey to Belfast. ACCOMMODATION: You can find your own accommodation but in case you need some help with this, Jark Healthcare can assist you to source suitable accommodation in the local area. Please note that usual cost for the room to rent in the area above is from 50.00 per person per week (electricity and gas are usually not included, which are about 5.00 per week) Payment: usually accommodation providers required 4 weeks rents payment and refundable deposit (which is from 2 weeks rent) to be paid on your arrival. Please be aware that some of the accommodation providers accept deposit to be paid in parts, so as soon as you get your salaries. As per information above you will need to make sure you have got money for the accommodation which will need to be paid to the accommodation provider direct on your arrival.
