Welcoming remarks were provided by Board President Mary Hornbuckle, Chancellor John Weispfenning, and OCC President Dennis Harkins. Trustees Lorraine Prinsky, Jim Moreno, and Jerry Patterson also attended. The session was led and organized by Dr. Andreea Serban, Vice Chancellor Educational Services and Technology, Sara Head OCC Adult Education Block Grant (AEBG) Project Director, Dr. Larisa Sergeyeva, GWC AEBG Project Director, Michael Scott, CCC AEBG Project Director, and Steve Curiel, Principal Huntington Beach Adult Education School. Over 80 instructors, staff, administrators, and adult education students from across the District, Huntington Beach Adult Education School, Garden Grove Lincoln Education Center, and local partner organizations participated in the session. Noncredit adult education provides a great opportunity for our district to respond to the community and workforce needs, and to capture new student populations. Coastline Scholarship Ceremony Coastline Community College held its annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Robert B. Moore Theater at Orange Coast College. This year s theme was Your Future Looks Bright, was selected as a optimistic message for scholarship recipients on their educational journey. The event featured bright, lively decorations and glow-in-the-dark giveaways for scholarship recipients. Coastline awarded a total of $281,700 to students to students in the 2017-18 academic year a significant increase of over $40,000 from last year thanks to the continued generosity of the Coastline Foundation s donors. The night was festive and celebratory, as scholarship recipients, their families, and supporters enjoyed an Appreciation Reception that was followed by the Scholarship Ceremony. That evening, a total of 242 scholarship awards were issued to 218 recipients. The night concluded with a special photo opportunity where all the lights were lowered in the auditorium while the scholarship recipients held up their glow sticks, bracelets, and necklaces. Coastline President, Dr. Loretta Adrian extends her thanks to guests and presenters that evening, such as Board of Trustees President Mary Hornbuckle, Vice President, Dr. Lorraine Prinsky, and Trustee David Grant. Also in attendance was Foundation Director, Mariam Khosravani, and Foundation Board member, Camille Howarth; as well as Coastline Vice Presidents, Christine Nguyen and Dr. Kate Mueller. She expresses her gratitude for the many Coastline faculty and staff who were also present that evening for their participation and support.
GWC Scholarship Ceremony Rustler pride was in the air at the annual GWC Scholarships and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. A total of 283 students received 422 scholarships, totaling over $250,000! The annual ceremony recognizes students and donors for their commitment to academic achievement, as well as educational involvement. GWC President, Wes Bryan, welcomed students, donors, and guests at the top of the ceremony, and led students in the annual tradition of taking a selfie with their family and friends in the background. Vice Presidents Dr. Claudia Lee and Dr. Greg Peterson announced each scholarship and recipient, welcoming students to accept their certificates in front of the packed auditorium. A reception followed the ceremony, where students celebrated with family, friends, and donors. For the first time in its history, two students received this year s R. Dudley Boyce Outstanding Student Award: Vanessa Hardin and Javier Venegas. The GWC Student Council established this award in memory of Dr. Boyce, to recognize a student (or students) who best exemplifies the quality of leadership. [Photo credit: Greg Parks] GWC student Ngoc La received six scholarships for her academic achievements, including the prestigious Karr Lowell Scholarship for Chemistry. While attending Golden West, Ngoc has had two internships at Cal Tech and CSU Fullerton. She'll begin her third internship this summer at Stanford University, and in the fall, Ngoc will study at M.I.T. to complete her bachelor s degree. Additional award highlights include GWC student Michelle McGowan, who received three scholarships including the Steve Barnes Scholarship. Arelia Bouronich, GWC student and a member of the National Nurses Student Association and Alpha Gamma Honor Society, received the ENCORE: Students Preparing for 2nd Career Scholarship and the Pete and Helen Shaffer Memorial Scholarship, in addition to others. Mahmoud Awad, a student in GWC's Automotive Technology program, was awarded the Mailing Pros Inc. Scholarship, new to the college this year. The Patrons Chefs for Scholarships fundraising event increased the number of scholarships given to GWC students this year, adding a total of five new awards. Golden West College extends special thanks to all of this year's fantastic donors. Their generous contributions help students achieve their academic goals.
OCC s 70 th Commencement Ceremony Set for May 23 OCC will confer 5,503 associate's degrees and certificates of achievement at the College's 70th commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 23. Several thousand people are expected to attend the program at 5:30 p.m. at the Pacific Amphitheatre (88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa). A total of 1,333 students will receive Associate in Arts degrees, while 1,410 will earn Associate in Science degrees. Certificates of Completion will be presented to 2,760 graduates. English professor, PUENTE program instructor, and fulltime Faculty Member of the Year Donovan Gaytan will deliver a speech titled "Together" at the ceremony. Professor Gaytan has taught at OCC for nearly 30 years and has been a catalyst behind the College's PUENTE program, which offers support to underserved students on campus in order to help them transfer to four-year colleges and universities. As an instructor in the program and an advisor for the PUENTE project, Gaytan has taught and mentored hundreds of students during his years at Coast, many of whom have returned to OCC to serve as mentors in the PUENTE program they were once a part of. Actors Adam Devine and Blake Anderson have been selected as this year's OCC Alumni Hall of Fame recipients and also will give a speech at the ceremony. Devine and Anderson met as students in OCC's theatre program, and later went on to co-found a sketch-comedy group called "Mail Order Comedy" with comedians Anders Holm and Kyle Newachek. The foursome co-created the popular Comedy Central series "Workaholics," which ran for seven seasons before ending last year. Both Devine and Anderson also have appeared in several films and television shows, including Modern Family and Pitch Perfect (Devine) and Arrested Development and Entourage (Anderson). Both actors also teamed with actor and comedian Seth Rogen to write, produce and star in "Game Over, Man!" on Netflix. This year's student speaker is Mayra Bahena, who will give a speech titled "Our Huge Fear, Becomes Our Great Inspiration." OCC will provide a live streaming of the ceremony at www.orangecoastcollege.edu/gradvideo. Tickets are not required to attend the commencement ceremony, and there is no limit to the number of guests graduates may invite to the program. Parking is available through Gate 3 on Fairview Road. Guests who need physical assistance or seating accommodations should arrive at least 45 minutes early to receive assistance from OCC staff members. Strollers are not permitted in the seating areas or aisles of the Amphitheatre. Evenings can be alternately sunny and chilly, so attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately. Sunscreen is recommended.
A current priority for Coast Colleges is implementation of AB 705, which calls for the use of high school performance data for assessment and placement. Citing the predictive validity of such data, this new approach should increase access to and completion of transfer-level English and mathematics courses. It is the intent of AB 705, authored by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, that students be placed directly into transfer-level coursework, and only into remedial coursework when they are deemed highly unlikely to succeed. This is a change that affects enrollment services, counseling, academic instruction, and student support services at each of our colleges. Collaboration among these areas is key to honoring the spirit and letter of the legislation. Moving forward, we will need to plan for increases in transfer-level course offerings, additional support systems that accelerate skills development, and technology improvements that allow automatic self-reporting of high school performance data.
