The Annual Yale Pediatric Update was started nine years ago, in direct response to requests from primary care practitioners throughout the region seeking high quality CME on advances in the field of pediatrics and on topics of practical interest. This year s course has been designed to meet the educational needs of regional pediatric practitioners concerning the latest advances in treatment for a variety of common and potentially serious pediatric health conditions including dermatologic complaints, UTI s, sinusitis, childhood leukemias, reactive attachment disorders, positional plegiocephaly and office cardiology. TARGET AUDIENCE This course has been designed for pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and allied health professionals caring for children. The 9th Annual Yale Pediatric Update features prominent faculty presenting topics that highlight current issues in pediatrics. Each course combines lectures, interactive seminars, and question-and-answer sessions to allow you the opportunity to interact directly with faculty in solving the problems you encounter every day in practice. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to. Recognize and manage common dermatologic complaints Identify frequently missed diagnoses with serious consequences, and learn how to avoid them Learn when to refer children with plegiocephaly for specialty evaluation Develop an evidence-based approach to management of sinusitis Review different presentations of leukemia, along with current treatment protocols and outcomes Update guidelines for treatment and imaging of children with UTIs Practice new PALS resuscitation algorithms Explore common presentations of attachment disorders, and discuss current treatment options Increase awareness of challenges faced by children and adolescents with gender identity issues Recognize and manage common cardiology complaints CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDIT This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The American Academy of Pediatrics is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The AAP designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity is acceptable for a maximum of 7.5 AAP credits. These credits can be applied toward the AAP CME/CPD Award available to Fellows and Candidate Members of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits from organizations accredited by the ACCME. This program is accredited for 7.5 NAPNAP CE contact hours of which 2.5 contain pharmacology (Rx) content per the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners Continuing Education Guidelines. RELICENSURE Beginning October 1, 2007, a physician applying for license renewal must have completed at least 50 contact hours of continuing education during the previous 24 months. It must (1) be in the physician s practice area; (2) reflect the physician s professional needs in order to meet the public s health care needs; and (3) include at least one contact hour of training or education in infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS, HIV), risk management, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
