Page 2 of 7 KBS production team in Canada developing documentaryon the Hearseybrothers, who are buried together in the United Nations Memorial Cemeteryin Busan A production team from KBS Korea is in Canada for the second time now, developing a one-hour documentary about the Hearsey brothers from Ignace, Ontario. Mr. Oh Cheon Myung and Mr. Hwang Ki Kim arrived in Ottawa on May 9 after a 20 hour flight from Incheon, with changes in Vancouver. They spent the next day interviewing Senator Yonah Martin while she worked in the Canadian Senate. Senator Martin s executive assistant, Grace Seear arranged for the team to tape footage inside the Senate Chambers, a privilege requiring much administrative planning. Mr. Oh had been in Canada previously interviewing Debbie Hearsey, the daughter of the late Archie Hearsey. He accompanied her and a revisit group of 77 veterans and family members as her father s ashes were conveyed to Korea. En route he taped a national ceremony arranged and conducted at the Vancouver International Airport by Senator Martin, then the arrival ceremony in Incheon. Upon arrival in Incheon, the ceremony was one of national stature with Korea s Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs officially receiving the ashes of Archie Hearsey into the nation. It was Archie Hearsey s wish that he be buried beside his older brother, Joseph Hearsey, who had been killed in action on October 13, 1951. Archie had gone to Korea earlier and served in the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia s Canadian Light Infantry in the Battle of Kapyong. He did not meet his older brother Joseph in Korea until October 13, the same night that Joseph Hearsey was mortally wounded. In Korea the story gripped the hearts of the nation. People read news articles avidly,

Senator Martin shows the KBS team the Senate Chambers where she attends every session and often speaks in tribute to Canada's Korean War Veterans.Beginning

Grace Seear also arranged for the KBS team to meet with and interview Commodore Hans W. Jung, surgeon general of the Canadian Forces. Most veterans, and in fact, most serving members in the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air force are unaware that their most senior medical officer is a Canadian of Korean lineage. Mr. Oh was extremely interested in interviewing Commodore Jung to obtain his views on treatment of post traumatic stress disorder and to ask his opinion on how this disease may have impacted servicemen who were on active duty in the Korean War theatre. Commodore Jung is a career officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, having enlisted in 1981. He completed his medical training at the University of Toronto and the Toronto East General and Orthopedic Hospital in 1985. Commodore Jung was promoted to his current rank in June 2009 and appointed Surgeon General, Commander of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group and Queen's Honorary Physician.
Page 5 of 7 The team left Toronto that same night by car to travel more than 400 miles to another location to interview veterans. They will travel on by air to Thunder Bay, Ignace and Sioulx Lookout in Ontario to interview family and friends of the Hearsey brothers. After three days in northwestern Ontario they will fly back to Ottawa and interview Dr. Andrew Burtch, historian at the Canadian War Museum and General (Ret d)ramsey Withers, who has kindly agreed to personally show them the museum s Korean War era memorabilia. General Withers served in Korea as a young lieutenant attached to the Royal 22e Regiment. He went to Korea right after graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada, in June, 1952.
Page 6 of 7 A welcome break in a hectic day of interviews and taping came in the early afternoon, when Mr. Kim (left), and Mr. Oh sat down to lunch in the Parliamentary restaurant with Senator Martin and Gloria Kim, assistant and intern (right, rear) and Grace Seear, Senator Martin s executive assistant. Counting time on the road that night the KBS team put in a 17 hour day. Actually, it s their typical schedule. Senator Martin seen below with them at table was interviewed in the Korean language, as the Korean language documentary will air in Korea in June and be seen by millions of viewers.
