It also participated in the larger Michigan Home Economics Association, and often attended Association events around the state. Other club activities included social events and lectures. The Home Economics Club records contain items from the Home Economics Club at Michigan State Normal School and Eastern Michigan University. Items included in this collection are invitations, newsletters, photographs, Treasurer's reports, silver serving pieces, and newspaper clippings. The Home Economics Club records are divided into three series, Administration and Activities, Clippings, and Members and Alumna. Administrative History The purpose of the Home Economics Club at Michigan State Normal College, founded in 1926 was "to always be at the service of their friends, club, department, home, and community. Their aim was to strive onward and upward toward the higher ideals of culture and higher standards of living through their influence upon the lives and the homes of other people," (taken from a Home Economics Club brochure, found in the "Administration and Activities" series of this collection. The Home Economics Club had many social activities during the school year, including dinners, dances, and lectures on good housekeeping. Scope and Contents The Home Economics Club records contain items from the Home Economics Club at Michigan State Normal School and Eastern Michigan University. Items included in this collection are invitations, newsletters, photographs, Treasurer's reports, silver serving pieces, and newspaper clippings. The Home Economics Club records are divided into three series, Administration and Activities, Clippings, and Members and Alumna. All materials have been arranged chronologically and are dated from 1926 through 198. The Administration and Activities series includes event materials, programs, the Michigan Home Economics newsletters, and two subseries : Treasurer's Notebooks, which include bound administration notes maintained by the respective treasurer's (meeting dates, attendance, and minutes, dues, membership lists), and Silver setting pieces, which is composed of three record center cartons containing 16 silver pieces, many of which were presented to the club by membership classes and have been engraved. The Clippings series includes newspaper clippings from 190 to 1974. Some of these clippings had been previously scrapbooked by the club, and have since been separated and are foldered chronologically. The Members and Alumna series includes marriage and birth announcements, as well as correspondence from former members. Some of the announcements include relevant clippings and/or photographs that were included in the correspondence. It also includes two files of black and white photographs, many of which have dates and names written on the back. These photograph files include official club member class photographs. - Page 4 -
