Gina Wang (Clarinet Section Leader & Homecoming Queen) Class of 2016 NEW TUBA DONATIONS Now in its 16 th year, our program has some aging instruments. Like last year s trombone fundraising drive (and the euphonium, tenor sax, bass clarinet and Sousaphone ones in prior years - THANKS for making those become a reality!) we are kicking-off a drive to purchase a new St. Petersburg 202N silver concert tuba at a cost of $4,200.00. We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the following donors thus far! Please help us make this a reality! Dr. Sam R. Andress (Program Founder & Director) Natalie Cobo (Clarinet) Class of 2020 Nicole Cromwell (Tenor Sax) Class of 2019 Danielle Galvin (Tenor Sax) Class of 2021 Tony Gutierrez (Tenor Sax) Class of 2020 Cole Maggard (Clarinet) Class of 2018 Joshua Nelson (Trombone/Tuba) Class of 2018 The Nelson Family (Joshua Nelson Trombone Class of 2018) Elisa Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2021 Emma Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2018 Ariana Trinh (Clarinet) Class of 2019 REGIMENT CAMP LETTER The following letter was emailed to each of our Regiment members on July 4, 2018: Dear Regiment Member: Wednesday, July 4, 2018 We are thrilled that you have made the choice to join us as a member of the 2018 Los Osos Regiment! Another exciting season of marching band is just around the corner! This letter contains a great deal of important information so please take the time to read it carefully. If for some reason you have decided to not continue with the Regiment, we respectfully ask that you email us right away at samuel.andress@cjuhsd.net so that we can take you off the roster prior to our camp. Please do this ASAP!

This year s Regiment camp dates and Schedule of Events will be posted on the Weekly page of www.losososbands.org There are some days set aside specifically for our new Rookie members, percussion and color guard, and some for the full Regiment. Please pay careful attention to the dates! The new Schedule of Events will appear in the upcoming edition of the Weekly (to be posted this Sunday the 8 th ). We are just making minor edits to it currently. Our camp schedule is as follows (this is also on the Weekly page of our program website): SUNDAY, JULY 29, 2018: Noon 2:00pm Student Staff Leadership Training. 2:00 Regiment Kick-off Camp for Regiment Rookies, Student Staff, All Percussion & All Color Guard 7:00 Rookie Parent/Guardians Mandatory Meeting with Dr. A MONDAY, JULY 30 FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2018: 8:00am Band Camp for all Regiment members (lunch break happens from 11:00am 12noon) FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2018: 7:00pm Mandatory Regiment Parent Meeting Regiment Preview Performance! MONDAY AUGUST 6 TUESDAY AUGUST 7, 2018: Marching Band Uniform Fittings (specific times outlined below) Students who are missing (unexcused) from ANY portion of the Regiment camp will removed from our organization. Class schedule issues at the front office need to be settled either by parent/guardians or by the students during the lunch break from camp. We understand that certain times may be randomly assigned for seniors to take their individual senior pictures. If your assigned time happens to conflict with the band camp schedule, please call the phone number located on that mailing and reschedule the picture time. We have a large class of seniors this year, and will be unable to fully maximize our band camp time if many people are consistently coming and going. These times can be easily rescheduled and no one should be missing from band camp rehearsals due to senior pictures. Thank you for your understanding that in order for us to be successful we must have all students at camp, every day.

Please eat a healthy meal before coming to camp each day. For lunch, students have the option of bringing a sack lunch with them to camp, having their parent/guardians drop-off a lunch, or leaving campus for lunch. Lunch is on your own. Essentially, camp shuts down for that one hour each day. The lunch break will be from 11:00am 12noon. Attire for all members of the Regiment during camp will be Rally t-shirts or PLAIN white t-shirts (no logos or writing on them, etc.) and LOHS PE shorts or NAVY BLUE workout-type athletic shorts. Students will wear the white marching band shoes ( Dinkles ) or tennis shoes for those who do not yet have their marching shoes. Please remember hats, sunblock, sunglasses, and a big bottle of water. Students dressed inappropriately will be sent home. On the evening of Friday, August 3 rd (the last day of camp) we will have a mandatory parent meeting at the Cafeteria at. All students must have at least one parent/guardian in attendance for the meeting. Following that meeting we will move to the football stadium for a preview performance of what has been learned during the week. Our field show music is now finished being written and is being edited by our staff at this point. IT IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!! We will email a link to download the edited parts as soon as they are complete. Please be monitoring your email! When the show music is done being edited and is emailed out shortly, brass, woodwind and percussion students, please download and print your show music and put it into your (black) 3-ring folder prior to camp. All students will also download the audio file their phones/ipods, etc. Listen to it often, and familiarize yourself with the show! As a reminder, attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances. Our performance Schedule of Events will be posted on the Weekly page of our website at www.losososbands.org as of Sunday, July 8 th. We ask you to familiarize yourself with the website and make a habit of checking there regularly for updates. It truly is our primary means by which to communicate important information. Because the Regiment has some Saturday events, including the tournaments that will help to qualify us for SCSBOA Championships, it is imperative that we do not have members of our team missing from our rehearsals and performances. Accordingly, those students who need to take the SAT test during the fall semester are advised to schedule their tests around the band and color guard schedule. We have clearly identified on the Weekly page of the website which SAT and ACT test dates are best to avoid conflicts. This will prevent us from having anyone missing from our events, and will in return help us to be successful. All Regiment students are required to have a BLACK 3-ring binder, clearly marked with their first and last name. These binders are to be brought starting on the first day of the camp. The binder should also have a string attached to it so that the student can wear the binder across their shoulder while marching. Brass, woodwind and percussion students should have their music from the May camp neatly filed in sheet protectors, in alphabetical order, inside of these folders. Additional music will be distributed at the upcoming camp. Have some empty sheet protectors in your binders, ready to go! As the Regiment camp approaches, it is important to start spending some time on your instrument or with your flag/sabre/rifle in terms of getting the cobwebs out and getting the basics back under your fingers. We realize that it s summer vacation so please understand that we are not asking for you to block out multiple hours of your day. Rather, we are just asking for periodic work on your given instrument, so that we can go into the Regiment camp experience as strong as possible. The stronger the individual players, the stronger the band and guard will be as a whole. Many sections of the band and guard have already scheduled informal music sectionals and get-togethers either at the school or at various peoples

houses. These events are often followed by pizza or pool parties with other members of the band and guard, and we find that these are a great way to get to know the other folks in the organization. In turn, we will all learn to work well together. We encourage you to consider organizing or hosting this type of event as our Regiment camp approaches. Working on the basics and fundamentals prior to camp is what we are asking for. BAND UNIFORM INFORMATION (for Brass, Woodwind & Percussionists Only): Each band student is responsible for the care of their assigned uniform, including dry cleaning and alterations. The uniform remains the sole property of the Los Osos HS, and will remain in the Band Hall for the duration of the marching season. It will not be kept at the student s home at any time. UNIFORM FITTINGS: We have set aside specific days and times for the task of fitting our marching band uniforms on our returning and rookie band members. It is VERY IMPORTANT that students attend their assigned day and time for fittings. MONDAY, August 6, 2018: 8:00am Band Uniform Fittings for all RETURNING MEMBERS. All hemming must be completed prior to dry cleaning and pressing. If any material is cut, the student will be held responsible for the replacement costs of the uniform. These uniforms will be reused by other students for years to come. If uniforms are damaged in any way, any and all costs required to repair or replace the uniform will be the student s responsibility. Please deliver uniform to Vineyard Marketplace Cleaners for dry cleaning and alterations no later than Friday, August 10, 2018. Please do not take the uniform to any other location for cleaning or alterations. We have had a wonderful working relationship with Vineyard Marketplace Cleaners for the last several years, and they will deliver the uniforms directly to Osos after they are cleaned/altered. Please note that once the uniforms are returned to Los Osos, they will be inspected, as well as repaired regularly throughout marching season. Please notify Leslie Arevalo, as soon as possible, if your student has any problems with their uniform, so that those issues may be resolved prior to the next performance. A name tag will be placed on both the jacket and the overall pants during uniform fittings. Please do not remove the name tags. The labels help us keep track of the uniforms, and who they are assigned to, when Vineyard Marketplace delivers the back to Los Osos. Please address all band uniform-related questions to: Leslie Arevalo, Uniform Coordinator: lcarreon80@yahoo.com We are looking forward to another fabulous season of music and marching as the 2018 edition of the Los Osos Regiment begins to take shape! You are part of a very proud marching band tradition that continues this fall, with YOU as a valued member! ONWARD!

GO OSOS! Dr. Sam R. Andress Program Founder & Director Los Osos Band, Orchestra & Color Guard ROBIN LEWIS-DiMARIO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS This scholarship is an award given to a senior in the Los Osos Band, Orchestra & Color Guard who is college bound, demonstrates a strong work ethic and leadership skills, has a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and is community-minded. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist a deserving senior with the expenses of college, such as text books, tuition, school supplies, etc... It will be an annual award at the Awards Night in remembrance of Robin Lewis-DiMario who was a Booster Club Executive Board Member, Chaperone Coordinator, and parent of Angelo DiMario who was a member of the program from 2008-2012. She was a woman of integrity, strong moral character, and a strong supporter of the band program. Through her passing, her family would like to help students achieve their goals in college, so that they may contribute to their community in a positive way. $250.00 in starter funds were donated by the DiMario family in Robin s name. The first scholarship was awarded in 2015 and has since that time been awarded annually. We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the following 2018-2019 donors thus far! The Chase Family Elisa Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2021 Emma Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2018 MONDAY, JULY 9, 2018 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AMBASSSADORS OF MUSIC REHEARAL: Today at the Band Hall from 10:00am 5:00pm. Lunch will be available for purchase, or bring a sack lunch. To be eligible to travel with our group, full participation in all rehearsals and in the Bon Voyage Concert are mandatory. Please understand that we have very limited rehearsal time to get our ensembles ready for the European performances. Commitment is key to our success! It is very important that you have prepared all of the music by the time you arrive for the first day of rehearsal. The rehearsal time is very limited. People in Europe each year look forward to hearing the Ambassadors of Music from Southern California. PLEASE PRACTICE! If you are a reed player, be sure to bring plenty of good reeds. Double reed players, if you bring a reed knife, be sure it s in your checked suitcase (NOT your carry-on) when we get to the airport. Knives can cause a huge problem at the TSA checkpoint!

Remember that above all, this is a MUSIC trip, and music is the whole point. Before you arrive for the rehearsals, you should verify that your band/orchestra instrument is in EXCELLENT working condition. If you need to replace a pad or cork or have a dent removed or replace some strings or a bridge, do this in plenty of time before the trip. If you are using a school-owned musical instrument, please be sure to communicate with your own band or orchestra director regarding the proper procedure for instrument repairs. Some schools require that the repairs be done in specific shops or music stores. Be sure to give your director plenty of time to help get instruments fixed prior to our rehearsals and trip. There will be NO place to purchase things like reeds, valve oil, etc. on this trip, so please plan accordingly and bring enough of what you need to be musically successful. Traveling around Europe on a music performance trip with a broken instrument would be entirely unacceptable. Please plan ahead! MUSIC FOLDERS & WIRE MUSIC STANDS (REQUIRED FOR ALL BAND & ORCHESTRA STUDENTS): Your sheet music needs to be in a 1 (or bigger) BLACK 3-ring binder with clear sheet protectors. Loose paper or unbound pages or 3-hole punched pages are not acceptable. Remember that our band concerts are outside, held in bandshells or gazebos, sometimes in breezy conditions. Additionally, we are using wire music stands and the folders will be visible to the audience; BLACK 3-ring binders, are required. We will provide the performance order of the music during our July rehearsals and you can put your music in that order for easy logistics! Do not forget your wire music stand! Wire music stands are REQUIRED of all band and orchestra students. Foldable, wire music stands are available at your local music store or online. We prefer that you have the black ones, but silver will also be fine. The nicer ones come with a nylon storage pouch and a shoulder strap, which makes it handy to carry them from the hotel room to the concert site, along with your instrument and music. HAVING A MUSIC STAND IS VERY IMPORTANT. Our concert venues do not provide stands, so please prepare for this. Plan to pack the stand in your suitcase for transport to Europe. TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2018 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AMBASSSADORS OF MUSIC REHEARAL: Today at the Band Hall from 10:00am 5:00pm. Lunch will be available for purchase, or bring a sack lunch. BON VOYAGE CONCERT: 7:00pm in the Los Osos Theatre. FREE ADMISSION! This is a great time for your family and friends to hear the ensembles and to take some good pictures. We will wear the red performance polo shirts and black pants/shoes for this performance. WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2018

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AMBASSSADORS OF MUSIC REHEARAL: 10:00am 3:00pm sectionals & full rehearsal, 2:30pm final meeting for participants & parent/guardians. Lunch will be available for purchase, or bring a sack lunch. THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2018 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AMBASSADORS OF MUSIC DEPART FOR EUROPE! Please re-read the important information that was sent to all participants recently from Dr. Andress and from the Voyageurs office in Colorado. Remember your PASSPORT and remember to be at LAX 3 hours prior to your departure time, to check-in with our group. We cannot move through security until each and every member of our flight group is present. Be on-time (early) for your call time! FRIDAY, JULY 13 SATURDAY, JULY 28, 2018 WHO: Happy Summer! REGIMENT SUMMER SECTIONALS As the Regiment camp approaches, it is important to start spending some time on your instrument or with your flag/sabre/rifle in terms of getting the cobwebs out and getting the basics back under your fingers. We want for our students to be well-rounded individuals! Rest, relax, and recharge your batteries this weekend! Spend time with family, friends and pets! SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 2018 Happy Sunday! Spend time with family, friends and pets! Los Osos Band, Orchestra & Color Guard Schedule of Events: UPDATES are listed in bold type!

Please do not prioritize this list! All events listed here carry equal weight and importance in our minds and for our program. A parade performance is as important as a football game, as a booster club meeting, as a concert festival, as a jazz band event at the junior high school, as field show championships. If it s on this list, it s required, and it s important. Please know this! In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Regiment (band and guard) students also participate in weekly marching band rehearsal every Tuesday evening from 5:15- in the football stadium, beginning on the first week of school through until winter break. In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsal and the events listed below, all band and color guard students also participate in a weekly master class rehearsal every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm at the band hall and quad area, beginning the first week of school through until the last week of school. Advanced-planning and accountability are very crucial to the success of our program!

GO OSOS!
