Directory of artistic and cultural businesses Directory or professional and recreational organizations and businesses active in arts and culture. Sherbrooke Sherbrooke, A City of Culture REGISTRATION FORM Arlette Vittecoq, 2002

Displaying culture Sherbrooke, City of culture is more than just a slogan. It s a reality that deserves to be promoted, not only to foster its recognition but also its development. In this context, and as an element of the City s cultural policy, an important first step was achieved in this area in 2004 with the creation of an online Directory of artists and artisans of art that now includes some 700 names. The success of this project, initiated by the City for the benefit of its artistic community, now gives rise to promising further actions in terms of networking possibilities for cultural organizations and businesses and help in promoting their services and activities. We therefore invite all cultural businesses that meet the eligibility criteria to register for this electronic directory dedicated to their development free of charge. The more that register, the more useful this directory (which will be updated regularly) will be. The cultural sector will be sure to profit over the short, medium and long term. This goal will only be achieved if enough eligible businesses are willing to complete the form and return it by mail or online. 1R e g i s t r a t i o n F o r m In short, appearing in the City of Sherbrooke s Directory of cultural and artistic businesses means contributing to a visibility campaign whose success rests on an all for one, one for all approach. Thank you in advance for joining in this effort to showcase on the Internet and thus worldwide Sherbrooke s many cultural services and know-how. Mayor, Jean Perrault Chair of the Comité de la culture, Chantal L Espérance

Directory To follow-up on the orientations of its cultural policy (2003), the City of Sherbrooke is establishing an electronic directory of cultural businesses on its territory. This directory will complete the work, undertaken in 2004, of creating an online directory of artists and artisans of art (http://ville.sherbrooke.qc.ca/repertoire/). The directory has two goals: on the one hand, to offer cultural and artistic organizations in Sherbrooke a networking and promotional tool and a means of ensuring better visibility for their work; on the other hand, to provide an opportunity for the City to gain a better understanding of the wealth and variety of activities offered and services available in Sherbrooke s arts and cultural field. The City s objective in creating this directory is to gather together the cultural businesses and organizations that are professional or recreational, for profit or not-for-profit, as well as public and parapublic institutions that work in the area of culture. 2R e g i s t r a t i o n F o r m

Eligibility Any business or organization, operating in Sherbrooke for at least one year and actively working in the field of arts and culture, is invited to appear in the Directory. The City of Sherbrooke defines a business or organization as a legally constituted entity whose primary mission is to work in one or more cultural or artistic areas: creation, production, dissemination, training or conservation. In general, the eligible fields of arts and culture are: books and literature; visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, etc.); performing arts (music, dance, theatre, storytelling, etc.); architecture and design; multidisciplinary arts; circus and street performing; media and digital arts (cinema, video, computer graphics, etc.); arts and crafts (cabinetry, jewellery, embroidery, etc.); culture and scientific recreation (astronomy, bird-watching, mineralogy, etc.); heritage and museology. Cultural functions are defined as: 3R e g i s t r a t i o n F o r m Creation: designing original works, one-of-a-kind or in limited series, attributable to one or more individuals. Production: process of transforming a work from its original concept into a final product or performance. Dissemination: a collection of means to promote and make publicly accessible various artistic works or cultural property. Training: offering activities (courses, workshops) with a view to the acquisition of knowledge or know-how in an artistic or cultural field. Conservation: action taken to preserve and highlight cultural property. Categories: Professional: business or organization that relies mainly on paid staff with recognized skills to carry out its activities. An association or group of artists or artisans the majority of whom are professionals.
