Updated June 2011 and April 2014 Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Post Secondary Scholarship Foundation The Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Post Secondary Scholarship is applicable to students whose parents or legal guardians or the students themselves are members of the Rumsey Ag Society and as well is directed to the following objectives: 1. To grant scholarship to deserving youth to assist them in their pursuit of further education at the post secondary level: 2. To encourage youth within the community to pursue further education 3. To reward academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement in school activities: 4. To acknowledge community involvement and volunteer work 5. To recognize involvement in the 4-H program.
Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Post Secondary Scholarship Annual Award One scholarship in the approximate amount of one thousand dollars ($1000) will be awarded annually to the applicant (Grade 12 student) attaining the highest composite score on the criteria for eligibility. (The scholarship will vary with interest rates.) Note: Students are encouraged to have some of these criteria in place before June 30 of the application year since the principal will have to verify their information. Eligibility Criteria for Application 1. Applicants must be a graduate of the current school year or the previous school year (no more than one (1) year out of school) and the parent or legal guardian of the applicant or the applicant themselves must be a member of the Rumsey and District Agricultural Society. 2. Applicants must meet post secondary admission requirements at an accredited post secondary educational institution. The successful applicant must complete one full year to receive the full scholarship and one full year to receive the full scholarship and one full semester to receive 50% of the scholarship. 3. Applicants will accumulate up to a maximum of one hundred fifteen(115) points toward the award with the student earning the most points being the recipient of the award. Points earned for 4-H involvement, extracurricular involvement and community volunteer work will be restricted will be restricted to the grade 10, 11 and 12 years of schooling, excluding section 3.5, and will be accumulated in the following areas and in the manner indicated: 3.1 Academic Achievement - To a Maximum of 50 Points Applicants will be awarded points based on their overall average in of English 30 or 30-2, three (3) other thirty (30) level 5 credit advanced diploma courses, and one (1) other thirty (30) level 5 course. Overall Average Points 95% - 100% 50 90% - 94% 45 85% - 89% 40 80% - 84% 35 75% - 79% 30 70% - 74% 25
3.2 Extracurricular Activities To a Maximum of 28 Points Applicants will be awarded points based on the number of years of direct and meaningful involvement in the following extracurricular school and community activities: Activity Points A) Student Government Involvement 1 Year 3 2 Years 5 3 Years 7 B) School Sports Involvement 1 Year 3 2 Years 5 3 Years 7 C) Cultural/Fine Arts Pursuits Involvement School or Community (e.g. drama, music, dance, art) 1 Year 3 2 Years 5 3 Years 7 D) Involvement in Organized Sports Outside of School 1 Year 3 2 Years 5 3 Years 7
3.3 Citizenship To a Maximum of 16 Points Applicants will be awarded points on the basis of the number, type and level of involvement in the community related activities. 3.5 Applicant will be awarded 6 points for activities they were involved in before high school. (e.g. swimming, garden club, 4-H, junior curling) Application Procedures: Applicants should make application the Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Scholarship Committee by August 20th and along with their application should submit: 1. An official transcript of marks from Alberta Education; 2. An official statement of confirmation of registration from an accredited post secondary education institution; 3. A signed statement confirmed by the principal of the school outlining extracurricular activity involvement; 4. A copy of the appropriate 4-H Diary Record(s) bearing the signature of the Club leader. Scholarship Selection Committee: The Selection Committee will consist of 3 directors of the current Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Board of Directors. The Selection Committee will be designated at the general meeting in December. Any director that has a relative applying for the scholarship is not eligible to be part of the selection committee. Another director will be placed on the selection committee.
In the case of a tie between applicants, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest average in grade 12. Procedures: 1. Confirmation of receipt of application will be made through the Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Scholarship Committee within one week of the closing application date, August 20 th. 2. The Selection Committee will meet by the October Board meeting to Review the applications. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application after the October Board meeting. 3. 50% of the Scholarship awarded funds will be presented to the successful Applicant at the Annual Fall Supper in November. A letter must confirm the applicant s registration and attendance at an accredited post secondary educational institution. The remaining 50% of the awarded funds will be issued by February 1 st of the following year when attendance at the institution is confirmed. 4. In the event the successful applicant fails to meet or live up to the eligibility criteria, the next standing applicant will become eligible. 5. Applicants are asked to advise the Rumsey and District Agricultural Society Scholarship Committee of any revisions to their application, which could affect the receipt of the award. 6.
