Describe strategies to overcome these limitations Session 2: Ethical Dilemmas: Strategies to Assist Surrogate Decision Makers with Tough End-of-Life Decisions Donna Foliart, MD, MPH Medical Director Palliative Care John Muir Medical Center Walnut Creek, CA Making decisions regarding end-of-life medical care for a loved one who no longer has decision-making capacity is extremely difficult. Surrogate decision makers may have limited understanding of the medical issues and are uncertain as to the extent of their loved one s illness and prognosis. The result is that family members may insist upon care that the medical team feels is futile. Dr. Foliart will discuss ethical dilemmas at end-of-life, explore reasons behind demands for care that has more burden than benefit, and review ways to assist families in making medical decisions. Four cases highlighting these issues will be discussed. 1. Discuss ethical dilemmas at end-of-life 2. Explore why surrogates may want futile care 3.
