Representing the District Lodge was Lt. Governor Zachary Prineas and District Housing Co-Chairman Peter Triantafyllos. Members from both chapters enjoyed the camaraderie of the dinner and presentation, which included District benefits and programs. The Ventura chapter discussed their chapter scholarship, and the Santa Barbara chapter announced their church golf tournament on May 3, 2004 at the Rancho San Marcos golf course. Golf Chairman Jimmy Christos has been working hard to organize a great golf tournament at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. Presidents and Convention Chairmen Steven Tripodes and Georgina Hayes have been meeting with the convention committee to help ensure that our upcom- ing District Convention is first rate. The convention committee includes Vice Presidents Jim Bornino and Bess Bornino, Secretaries Peter Triantafyllos, Nick Gritsonis, Valerie Lakon, Treasurers Nick Demos, Nick Nicolaidis, Vera Messerotes, Past District Governors Gregory Karaptis and Anthony Horaites, Past Chapter Presidents John Buzas, Nick Tripodes, and Victoria Randall, District Treasurer Greg Mallis, and members John Kopatsis, Jimmy Christos, Charlie Christodulelis, and John Triantafyllos. The committee has visited the Pasadena Hilton several times, and is confident that the facilities will provide an excellent convention experience. Thanks to all the members in both the AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope, we know that our events and activities will be a great experience for all. On Tuesday, May 4, the Pasadena AHEPA family initiated Nicholas Politis and Harry Scolinos. Nicholas is Vice President of St. Anthony s Parish Council. Harry is our U.S. Congressional candidate for the 29th District (see scolinos4congress.com for more information), and he has also been a long time supporter of our AHEPA Tournament of Roses Float project. Of course, George Dussias was also in short 5 or so years of its existence. It has chapters in Thessaloniki, Glyfada, Cyprus, and they are planning for one in Chania, Crete. This year's convention is going to be held on the beautiful island of Zakynthos, on June 18-20. It's great being an AHEPAN, isn't it?

The guests of honor were PDG Gus and Kay Alex, who have done so much for St. Katherine s Community in the South Bay. The picture on the right was taken on March 12, 2004, commemorating the LAUNCH program at Arnold Elementary School in Torrance for children with learning disabilities. Our Chapter donated $500.00 at Christmas time to the school so they can buy new play equipment. To the left of the children are Frances Economides - Corresponding Secretary, and Anne Eliopulos, PDG. To the right of the children is Chapter President Mary Peters. The children (not just from this class, but from all the other classes) wrote us thank you notes that were very touching. All the teachers involved in the program and the principal also wrote and shared their appreciation for our group s help, and for just thinking of them. AHEPA DISTRICT 20 Dean Tripodes District 20 Governor Post Office Box 486 Sierra Madre, CA 91025 Presorted Standard U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. 400 Laguna Beach, CA Change Service Requested GREEK OLYMPIC BASEBALL TEAM Mike Riskas, member of Rose Bowl Chapter #373, is the assistant manager of the Greek Olympic baseball team. It's an interesting time -- the U.S. won't have a team in the Olympics, but the Greeks will, and they just might be good enough to win a medal. Greece, as host country for the Olympics, gets an automatic berth in every sport they choose. Taking advantage of a little-known rule in the Olympic constitution, they are stocking their baseball roster with the American and Canadian children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of Greek emigrants. Among those on the current roster are former big leaguers Eric Pappas and Clint Zavaras, plus World Series veteran Clay Bellinger and top prospects Pete Sikaris and Aaron Miles (who is good enough that he may have to pass up the Olympics if he's in the majors with the Rockies). The uniforms may read "Hellas" but the labels ought to read "Made in America." The Greek tryouts were held last November, though manager Rob Derksen is still looking for players to add to the roster. The players will play with their regular organizations this season and those who aren't on a 25-man major-league roster in August will play a couple of exhibition games in Toronto and Baltimore. Then they'll fly to Athens and try to win a medal for Greece. With the U.S. and Korea out, they just might. GREEK OLYMPIC DISCUS TEAM After struggling for 3 years to work and train and then a 2 year absence from the sport of track & field, Alex Ghanotakis of Arlington, MA is back in a big way. With a new personal best of 62 meters, the 6 5, 275 lb., 2003 Greek National Discus Champion hit the Olympic Qualifying Standard which will earn him the chance to represent Greece in next summer s games in Athens. Alex had a very successful college career. He earned All-American honors, won several Ivy League Titles, and was named Team Captain his senior year. Upon graduating from Dartmouth College in 1997, Alex moved to California to pursue his athletic goals and realize his dream of making an Olympic team. Training was his priority, but the costs of life Alex Ghanotakis member of the Greek National Discus Team and college loans required him to start working at Oracle Corporation selling software. Finally in April 2002, Alex realized that he had a brief opportunity to compete at an elite level and experience the Olympics. Now Alex spends 7 months out of the year in Tucson, AZ where he is a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and AHEPA Chapter #275. As a member of the Greek National Team, Panellinios Athletic Club, Alex spends 5 months of the year in Athens where he trains and competes. Arizona Chapter #275 has a fund to help Alex Ghanotakis.
