We are grateful to all the volunteers who gave of themselves to help during the week. We are grateful to the Carnival Committee for their dedication and hard work through out the year. Without them the Carnival is not possible. Loving Hearts, Faithful Friends What really gives value to anything is its usefulness in serving others. Our body draws its value from its usefulness in serving others, and our life draws its value, not from the money we make, or the prizes we win, or the power we wield over others, but from the service we give every day to add a little bit more to the happiness of our family and our community. - E. Easwaran We are especially grateful for the able leadership of Fred Durante, our Carnival Chairperson, whose hard work and dedication is very much appreciated! Kudos to all! EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS ARE NEEDED stcatherineofsienacarnival StCatherineofSienaCarnival Eucharistic Ministers are urgently needed at this time. The more volunteers we have, the easier the schedule is. What does an Altar Server do? The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy and to be an example to the congregation by actively participating in the liturgy. Servers carry the cross and the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the alter, carry the incense and censor, help during the preparation of the gifts, wash the priest s hands, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. We are always in need of more altar servers. As long as a child has received their first communion, they can be trained to serve. If you or your family members are interested in joining this beautiful ministry of altar serving at St. Catherine s, please email our altar server coordinator, Connie Murljacic, at cmurljac@gmail.com or Deacon Renato Berzolla at lux1@aol.com. 2017-18 Registration Walking with Purpose is a Catholic women s Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal study and small group discussion that link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church. The Walking with Purpose parish program at St. Catherine of Siena is introducing a new 22-week session for 2017-18. Two courses will be offered. Opening Your Heart, the foundational course, is designed for women who are new to WWP. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! Discovering Our Dignity will also be offered, a study of women in the bible, which will draw us into a deeper relationship with Jesus and show how much Christ loves us. We will meet Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. beginning October 5 through April with breaks for holidays & school vacations. Free childcare is available! For more information and to register, please visit the parish website stcath.org and find Walking with Purpose under the Faith Formation tab. For questions please contact wwpstcathct@gmail.com. . What s Happening in Faith Formation Grades 1 12 Visit www.stcath.org for the full class calendar. The Religious Education Office hours are Monday Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A CATECHIST! Jesus called people to action. Jesus asked people to commit, to decide and "Come follow me." Teach the Lord s Word to our children. We will stand with you and help you. Catechists are needed in all grades 1-8. Please think and pray about sharing your faith with our children and teach religious education to grades 1-8 for the upcoming year 2017-2018. Please call 203637-3661 x330 or email j.pataky@stcath.org. BECOME A MORE PRESENT PARENT The moments we have with our children are precious and fleeting, yet parents find it necessary to multitask to meet all our responsibilities. Tasks get done but our relationships with our children suffer. Instead, try these tips to be more present to children. "A sower went out to sow... Gospel Reflection Mt 13: 1-23 The parable of the sower is one of Jesus' best-known stories. It is filled with word-pictures that can take root in our memories. We can see the sower, or the farmer, tossing handfuls of seed left and right. And when Jesus describes the four different kinds of soil that the seed falls on, we can compare ourselves to one of those categories. How sad it is that so much of the seed does not bear fruit. Yet the word of God does not return to God empty. There will always be enough people of "good soil" to see and hear and do the work of God. The reign of God will come! Turn off electronics. Electronics have become indispensible tools to stay efficient but can distract us from our families. One of the first ways to be a present parent is to turn off laptops, tablets, phones, and other distractions during family time. Don t just put it down put it away. Set aside specific time. If your family works best with a routine, consider putting Mom and Me - Dad and Me dates on the calendar. Scheduling it makes it more likely to happen. The amount of time we spend together isn t as critical as the quality of that time. Teach children the art of conversation. It s easier to tune out when someone is talking. Instead, ask open-ended questions that require thoughtful responses. Encourage an exchange so children are engaged and interested. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Summer Vacation? Don t leave home without Him! Question of the Week: How does faith influence what you see and hear? Family Discussion Questions for the Gospel Do you know any "good soil" people? Describe one or two whom you know. What kind of soil do you think you are? Will you be ready today to let the word of God grow in your heart? If you have thoughts or questions about todays Gospel, any questions about your faith, or simply to let me know you re reading these discussions, please feel free to email me at deacon.howe@stcath.org. I d love to hear from you.
