The instructors were very knowledgeable and were very experienced in the subject. Their knowledge on wildland fires helped them to show us a new insight on effective methods of putting out wildland fires. They also helped by explaining and breaking down each situation. The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department participated in the Light and Fight program. Our group of 12 received top notch instruction from highly qualified motivated instructors. The hands on knowledge and excellent teaching skills will long be remembered by each and every one of us. Three in our group have attended previous Fire College classes over the years. The level of instruction for this class was kept at that high standard. Keep up the good work and be safe. Shawn Blomeker did our class on Fire Behavior and Smoke to a packed house. Everyone raved about the training. One was heard to say it was the best training I ve been to. The demo at the end of the class was excellent. It demonstrated backdrafts, flashovers and smoke explosions so everyone could physically see them. WEB SITE www.fsi.illinois.edu IFSI s web site is your main source of information about class offerings and schedules. An interactive state map enables you to click on your county to see what classes are available near you. The web site also offers online registration for Fire College and many other classes. Check the website regularly for updates and to check for newly added classes in your area or on topics that will help you advance in skills or knowledge. IFSI LIBRARY The IFSI Library is part of the state library system and provides you and your department access to training aids and other resources. Check IFSI s Library web site for available resources and access to the Illinois Firefighter Line of Duty Deaths Digital Database. DOWN AND DIRTY TRAINING PROGRAM Thanks to funding from the Illinois Firefighter s Association, IFSI has produced and distributed a series of Down & Dirty training packages on Fire Fighting Skills, Engine & Pump Operations, Rural Water & Tender Operations and Fireground Support & Aerial Operations. The first three products are available for download from the IFSI virtual campus. Look for the updated Fire Fighting Skills Training Package in 2012! Fire Attack Operations will follow. The delivery dates will be announced on the IFSI web site. WINTER FIRE SCHOOL The two-day 2012 Winter Fire School (January 28-29, 2012) will return to the Learning Resource and Research Center. Registration opens November 1, 2011. FIRE COLLEGE The Annual Illinois Fire College, which began in 1925, is the oldest continuous fire school in the nation. This four-day event (June 7-10, 2012) brings together nearly 1,000 students and instructors from around the country. It provides both hands-on and classroom sessions for career and volunteer firefighters and officers. Registration opens April 9, 2012. Online registration is the best way to assure you get the classes you want. What can you learn to bring back to your department? PROPANE (LP) FIRE TRAINING The Illinois Propane Education and Research Council (IPERC) provides funding for IFSI to deliver live propane (LP) fire training to local fire departments at no fee to the department. Look for classes in your area or submit a request (through the IFSI web site) to hold your own class. HOMELAND SECURITY TRAINING IFSI is active in delivering homeland security training and workshops to help communities better plan and prepare for major emergencies. Much of this training is available at no fee to the departments. This training is generally interagency and includes other first responders and government officials, to help them meet NIMS training requirements. WILDLAND FIRE FIGHTING TRAINING Through a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IFSI is offers several wildland fire fighting classes that acquaint firefighters with the skills needed to contain and extinguish a wildfire in a rural or urban interface setting. IFSI is expanding these course offerings in 2012, with several higher-level classes to aid departments, private companies, and public landowners to mitigate their wildland fire fighting risks. CORNERSTONE PROGRAM Through a close partnership with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Cornerstone Program provides a variety of classes to aid fire departments to train their members in core emergency response areas. Many of these classes are conducted at local fire departments and at Regional Training Centers. See the IFSI web site for currently scheduled classes in your area, or call your regional representative to schedule a class for your department, association, or division. ONLINE COURSES IFSI s online courses offer students and departments the opportunity to learn right in the fire house and at home. With blended classes, students and departments save on travel and lodging expenses by completing much of the work on the computer then finishing with the hands-on, practical components at IFSI s Champaign campus or at a Regional Training Center. IFSI is continually developing new classes. Visit the ONLINE LEARNING section on IFSI web site for complete details and class listings. EMS CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs) Many IFSI courses are eligible for EMS CEUs. Courses that have been accepted by the Illinois Department of Public Health for EMS CEUs are indicated on the course description pages on the IFSI website. Remember that per Section 515.590 (2) (A), 77 ILL. Adm. Code 515, no more than 25 percent of those hours may be in the same subject. MONTGOMERY GI BILL The State of Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs has approved ten IFSI courses for reimbursement to qualifying veterans. Visit the IFSI web site for details. COLLEGE CREDIT The University of Illinois and the Fire Service Institute are located within the Parkland Community College District and have partnered with Parkland College for the benefit of IFSI students. Many IFSI courses receive college credit from Parkland College with no additional effort on the part of the student. Please visit the IFSI website and follow the link under COURSE INFORMATION for additional details, contact information, and frequently asked questions about this program. PRO BOARD ACCREDITATION Several IFSI courses have been accredited by the Board on Fire Services Professional Qualifications (Pro Board). These courses allow the student to apply for certification from the Pro Board upon successful completion of all IFSI course requirements and prerequisites. While the classes were originally planned to serve Illinois Department of Defense agencies, certification can also be earned by municipal firefighters. This is not a replacement for state certification, but is a certification that is nationally recognized. The process for becoming ProBoard certified varies slightly with each course due to differences between national requirements and state training objectives. Visit www.theproboard.org for more information. For additional information, please contact Assistant Director Brian Brauer via email at brbrauer@fsi.illinois.edu NATIONAL FIRE ACADEMY (NFA) Each year different direct delivery classes are provided around the state by NFA instructors and are delivered at Fire College. Plus IFSI instructors can deliver, at no cost, up to 17 different NFA Handoff courses. IFSI has a number of our courses,(fire Officer Series, HazMat Ops, Tech A, B, and Arson I, II and III) that are endorsed by the NFA. Most technical rescue courses and classes such as Fire Apparatus Engineer, EMT-B and Unified Command are also endorsed by NFA. This means the courses have been reviewed by the NFA, and students receive a dual IFSI/NFA certificate. Volunteer fire officers are eligible to attend certain NFA six-day classes in Emmitsburg, Maryland, under the Volunteer Incentive Program. There is no charge for VIP courses. More details are available on the IFSI web site at www.fsi.illinois.edu.
