APPLEBY COLLEGE FRANCE CURAÇAO The Appleby College Summer Travel Academy offers students in grades 10-12 the opportunity to learn through hands-on, in-country experiences. Students will earn Ontario Secondary School Diploma credits while living in unique, carefully chosen international locations. Courses provide students with the experience and excitement of a summer spent abroad, and awaken a passion for education outside the classroom. The Summer Travel Academy's international trips and their respective excursions are all academically relevant, and have been selected and developed to enhance both curriculum and the overall student experience. This year s trips include both France and Curaçao for their international flavour and premier location. WHAT MAKES THE APPLEBY COLLEGE SUMMER TRAVEL ACADEMY STAND OUT? 1. Academic Rigour Our month-long credit programs benefit from the direct involvement of Appleby faculty at all stages of curriculum development. Upon successful completion of our courses, Appleby College credits are granted for official recognition on a student's Ontario Secondary School Diploma transcript. Students can expect to be fully prepared for the next level in their chosen subject area in the upcoming school year. 2. All trip aspects have been carefully planned and budgeted for from the moment of departure to the time students return to Canada. Premier Experience Premium destinations have been selected to enhance the curriculum in meaningful ways, tying in the rich culture, important history and unique environments into each respective program. French language students will visit historically significant locations in France, the Pyrenees and Basque Country in Spain, while Biology students in Curaçao will be studying one of the most fascinating coral reefs in the world. 4. Safety and Security In-depth exploratory site visits have been completed for all chosen locations, and their safety and security carefully vetted. Through Appleby College, the Summer Travel Academy is a member of the International SOS alert and emergency support system (www.internationalsos.com) whose in-country knowledge and networks support, protect and advocate for our students and staff through their abilities to assess, advise and assist as needed in a vast range of international crises ranging from severe weather to political unrest. 5. Residential Life Program Staffed by dedicated student life instructors, students will enjoy a robust and social residential life program. These highly qualified and trained individuals provide a continuous support system for the duration of the program. Residential Life staff are hired and trained locally based on rigorous qualifications, including prior experience working with youth in a similar program setting.
FRENCH LANGUAGE IN AQUITAINE, FRANCE June 30 to July 28, 2018
Overview Far away from the City of Lights, the people of Southwest France enjoy a culturally rich and peaceful lifestyle, and live surrounded by such historically significant locations as the Basque Capital of Bayonne and the UNESCO village of Saint-Émilion. Students enrolled in the French program will experience a taste of this old-world life during their month-long stay in France s culturally significant Aquitaine region, in the quiet seaside town of Vieux-Boucau-les- Bains. From this home base they will enjoy several weekly excursions in addition to completing Ontario Ministry of Education mandated classroom hours. Excursions and Events Students participate in 10+ full-day excursions to various culturally significant locations, with a focus on academically relevant tourism and exposure to the depth of history of the area, such as: Discover the medieval city of Bayonne Explore the UNESCO village of Saint-Émilion Visit the Chateau de Pau Practice French at the famous French Markets Engage in Basque Culture in Espelette Learn to surf on the Côte d Argent Relax on the Beach of Kings, in Biarritz Ride the Train de la Rhune in the Pyrenees Eat tapas in San Sebastian, Spain Play rugby with professional players Accommodations Students will stay at the Centre Nouvel Horizons, located in Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains, 200m from the beach on the salt water lake, and 900m from the ocean. Along with staff, students will stay in dormitory-style, single gender accommodations with shared washroom facilities. Linens and WiFi are included, and meals and classes are provided on-campus. After the final exam, students will spend the last two nights of the program in the centre of historic Bordeaux before returning home. MARINE BIOLOGY IN CURAÇAO July 5 to August 2, 2018
Overview The southern coast of the island of Curaçao is home to an exceptionally beautiful, complex and at-risk coral reef. It is also home to the CARMABI Marine Research Station, where students will live while studying marine biology in its truest form at 16m below sea level. In the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea, students learn from experts about safe scuba diving while participating in PADI open water dive certification training. Students will experience hands-on learning in a marine biology setting and earn a Ministry of Ontario high school credit. CURAÇAO CARMABI MARINE RESEARCH STATION Excursions and Events Complete PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Certification Experience an underwater classroom with an estimated 20 open water dives (accommodations will be made for those preferring to snorkel) Discover the historic UNESCO city of Willemstad Explore the limestone bluffs of Shete Boka National Park Hike the trails of the Christoffel National Park Learn about the geological and historical significance of the Hato Caves Engage in guest lectures by university professors Snorkel with sea turtles at Playa Piscado Relax on the white sand beach of Playa Kenepa Acceptance into this program is pending successful completion of our mandatory swim test. Divers Alert Network (DAN) coverage is required for all students and must be purchased independently (approximately $50). Accommodations Students will stay at the CARMABI Marine Research Station, the largest field station in the Caribbean, located just outside of Willemstad in Piscadera Bay. Along with staff, students will stay in dormitory-style, single gender accommodations with shared washroom facilities. Linens and WiFi are included, and meals and classes are provided on-campus. During free time, students can relax under the palm trees or snorkel the house reef. Also of note, The Dive Shop Curacao is located on-site.
