The South has an excellent group of military generals. 5. The South s Coastline is about 3,500 miles long. 14. The Confederacy is fighting for Independence. 8. Northerners disagreed about the rights and wrongs about slavery. 11. Washington, D.C. lies at the border between the North and the South. 3. The Pivotal Battles Which battles are significant to the course of the war? 1.GETTYSBURG First time Lee ventures north (Pennsylvania) in hopes to end the war. South was looking for shoes and supplies for their army. The South attacks quickly, were unorganized and were defeated with heavy casualties. Marks the high point of the war for the South as they will never again venture that far North. 53,000 Americans die over the course of three days fighting.
