About Peru State An Introduction to Peru State College Peru State College was founded in 1867 as Nebraska s first college and was the third teacher education institution established west of the Missouri River. For 140 years, thousands of young people have crossed the Campus of a Thousand Oaks to become teachers and leaders in Nebraska and throughout the nation. Peru State College admits all graduates of accredited Nebraska High Schools and qualified out-of-state and international students. The philosophy of the College is that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed at the collegiate level. All who have the ability and the willingness to work will have the chance to succeed at Peru State. The College believes in academic excellence, in opportunities for personal growth and in student self-determination consistent with the principles of a democratic society. History In 1867, the same year Nebraska became a state, the new state s Legislature established a training school for teachers at Peru. The school opened on Dec. 2, 1865, when its predecessor, Mount Vernon College, was organized by a group of early settlers who resolved to place the school under the care and management of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Colonel T.J. Majors, Civil War veteran and state legislator, proposed that the school be made into a state university. Although the offer was rejected on June 20, 1867, the Legislature accepted the college as a normal school several months before the state university was established. For the next 38 years, the Peru school was the only teacher education institution in the state. As Nebraska s population increased, the Legislature extended normal schools from two-year to four-year institutions and authorized them to grant the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Education, Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education. At the same time the name of the school was changed from State Normal School to State Teachers College. When the United States entered World War II, the College trained officers for the armed forces. The first of an eventual 500 men in the Navy s V-12 program arrived on campus July 1, 1943. The College operated an accelerated program for both civilian students and naval trainees. In 1963, the school s name was officially changed to Peru State College, and the Bachelor of Science degree was authorized in 1965. Emerging from its role as a singlepurpose teachers college, the College is now a fully accredited state college offering a wide variety of programs to meet the changing needs of southeast Nebraska and beyond. Athletic Director Dick Speas Richard Speas began his role as athletic director at Peru State College in 2006. Speas came to Peru State with a diverse background in higher education, including 13 years of being involved in various roles at the collegiate and secondary levels. Prior to his arrival at Peru State, Speas served as activities director at South O Brien High School in Paullina, Iowa. Speas spent two stints totaling nine years at William Penn University, serving in various roles that included assistant athletic director. Between his roles at William Penn, Speas worked as the inaugural director of athletics at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Va., from 1997-2000. Speas is a native of Union, Iowa, and earned his Bachelor s degree from William Penn University in social science. He completed his Master s degree in sports adminstration at Truman State University. The Speas household includes his wife, Karma, and children, Staci, Shawna, Jentrian, Tierney, Elijah and Brookelyn. The Iowa native earned his Bachelor s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in athletic training from Iowa State University in December 2000. Melvin is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers Association. He has experience working with athletes at the high school, collegiate and semi-professional levels. Brent resides in Peru with his wife, Vickie, and their son, Christopher. Al Wheeler When the Al Wheeler Activity Center was dedicated in 1986, so was the Peru State College Athletic Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize, honor and preserve the memory of those individuals and teams whose contributions have greatly enhanced Nebraska s first and fastest growing college. The Hall of Fame gallery resides in the lobby of the Wheeler Center, named after the first inductee into the Hall of Fame, Alfred G. Wheeler. A candidate can be nominated in one of four categories: coach, player, team or meritorious service. Peru State athletic teams did not have a mascot until 1921. It was then that Baldy Wilcox, the sports editor of the school s newspaper the Pedagogian, and Dean W.N. Delzell decided the pseudo-nickname given to Peru s teams, The Teachers, just didn t fit. Wilcox wanted something a little more intimidating. After a great deal of thought, it came to him: Fight like a Bobcat. Wilcox proposed the mascot to the athletes, who immediately agreed, and the Peru State College Bobcats were born. On Oct. 27, 1927, Peru received a real, live Bobcat. According to the Pedagogian, Peru State was the first team in the conference to actually have a live mascot. The animal was a gift from George Hansen, class of 1912. He offered the bobcat to Dean Delzell who accepted the gift on behalf of the school. Bob lived in a cage south of the Peru State Auditorium until his death in 1938. Bert Swenson Award The Bert Swenson Award was first presented in 1925. Winners are selected on the basis of character, personality, scholarship and loyalty to school traditions and participation in athletics. 2007-08 Bobcat Cheer Squad Glenda Haley Cheerleading Coach Glenda Haley begins her third season as the Bobcats cheer squad coach. Glenda is no stranger on the Peru State campus as she also works as Food Service Director, a position she has held for the past six years. Haley, a native of Texas, resides in Peru with her husband, Mike. They have a son, Pat, who lives in Arkansas. Jari Wehmeier Assistant Cheer Coach Jari Wehmeier is a recent graduate of Peru State College with a Bachelor s degree in criminal justice administration. A native of Hampton, Neb., Wehmeier works in the admissions office as an admissions representative. She is also the senior resident assistant in Morgan Hall. Head Coach Terry Clark Head Football Coach Terry Clark begins his sixth year of coaching the Bobcats this fall. A native of nearby Auburn, Clark has strong ties to Peru State as both a student athlete and as a coach. He was a member of the 1990 NAIA National Championship team and worked as the Bobcats defensive coordinator during the 2000 season under Head Coach Dick Strittmatter. Clark returned to the Cats after spending 2001 as the defensive coordinator at Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., where he also spent two seasons as the defensive secondary coach. Prior to his time at Dakota State, Clark spent three seasons as the defensive secondary coach at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. In addition, he worked as the special teams coach at Auburn High School in 1991. Clark earned his Bachelor s degree in physical education and social and behavioral science from the University of Mary in 1996. He completed his Master s degree in education from Peru State in 2006. Clark and his wife, Anita, have two daughters, Emily (10) and Abbey (7). The Clark s reside in Peru. Q s and A s with Coach Clark Tell us about the 2007 schedule. I like the fact that we are playing teams that have a similar philosophy of athletics. You can see that by the high standards each of the programs have set academically. The defense will need to be a disciplined unit that looks to take advantage of our opponent s mistakes. Summarize your 2007 recruiting class. I like the depth that we have added to our positions. We will need some of the offensive linemen to step up immediately as it will be difficult to replace graduated seniors Bryan Diekmann and Brandon Kirby who anchored the line last season. What are the Keys to Success for this team? We must play within ourselves on offense and defense. In addition, we have to be a disciplined team that works hard to minimize mistakes. 2007 Football Preview Season Overview The 2007 edition of Peru State football is loaded with optimism after the Bobcats turned a 1-10 2005 season into a highly successful 7-4 season in 2006. The Cats of sixth year head coach Terry Clark are chock-full of experience at the offensive skill positions and have a veteran group of defenders led by Street and Smith s First Team Pre-Season All-American defensive end Jeff McQuinn. The Bobcats will play as an NAIA Independent in 2007 after leaving the CSFL following last season. The switch adds several new names to the schedule, including Benedictine College, Iowa Wesleyan and NCAA DII Minnesota State-Mankato. The line-up also includes former CSFL foes Northwest Oklahoma State, Bacone College, Southern Nazarene, Haskell University and Southwest Assemblies of God. The Bobcats round out the schedule with Jamestown College, Valley City State and Waldorf College. The Offense Successful teams have experience, skill and leadership, and this year s edition of Bobcat football has an excellent combination of all three components. Veteran signal-callers Derek Falor (SR, 6-6, 240, Sioux Falls, SD) and Jim Dawson (JR, 6-1, 205, Lincoln) return after having solid seasons running Offensive Coordinator Dick Ramsey s attack. Falor handled most of the snaps in 2006 and completed 52 percent of his tosses (74-143) for 1,144 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was picked-off only five times all season in the Bobcats controlled offense. Dawson saw action in four games and was a 7-17 passer. Coach Clark looks for newcomers Curtis Thompson (6-2, 190, Battle Creek) and Greg Coleman (5-10, 175, Valentine) to battle both incumbents for playing time. This is the most depth we have had at this position in a very long time, said Clark. Any one of the four could be leading our offense by the end of the season. The wide receiver corps is loaded with experience with Jared Gerdes, Eli Brown and Cody Wallinger returning. Gerdes (SR, 5-10, 175, Auburn), an All-CSFL performer in 2006, is the Bobcats breakaway threat, hauling in 37 catches for 603 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. Gerdes is also the Cats return specialist and averaged a solid 23.7 yards per kick return. The lanky Brown (SR, 6-4, 210, Lincoln) returns for his final season after sitting out 2006 with a knee injury. Brown hauled in 41 catches for 599 yards (14.6 yds/rec) in 2005 and gives the Bobcats a large, speedy target. Wallinger (SO, 6-1, 180, Odell) caught 10 balls for 178 yards in 2006 and should increase those numbers this fall. The tight end position will be manned by Ty Ratliff (JR, 6-2, 250, Shendenoah, IA) and Lance Remmers (SO, 6-1, 205, Madison). Both are solid run blockers for a Bobcat ground game that produced 2,256 yards in 2006. All of our receivers are versatile players as most can double as return men, said Clark. We will look to open our offense up more this year to take advantage of that experience. The running back position will have experience and depth with Mike Mertens at tailback and Lynn Meyer at fullback. I think we are capable of having two 1,000 yard rushers this season, added Clark. We have not had this quality of depth in some time. The M and M connection combined for over 1,500 yards last fall and both were named to the All-CSFL honor squad. Mertens (SR, 5-9, 193, Hastings) rushed for a team leading 843 yards on 198 carries for a 4.3 average and10 scores. Meyer (SR, 5-11, 210, Johnson) usually provided the key block for Mertens, but still managed to rush for 725 yards on 110 totes for a team-leading 6.6 yards per carry. Nate Jeter (SO, 6-1, 195, Tarkio, MO) provides a solid backup after rushing for nearly 200 yards as a freshman. Also competing for playing time will be newcomers John Noojin (5-11, 205, Deschler) and Jacob Wit (6-1, 200, Chester). According to Clark, the determining factor for the Bobcats overall success in 2007 will be the play of the offensive line. All- CSFL performers Bryan Diekman and Brandon Kirby graduated. However, three starters return, including tackle Lance Meyer (SO, 6-2, 210, Johnson), guard Greg Ernster (SR, 5-11, 285, Bellevue) and center/guard Bo Robertson (SR, 6-0, 255, Keams Canyon, AZ). Redshirt freshman Quentin Coatney (6-0, 250, Peru), sophomore Chris Haake (5-11, 255, Bellevue), senior Tom Wickard (5-9, 280, Lincoln, NE), junior Grant Brueggemann (6-3, 245, Auburn, NE), and newcomers Mo Karam (6-1, 300, Archibald, PA) and Tony Jannsen (6-2, 280, Auburn) are expected to fill the remaining spots on the O line. We will try to replace Diekman and Kirby by committee with four or five guys vying for time, said Clark. The Defense The Bobcats will use a strong contingent of linebackers to key the defensive side of the football. The Cats made strides defensively in 2006 and have an experienced core group of returning players. Middle linebackers Shane Ryan (SR, 6-2, 214, Greeley), Ryan Sorenson (JR, 6-0, 224, Madison), Ryan Newell (SO, 6-0, 225, Lincoln) and Derek Derr (SO, 6-0, 210, Mastland, MO) have experience and made great strides in the weight room and on the field, according to Clark. Ryan finished third on the team in 2006 with 73 total tackles from his inside spot. The outside linebackers were led by Tyler DeBuhr (SR, 6-1, 190, Auburn) who paced the 06 defense with 89 tackles, 46 of which were unassisted. Alex Meredith (JR, 6-1, 195, Nebraska City) will man the other side with Dan Burki (SR, 5-8, 204, Papillion) backing them up. This group of linebackers made some huge improvements over the past year and we expect them to play at an even higher level this year, said Clark. Our goal defensively is to stop the run and pressure the quarterback. 11

2007 Football Preview Continued As with the offensive line, the defensive line will need to take over the game by controlling the line of scrimmage. Jeff McQuinn (SR, 6-3, 230, Council Bluffs, IA) will lead the group, looking to improve on a breakout season in 2006 when he earned several post-season honors. The hard-nosed McQuinn recorded 62 tackles last season, including 11.5 sacks. He will no doubt have the respect of opposing offenses this time around and will need veterans Matt Carlson (SR, 6-1, 235, Auburn) and Mike Winter (SR, 6-1, 235, Grand Island) to take some of the pressure off. Carlson recorded 36 tackles in 06 and registered 3.5 quarterback sacks. Newcomers Daniel Gill (6-3, 260, Wood River), Jordein McCoy (6-3, 290, Auburn) and Nathan Redwing (6-0, 275, Valley) add size and will need to play early and have some success. A veteran Bobcat secondary returns seven players who started or played extensively in 2006. Leading the charge is four-year starter Dan Strobel (SR, 5-11, 180, Auburn) who was fifth in total tackles last season with 44. Fred Whitted, Jr. (FR, 6-0, 165, Ballwin,MO), Devon Wright (SO, 6-0, 170, Omaha) and Bright Norris (SO, 5-10,180, Lincoln) will man the corner spots while Taylor Spears (SO, 6-1, 190, Chandler, AZ), Blaine Brown (JR, 6-0, 210, Stella) and Marlis Lovelace (SR, 6-3, 190, Omaha) will play safety alongside Strobel. Wright picked off two opposing throws in 2006 to lead the veterans. The special teams will be led by All-CSFL performers Jared Gerdes (PR/KR) and Bryan Miller (K). Miller nailed 28 of 32 points after a touchdown and also was successful on five of nine field goal attempts with a long kick of 41 yards last season. Expect teams to kick away from the speedy Gerdes. The Bobcats will rely on Whitted and Wallinger to provide return yardage. Handling the place kicking duties are Max Kathol (SO, 6-1, 181, Plattsmouth) and Dylan Nippert (R-FR, 5-10, 195, Diller) with Zach Kohloff (SO, 5-10, 165, Corning, IA) handling the punting duties. Coach Clark said We have a senior-laden team that made some major strides in 2006. They have worked hard to get to this point, and I expect this team to have great leadership and chemistry. We have some talented veterans, but I m also excited about our talented recruiting class. 12

Head Coach Lexie Turnbull Lexie Turnbull begins her second season as the head women s volleyball coach at Peru State College. Prior to coming to Peru State, Turnbull, a native of Hibbing, Minn., was the assistant women s volleyball coach at Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. Turnbull also served as lead instructor for four summers with Pacesetter Sports Camps of Minnesota and was a Junior Olympic volleyball coach for two years in Mayville, N.D., and Nashwauk, Minn. This past summer she directed Peru State volleyball camps at several area high schools. Turnbull earned a Bachelor s degree in education from Mayville State University in 2005. She resides in Peru. Assistant Coach Mindy Walker Mindy Walker begins her first season as assistant volleyball coach at Peru State. Walker, a native of Holdrege, was a 1986 graduate of Holdrege High School. She earned her Bachelor s degree in secondary mathematics education from the University of Nebraska Kearney in 1991. She also holds endorsements in coaching and athletic training. Walker brings 16 years of volleyball coaching experience to the Bobcat squad, including 14 years as a high school head coach. She began her career in 1991 when she served as head coach at Silver Lake, Neb. She followed with stints at Blue Hill (1993), Holdrege (1994-2005) and Auburn (2006). As a head coach, Walker s teams reached the district title game on five different occasions. Walker s husband, Kevin, is the assistant principal and activities director at Auburn High School. The couple has a daughter, Rachel (7), and a new addition to the family is due in October. Coach Walker is currently enrolled at Peru State working toward a Master s degree in education. Q s and A s with Coach Turnbull Talk about the 2007 schedule. I like that over all we will be playing a wide variety of teams that we haven t faced in the past, or at least haven t faced for a while. It will be a good test for us to see how well we can do against a new type of competition. I dislike that we have to go down to Branson two times this year. That trip always takes a toll on the team, but the MCAC/KCAC Crossover Tournament will be a great chance for us to face teams from the other half of our region, which will prepare us to see them again in post-season play. What will be the Trademark of this year s Bobcats? Our trademark this year will be that of a mature squad. After getting through last season with a very young squad, we will have 10 returnees this year. I will look to each one of them to exhibit their experience and maturity to create a cohesive squad. What are the Keys to Success for this team? The cohesiveness aspect, both on and off the court, will be our biggest key to success this year. I know this group will be able to accomplish it. With all of our challenges with the ongoing renovation of the AWAC, the most important thing is that our team does not succumb to the pressures of being without and let things that are out of our control get to them. If we can overcome those challenges we will be incredibly successful this season. 32

2007 Volleyball Preview Second-year head coach Lexie Turnbull and her Bobcat volleyball squad are heading into the fall campaign excited about the possibilities and ready to improve on last year s 11-23 overall mark, 8-8 in the MCAC. A solid group of veterans will combine with a talented group of newcomers. The end result should be marked improvement over 2006. The Veterans The 2007 Bobcats will be led by a pair of senior veterans in Keshia Selko and Ashleigh Ravnikar. Selko (Mead) will be returning for her final year at the helm of the Bobcat squad. The versatile senior earned Second Team All-MCAC and Second Team All-Region IV awards in 2006 and led the Bobcats in several statistical categories, including attack percentage (.348), set assists (1025) and service aces (49). I will be looking to Keshia to hold everyone together once again this season, said Coach Turnbull. She does a great job of running a strong offense on the court and keeping everyone on the same page. She is a great communicator with her teammates and coaches. Ravnikar (LaCygne, KS) will be returning for her second season with the Bobcats after transferring to PSC in 06 from Allen County (KS) Community College. Ravnikar is currently an outside hitter, but will possibly be hitting from the right side this season as well. She ranked second on the team with 2.6 kills per game in 2006. Ashleigh is a versatile player and will provide a strong hit from whichever position she ends up in, said Turnbull. She will also bring a positive attitude out on the court. A large and talented junior class will also be relied on heavily by Turnbull. Allison Slager (Papillion) will return for her third season as a Bobcat and was a Second Team All-MCAC selection in 2006. The hard-hitting Slager led the Bobcats in kills (345) and kills per game (3.22) last season. Allison is the most versatile player I have ever seen. She is willing to play wherever she is needed, which meant several different positions for her last year, Turnbull said. This year I will be looking for her strong and consistent swing to be back on the outside again, and she could possibly see some time in the back row as well. Leading the defensive charge will be Afton Burr (Gretna). Afton is incredibly quick and can read hitters very well, said her coach. She provides intensity on the court, and I will be looking to her this year to take more of a leadership role. Burr racked up 663 digs in 06 and also led the team in receptions with 5.1 per contest. Adding more power to the hitting game are Jerlyn Cummins, Jessika Wetzler and Kelley Scanlan. Cummins (Verdon) plays in the middle. Jerlyn came so far last season, I m anxious to see her back in action again. She provides a solid block for us and has developed a much better read on hitters. She will also bring a strong swing out of the middle, said Turnbull. Cummins strong finish last year saw her leading the squad with 121 blocks. The versatile Wetzler (Las Vegas, NV) will work on the right side both as a hitter and as a defensive specialist. Jess is another player that gets jerked around frequently to different positions, but takes each new challenge on with optimism. She worked a considerable amount in the back row toward the end of the season last year and in the off-season as well. I think she will do good things for us and could possibly see time as a right side hitter. Scanlan (Plattsmouth) will also be competing for time on the right side. Kelley is one of the hardest working athletes I ve met and is beyond driven to help the team in any position she can, said Turnbull. Most of Kelley s time this year will be back row on the right or outside with a possibility of hitting on the right side as well. Christina Dewey (Virginia Beach, VA) returns to the squad after sitting out 2006 with knee problems. Christina has worked hard this past season at practices and during offseason practices. She will be working on the right and outside as a hitter. I m anxious to see what she can bring to the team. Defensive specialist Sarah Zink (Omaha) will be redshirting this season due to a torn ACL. Kaitlin Morrow (East Alton, IL) is back for a second season as the team s lone sophomore. Kaitlin was thrown into some different situations last year and as a freshman really stepped up and got the job done, said Turnbull. She ended the season as one of our starting middles, and I will be looking to her again to work out of the middle. She has come a long way since the beginning of last season. She provides a strong block for us. The Newcomers Coach Turnbull hit the recruiting trail hard and is excited about the incoming freshmen. Six recruits complete this year s roster. The group includes setter KT Salberg (Sterling), middle blocker Chelsea LaCroix (Mead), strong outside hitters Chelsea Bergman (Mead) and Danielle Vernon (Fairbury), and defensive specialists Kelly Bush (Arcadia) and Megan Boyle (Plattsmouth). Coach Turnbull said I m anxious to get our season off and running. With the high number of upperclassmen we have this year providing experience, and the skill of our incoming freshmen, we will have a very successful season. 33

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. 2007 Women s Golf Preview The Bobcats look to improve their strong 2007 spring showing as the fall portion of the schedule begins. The Cats finished as the 2007 MCAC runner-up, however, lost the top two individual scorers from the squad. Lindsey Waldrep (Fairbury) and Sara Intieri (Millard West) both graduated. Also gone is last year s coach Kevin Dobbs who headed to Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. Maurtice Ivy, a native of Omaha, will take over the dual role of head golf coach and head women s basketball coach. Returning to the links for the 07-08 Bobcats are a pair of solid golfers who should continue to improve. Senior Whitney Higgins (Nebraska City) and sophomore Leigh Edwards (Humboldt) had strong finishes and will anchor this year s Bobcats. Higgins, in her third season as a Bobcat, had her best rounds in Lincoln at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite, shooting a 90-91. Whitney is a powerful left hander that has all the tools to get her rounds consistently into the 80 s if she can just develop consistency, said Dobbs. She is a hard worker and a tough competitor. Edwards placed 10th at the regional tournament as a true freshman and is a young golfer with power and consistency who also has the competitive edge it takes to be successful. Edwards low rounds in 2006-07 was an 87. Leigh will likely be consistently in the 80 s all year, said Dobbs. She played as our number one or number two golfer all season. With a good year, Leigh could likely contend for a top four finish at Regionals. Also returning to the links for the Cats is senior Sara Intrieri (Millard West). Intrieri will play the fall portion of the schedule only due to a student teaching assignment in the spring. Sara had a low score last year of 87 at the Doane Invitational and played as our second/third golfer all year. She has all the leadership tools to lead the team successfully. Joining the Bobcats this fall is freshman Kendra Kratz (Auburn) who was a consistent low 90 s scorer in high school. Kendra is as ready as anyone to step in and make a charge. If she develops her short game as needed she could really put up some nice scores, added Dobbs. Maurtice Ivy Women s Basketball & Golf Coach Maurtice Ivy begins her first year as the women s golf and women s basketball coach at Peru State College. Coach Ivey comes to the Bobcats from the University of Nebraska-Omaha where she spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach in the women s basketball program. A prep standout at Omaha Central (1980-84), Ivy was a First Team All-Metro selection for four years and was the state s scoring leader for three years. She starred on two state championship teams while at Central before going on to a prolific career at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Ivy was the first player to score 2,000 points during her career at Nebraska. She reached that total, appropriately enough, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Maurtice Ivy Night in February 1988. Ivy led the Huskers to the best record in school history and the Husker s first NCAA tournament bid in 1988. Ivy, whose career point total reached 2,131, was named to the Big Eight s All-Decade Women s Basketball Team for the 1980s. She was a three-time All Big Eight First Team selection while at Nebraska, and was also named Big Eight Player of the Year for Nebraska in 1988 while leading the team to the conference championship. Ivy was a two-time Kodak Second-Team All-American for the Huskers and later went on to play professionally in the Women s Basketball Association for five seasons where she was a two-time MVP in the league. She also led her Hoop It Up 3-on-3 team to four national championships. Ivy was inducted into the Nebraska H. S. Hall of Fame in 1998. She has worked in community relations and youth development for 12 years. Most recently she was a family and community service manager for the Community Development Center Head Start. Ivy earned her Bachelor s degree in communications from UNL in 1992 and completed her master s degree in physical education in 2006 at UNO. 2007 Cross Country Preview The Bobcats cross country team returns four veteran runners and one new recruit for Head Coach Johann Murray. The four returning Bobcats are junior Allison Stockstell [Hamburg, IA], senior Leisha Tennal [Morrill, KS], junior Brittany Schaefer [Omaha, NE] and junior Lindsey Poole [Omaha, NE]. The team s newest member is sophomore Lindsay Dannelly [Lincoln, NE]. Tennal and Dannelly are also members of the Bobcat basketball team and will be doing double workouts for the two sports. We re looking forward to improved times for each of the veteran runners and our new runner, said Murray. A number of factors may affect the performance of the team positively or negatively, such as not running a half and full marathon over the summer, no availability of a pool for workouts during the season due to construction of the AWAC and a tougher schedule. The young Bobcats produced a third place showing in the 2006 MCAC tournament and look to improve on that finish in 07. Stockstell (Hamburg, IA) leads the list of veteran runners after a solid year in which she finished 18th at the league meet. In addition, she led the Bobcats with a personal best 21:10 over 3.11 miles in the Region IV meet. Tennal was named as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2006 and the dual-sport star also recorded a 20th place finish in the MCAC. As a team, the 2006 Bobcats won the league academic award for highest team grade point average. Meet the Team Johann Murray Cross Country Coach Murray begins his third season as Head Coach for Women s Cross Country this fall. Murray understands being competitive. As captain of both the track and cross country teams at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, Murray held the school record in the outdoor mile, indoor mile, indoor 1000 and also set the cross country course record. The season s short, but the training is year-round, he said. It literally takes years to build a great cross country runner. Murray previously taught dance and physical education at Metro State College of Denver in Denver, Colo. He also taught physical education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. Best wishes for a championship 2007 season -Mike Mulvaney 1971 Peru State Graduate Football Alumni, Track and Field Alumni 1995 Inductee into Peru State Athletic Hall of Fame Mike Mulvaney enjoyed sterling careers on the track and the football field before graduating from Peru State in 1971. A native of Independence, Iowa, Mulvaney broke the PSC discus record in his first meet as a freshman, and went on to break his own record five more times. Mulvaney never finished lower than fifth place at the NAIA national meet. On the gridiron, Mulvaney was a four-year letter winner. He didn t start in his first game as a freshman but started every game after that except when he was injured. As a sophomore and a junior he started on both offense and defense. He was a team captain and team Most Valuable Player during his senior season. He also received PSC s Bert Swenson Award as the college s top athlete his senior year. Mulvaney and his wife, Pat, also a PSC grad, have five children and live in Beatrice.
