We have missed getting these for several meetings and would like to get back to doing it. Please consider assisting us. Map Swap Bring any duplicate and/or unwanted maps, to the conference for the Map Swap beginning Thursday after the first day s program and before dinner. The swap will continue through the rest of the meeting on Friday. 2 NEMO Newsletter Travel to MASSART MassArt s seven-building campus complex is located on the Avenue of the Arts, at 621 Huntington Avenue between Longwood Avenue and Evans Way. MassArt s campus is nestled in Boston s Fenway/Back Bay community a short walk from the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with easy access to public transportation. TO MASSART BY CAR From the west: *Mass Turnpike East, Route 90 *Take exit 22, Prudential Center/Copley Square. *Stay to the left (Prudential Center). *Follow ramp to Huntington Avenue. *Continue straight on Huntington Avenue to MassArt on right, two blocks after the Museum of Fine Arts. From the South: *Routes 3, 24, 93 *Follow route 93 north (Southeast Expressway) toward Boston. *Take exit 18, Mass Ave. Follow frontage road to third set of lights. *Take left, to Mass Ave. Follow ramp to first set of lights, crossing Massachusetts Avenue to Melnea Cass Boulevard. *Follow Melnea Cass Boulevard to Tremont Street. *Turn left on Tremont Street and drive one block. *Turn right onto Ruggles Street. *Follow Ruggles Street to Huntington Avenue (at trolley tracks). *Take a left onto Huntington Avenue. *MassArt is one block up on the right. From the North: *Route 93 *Follow Route 93 South toward Boston. *Take exit 26, Storrow Drive/North Station *Follow signs to Storrow Drive. Travel Storrow Drive to Copley Square/Back Bay exit (exit left). *Turn Right onto Beacon Street. Follow Beacon Street to Exeter Street. Take a left onto Exeter Street and follow to Hungtington Avenue. *Take a right onto Huntington Avenue and follow it to the college. *MassArt is on the right, 2 blocks after the Museum of Fine Arts. Directions to MassArt Parking Lot From main campus at 621 Huntington Avenue (corner of Huntington and Longwood) *Take left onto Longwood, crossing over the trolley tracks. *Go straight to the stop sign. *Take a left at the stop sign and then take first right onto Ward Street. *MassArt s parking lot is short distance on the left. COMMERCIAL PARKING Public parking facilities around campus are reasonably convenient and hourly rates do vary. MassArt does not validate parking. Below is a list of a few commercial-parking facilities near the MassArt campus. *The Museum of Fine Arts, 20-26 Museum Road *Boston s Children s Hospital, 300 Longwood Ave. *Brigham and Woman s Hospital, 80 Francis Street *Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on Binney Street (off of Longwood) *The Galleria, 350 Longwood Ave. at Brookline Ave. ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION Train: The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority MBTA services Greater Boston as well as most of eastern Massachusetts by commuter rail, rapid transit lines, commuter boat, buses, and light rail vehicle. The MBTA provides service directly to the door of the college by both bus and the Green Line. Road Map Collectors Association Map Expo 2005 Highland, Indiana September 16-17 If you can be in the Chicago area on the Sept.16-17 weekend, try to attend. It is the world s biggest and best event for road map collectors. You won t be disappointed. The Friday event is for RMCA members only; Saturday is open to the public (for browsing and buying). Ristow Prize For Academic Achievement In The History Of Cartography And Map Librarianship The prize, awarded since 1994, recognizes academic achievement in History of Cartography or Map Librarianship, and honors the legacy of Dr. Walter Ristow, Chief Emeritus of the Geography & Map Division, Library of Congress, and co-founder and first president of the Washington Map Society. THE AWARD -- $1000 cash award, a one-year membership in the Washington Map Society, publication of the paper in The Portolan: the journal of the Washington Map Society. Honorable Mention may be awarded for a paper at the judges discretion. WHO MAY APPLY Full or part-time undergraduate, graduate, and first year post-doctoral students attending accredited U. S. or foreign colleges and universities. ENTRY CRITERIA Research papers or bibliographic studies related to cartographic history or map librarianship and completed in fulfillment of course work requirements. The text, in English, and documented in a style selected by the author may not exceed 7,500 words. FORMAT Three unbound copies with a title page and cover sheet including the entrant s name, address, telephone number and e-mail address JUDGING CRITERIA Three broad criteria: (1) importance of research (originality, sources, etc.), (2) quality of research (accuracy, source reliability, etc.), (3) writing quality (clarity, command of cartographic terms, etc.) DEADLINE Not later than 1 June, 2005 and mailed to Robert G.
