Information Note for the Homemaker service Limerick City Homemaker Family Support Service Barnardos & Limerick City Children s Services Committee (CSC) What is Barnardos? Barnardos supports children whose well being is under threat, by working with them, their families and communities and by campaigning for the rights of children. Barnardos was established in Ireland in 1962 and has over 42 centres around Ireland providing direct support to children and their families. What does our service do? Limerick City Homemaker Family Support Service is a new service is managed and delivered by Barnardos, funded by Limerick ABC Start Rite, Limerick City and Council Social Interventions fund, TUSLA, Limerick CYPSC and Barnardos. It is a home based family support service that emphasises working with parents in a practical way to support them in their parenting capacity and household routines. It is an early intervention; outcomes focused Programme that works with families with additional needs (Levels 2-3 on the Hardiker Model). The Homemaker Family Support Service provides practical, home-based support (such as helping the family to get ready for school, prepare meals, manage the household, etc.) to families that are struggling to cope with the demands of daily life for a range of reasons. It is a flexible service that works with families at key periods during the day such as mornings/getting ready for school and evenings (family meals, homework, and bedtime), or at other times identified in partnership with the family. Where do we work? Limerick City Homemaker Family Support Service works with parents primarily in their homes across the urban area of Limerick City. The administrative base for the staff team is Barnardos, St. Mary s National School, Bishop St, Limerick. Who do we work with? The Homemaker Service works directly with parents. The approach upholds community development and family support principles, working in partnership with parents to enhance their capacity to support and care for their children. All work is done in partnership with the family rather than on their behalf. An interagency approach is key to successful outcomes for families engaged with the service. Referrals for the Homemaker Service are likely to come primarily from Public Health Nurses, Schools and other community organisations etc.

Job Purpose To work with families to develop the skills to fully meet their children s needs. Core Job Requirements To identify the needs of families referred to the post in conjunction with the key worker and other project staff and family. To prioritise need and devise an intervention plan in consultation with the Line Manager. To offer practical advice and support to families to develop the skills to meet their children s needs on an ongoing basis, e.g. budgeting, home management, hygiene and nutrition, play, behaviour management, etc. To network with other agencies in consultation with the key worker to ensure an integrated approach to family needs. To review progress on an ongoing basis with the Line Manager and adapt intervention plan accordingly. To be vigilant for signs or concerns of physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect or regarding the welfare of children. To immediately bring any concerns to the attention of the child s Key Worker and the Designated Person and in keeping with Barnardos Child Protection Policy. To record concerns promptly and accurately.

To assist project staff in the delivery of other programmes within the project. To gather information statistics and prepare reports as required, including administration of databases as appropriate to the role. To identify and document to line manager any unmet needs of children/young people/carers/families within the service and to participate in the advocacy work of the agency. To supervise students and volunteers where necessary and to ensure they are aware of all Barnardos policies and compile placement reports as appropriate. Requirements Specific to this Post Support the head(s) of the household to perform a variety of household management tasks such as meal planning, grocery shopping, food preparation, housecleaning, dishwashing and laundering. Support the family to establish an orderly household routine which meets the educational, social and emotional needs of the children. Teach, demonstrate, and encourage clients in household management, household maintenance and personal and child care. Maintain file records on the work undertaken with the family and to complete reports outlining work completed. Report regularly to the designated supervisor and undergo staff supervision at specified intervals. Requirements of all Barnardos staff Commitment to the purpose of Barnardos and to work within the values, policies and procedures of the organisation and in the context of current legislation and regulations. To participate in regular supervision with your line manager. To actively participate in team and staff meetings and service reviews/ evaluations and to contribute to the development of policy and practice with your area of work and within Barnardos as a whole. To report any area of concern to your line manager in a timely manner To show reasonable flexibility in relation to hours of attendance to meet the needs of the work. Work during unsocial hours may be required. Have a flexible approach to the work in response to organisational change, development and review of best practice.
