about access college foundation The ACCESS Program inspires the hope in low-income students that a college education is attainable, supports them in achieving the requirements for college acceptance, guides them through the college application process, assists them in gaining the funds to attend college, provides advising and scholarship support while enrolled in college to ensure that they remain in school and complete their degree programs, and helps connect ACCESS Scholars to internship and job opportunities after college graduation. Since 1988, ACCESS has assisted nearly 60,000 local public high school students with enrolling in college, and has secured over $565 million in scholarships and financial aid for these students. The Foundation has awarded $9 million in ACCESS Last-Dollar Scholarships, bridging the gap between the amount of financial aid received by a family and the final cost of attending college. 2
access 2018 College commitment day What started as a national movement in 2016, National College Signing Day in which ACCESS was one of 1,000 participating organizations across the country is now a highly anticipated local event as ACCESS gears up to host its third annual ACCESS College Commitment Day in 2018. This is a celebratory event to commemorate a student s college acceptance and the filing of their FAFSA form to acquire funding for their education. Nearly 2,200 seniors from the 30 local public high schools served by ACCESS College Foundation attend this event, as well as parents, high school faculty, college faculty, and community leaders. This event is held at Old Dominion University s Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia. The master of ceremonies is local radio personality, Shaggy from Z104 s Z Morning Zoo, who helps make this high-energy, school-spirited celebration for high school seniors an unforgettable tribute to their educational achievements. Four local news stations (FOX 43, WTKR Channel 3, WVEC Channel 13 and WAVY TV 10) covered this event in past years, in addition to live coverage by WTKR s Coast Live television broadcast in 2017. The local news and talk show airings made it possible for the entire community to join in the celebration and be inspired by ACCESS student leaders as they declared their commitment to higher education.
