JUNE 9 th & 10 th 2018 College of Mount Saint Vincent 6301 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY Noon to 6pm riverfestbx.org

RiverFestBX Celebrate the Hudson River in the Bronx P lease join us in celebrating the Hudson River at RiverFestBX, June 9-10, 12-6pm, on the lovely campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Formerly Riverdale RiverFest, the festival is fully embracing its Bronx heritage with a new name, a new river-centric layout and not one, but two days of music, food and activities along the water's edge. RiverFestBX, a treasured community event for nearly a decade, has been produced by KRVC since 2015. The goal of the event is to promote the creation of the Hudson River Greenway and to celebrate the Hudson River. Admission to the festival is free. As the festival has grown it has consistently drawn several thousand participants each year from the Northwest Bronx, New York City and the greater tri-state region. Festival-goers have the opportunity to sail on tall ships, enjoy music by talented local and national performers, experience interactive exhibits and presentations, and most importantly, enjoy recreational activities along the banks of the majestic Hudson River. RiverFestBX 2018 will have many of the same attractions as past festivals such as the popular DOT bike helmet giveaway, face painting, miniature golf, bounce house, Animal Care Centers of NYC Pet Adoption Truck and the Bronx Children's Museum Bus, but will also feature Greenway Talks - conversations about the future of our borough with a Hudson River Greenway in it - and a new RiverFestBX Art Show curated by renowned Bronx artist Daniel Hauben. RiverFestBX, in tandem with a concerted grassroots organizing effort led by KRVC, has brought us very close to realizing our dream of an all-waterfront Greenway along the Hudson River. Thanks to funding from State Senator Jeff Klein, the MTA is in the process of finalizing an engineering and feasibility study. With your help, we can get even closer. We look forward to seeing you at RiverFestBX. See the centerfold for more details about the boat rides, art show and live music. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT OUR NEW WEBSITE riverfestbx.org

Boat Rides Featuring The Pioneer The Pioneer was built as a sloop in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania in 1885 to carry sand mined near the mouth of the Delaware Bay to an iron foundry in Chester, Pennsylvania. Ten years later she was re-rigged as a schooner. In the days before paved roads, small coastal schooners such as Pioneer were the delivery trucks of their era, carrying various cargoes between coastal communities: lumber and stone from the islands of Maine, brick on the Hudson River, and oyster shell on the Chesapeake Bay. Almost all American cargo sloops and schooners were wood, but because she was built in what was then this country s center of iron shipbuilding, Pioneer had wrought-iron hull. She was the first of only two cargo sloops built of iron in this country, and is the only iron-hulled American merchant sailing vessel still in existence. By 1930, when new owners moved her from the Delaware River to Massachusetts, she had been fitted with an engine, and was no longer using sails. In 1966 she was substantially rebuilt and turned into a sailing vessel once again. Today she plies the waters of NY Harbor carrying adults and children instead of cargo in her current role as a piece of living history.
