FOREWORD It is a great pleasure to present the news magazine PETRO TALK, first news letter of Petroleum Engineering department of RGCE. Off late, the department has made new strides in many fields. News letter is an effective tool to communicate with academia, industry and our own students. Petroleum Engineering education is unique, as it has to have larger interaction with industry and professionals. Help and support rendered by industry and professionals to impart industrial visits, project training, guest lectures, conference, etc.,.is highly acknowledged. SPE chapter of the department is very active and has organized NCUHR 2015 recently with support of SPE Chennai section, ONGC and other oil companies. Your valuable inputs will help in enhancing contents of the subsequent editions of Petrotalk. With best wishes Lt. Col. (Prof) Jitendra Prasad Dean& HOD dedicated staff, state of the art laboratories, education programs and professional association that enrich with strong fundamentals and hands-on-experience. Graduates of our program are in demand in private industry, as evidenced by the strong job market and high salaries. The petroleum industry offers a wide range of employment opportunities for petroleum engineering graduates. Exciting experiences range from field work in drilling and producing oil and gas fields to office jobs in small towns and cities. Worldwide travel & overseas assignments are available for interested students. The college is making all efforts to impart qualityeducation and mould the students to acquire necessaryskills to take up challenging assignments after obtainingtheir degrees. The academic year 2014-15 for UG coursecommenced as per guidelines of Anna University. Apartfrom class room teaching, students are given exposureto latest developments/technologies by arrangingguest Lectures and industrial visits. Students are alsoencouraged to present technical papers and participatein technical events to develop their technical andcommunication skills. Quite a few students of ourcollege have won prizes in these events. ANNUAL INAUGURAL CEREMONY OF SPE RGCE STUDENT CHAPTER Date: 6 th August 2014 The Petroleum Engineering department at Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering was established in 2005, making it the first department of Petroleum Engineering in South India. Today the department has expert faculty, a host of The Annual Inaugural Ceremony of the biggest Student Chapter SPE RGCE Chapter was held. New working committee was elected. The Chief Guest was Dr. JOYSULU, ED Basin Manager, Cauvery, and ONGC. Other senior officials from ONGC and SPE, Chennai were also present.

Vice President K.A.G.Sudharshan WORKSHOP/CONFERENCE 19 TH MIDDLE EAST OIL AND GAS SHOW & CONFERENCE part of conference they attached an international quiz competition called PETROBOWL in which our final year students Vignesh, Faizal Ahamed, MuthuKrishnan, Arun.R and Arafat Osman participated and won 4 th place. SPONSORSHIP Mr.Vignesh received a scholarship amount of Rs.35000 to attend PETROBOWL an international quiz competition at Bahrain by the college management. WORKSHOP AT IIT, KARAGPUR IIT Kharagpur department of geology and geophysics conducted PRTHVI 15 geology fest & workshop on 20-22 of March supported by SEG, SPG, and AAPG student s chapters of IIT Kharagpur. Venkatesh. A of petroleum engineering department from RGCE was selected as campus ambassador by team PRITHVI. Along with eleven of our students participated in PRITHVI. Workshop was conducted CAIRN India, ONGC and Schlumberger engineers on core analysis and formation evaluation. AkhilJoji III yr. received a token of appreciation form CAIRN India. APPLIED TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP Our student Muhammad Riyas of final year petroleum engineering had been selected to attend the SPE ATW on HPHT Tackling Challenges & Finding Solutions at Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chennai on 15 th and 16 th May 2015. III- INTERNATIONALONFERENCE ON PETROLEUM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2014 (ICPST- Students from our college participated in the international conference held at the Bahrain International Conference Convention center from 08.03.2015 to 13.03.2015. As a 2014) Dean & HOD made a keynote address on Role of academic-industry interface in education and research for oil and gas industries. 20 of our students participated in

the conference and 1 technical paper had been presented. DEAN&HOD CHAIR PERSON OF SPE, CHENNAI REGION It is a matter of pride that our Dean & HOD, Lt.Col. Jitendra Prasad had been selected as the Secretary of the student chapter Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Chennai region. SYLLABUS COMMITTEE Dean and HOD, Lt.Col. Jitendra Prasad was made as a member of the syllabus committee for Petroleum Engineering & technology by Vice Chancellor, Anna University. INDUSTRIAL VISITS Date: 16 th 19 th September 2014 A four day IV for Final year PE students at Regional Geosciences Laboratory, ONGCL, Chennai. Date: 17 th 18 th September 2014 Drilling Rig Visit for Second year students at PR-ONN-2005/1 Block, E-760-3 Rig, ONGCL, Palar Basin. Date: 13 th 19 th September 2014 Industrial Visit for Third year students at National Institute of Oceanography and IPSHEM, Goa Date: 19 th 27 th September 2014 Industrial Visit for Final year students at WSS Ahmadabad, IRS Ahmadabad and CEWell Vadodara, Gujarat.

Production of Oil from Microwave Cooking by Mr. H Faizal Ahamed, Mr. B Bharath& Mr. V Vignesh FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 5 of our faculty members were provided one week training on Recent Trends in Exploration Techniques at ONGC academy, Dehradun. SUMMER PROGRAM on PETROLEUM REFINING AND PETROCHEMICALS Three of our faculty members V.Sowmya, K.Priyadharshini and M.S.Vijayalakshmi have been nominated and selected for attending the 10 th Summer School Program on Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals at Indian Institute of Petroleum Management (IiPM), Gurgaon. NCUHR 2015, BY SPE RGCE STUDENT CHAPTER, CONCLUDES WITH GREAT SUCCESS National Conference on Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources (NCUHR 2015) was concluded on 6 th March 2015 after eventful two days of serious deliberations. The conference was supported by SPE Chennai section. This first such conference organizes by RGCE. The conference was inaugurated by Chief Guests and Guests of Honor Dr. Sivanesan, Dean AC Tech, Executive Director Asset Manager, ONGC, Karaikal and Executive Director basin manager, ONGC Cauvery basin, Chennai. The function was inaugurated by Rev Dr. Kurian, Chairman RGCE. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr. P.Raja, Mr. Ayyadurai,

GGMs, ONGC, Dr. Santha Kumar, CEO, IPCS, Mr. Sajiv Nair, Sr. VP, RIL, Mumbai, Dr. P N Hajira, Sr. Consultant, CBM, New Delhi, Dr. Daniel L Porr, Blade Energy, USA, Professors from IIT, Anna University and other institutes, Experts from various companies, students from various parts of the country participated. The topics deliberated were Shale gas, CBM, HTHP Reservoirs / Tight gas, Gas Hydrates. were also given to I and II best papers. Mr. Arafat Osman, Organizer and President, SPE, RGCE Student Chapter thanked delegates, SPE and experts for success of this endeavor. ACHIEVEMENTS About 25 technical papers and 10 keynote addresses were made during two days of deliberations. Apart from Chennai, delegates from following Petroleum Institute s Student chapters and Universities attended: Graphic Era University, DIT, Dehradun, RGIPT Raibareilly, JNTU, Delta Institute, Vizag, AIMET University, JCT College, Coimbatore, Archana College, Sathak Mohamad College, Hydrebad. Jegan Gold Medalist Karuppaih 2 Rank Students of Petroleum Engineering department have excellent academic records. They are encouraged and taught some premier qualities like leadership, networking, etc. by making them to organize guest lectures, conference, etc. with the help of our department head and faculty members. The valedictory function was chaired by Mr. Cherian, GM-HR, ONGC, Dr. Porr, Blade Energy, USA, Dr. Sajiv Nair, Sr. VP, RIL, Dr. Ravindran and Prof Jitendra Prasad, RGCE and SPE Chairperson, SPE Chennai. It has summed up the proceedings and compiled the future course of action. Best paper awards
