The importance of a college degree cannot be overestimated in this, The Age of Information. But even many of the brightest college graduates, with excellent educational backgrounds, are working well below their abilities. ASA has designed programs that meet the needs of a continuously and swiftly-evolving job market. Letter from the Athletic Director Dear Prospective Student-Athlete, 4 On behalf of the ASA-The College for Excellence, I encourage you to inquire about ASA as a place to further your athletic and academic career. We are a brand new and enthusiastic athletic department that competes at the Division I level under the sanctions of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). ASA intends on building a tradition of success both on the field and in the classroom. Currently we field teams that are competitive both regionally and nationally in the following sports: football, men s soccer, men s and women s basketball, baseball, women s tennis, and cheerleading. In addition to our intercollegiate programs, we also offer a very competitive intramural program. During our young existence as a department, the theme has been one of commitment and dedication to our student-athletes and athletic staff. Even though winning is gratifying, we believe the most important part of an intercollegiate athletic program is the quality of the educational experience. It is our hope and goal as a department, while attending as a student-athlete at ASA, you will meet new people, learn and, be challenged, both as an individual and as a team, within the structure of a competitive athletic career. About ASA - The College for Excellence ASA s modest roots began in 1985 with professor and 12 students in a small Brooklyn classroom. Known then as Advanced Software Analysis, the institute focused on computer programming, as New York had a dire shortage of qualified mainframe programmers at that time. Since then, the college has grown to more than 5,000 students and 2 large, centrally-located campuses in midtown Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn. Today, in addition to computers, our programs focus on the rapidly-growing industries of healthcare, business and criminal justice. Over the years, as technology revolutionized how every major industry operates, ASA created and updated programs of study to meet new market needs. Consistent with the demands and capabilities of our student body, which includes highly motivated and mature immigrants, ASA programs have always featured a hands-on training component. 2010 marks the 25th Anniversary of ASA s existence. From its humble beginnings, ASA is now authorized by the New York State Board of Regents to confer Associate of Occupational Studies and Associate in Applied Science degrees. The school s degree and certificate programs are registered by the State Education Department. Most recently, ASA has also been regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. 6
Division of Business Academic Divisions ASA s Business Administration program integrates professional courses into the latest trends in business management. The Associate Degree programs combine theory with extensive computer applications so that students are prepared for both administrative and managerial positions within various types of organizations. The curriculum is rounded out with general education and office technology courses and electives. It is through these courses that students are able to acquire a variety of intellectual and personal competencies that are generally perceived to characterize successful business managers. Sports Management Focus Sports Management is an elective option under the Division of Business within the Office Administration and Technology major. The Sports Management focus is geared toward students who have interest in the different aspects of the business of sports including, but not limited to, athletic administration, coaching, sports marketing, athlete representation (sports agent), athletic health maintenance, and sports psychology. Currently, this elective option offers the following courses: Intro to Sports Management, Sports Marketing, and Sports Leadership. Division of Computer Technology Computer Programming and Information Technology provide essential functions for almost all organizations worldwide. These systems demand a focus on the organization of computers, the theory which underlies their operation, and their applications. In using these systems, professionally trained programmers and network engineers serve in wide areas of business, at all levels of government, private sector, in public and social services establishments. Division of Criminal Justice The A.A.S. degree program in Criminal Justice provides students with a broad-based, sophisticated understanding of the role of the criminal justice system in American Society. Students acquire the knowledge, values, and skills that will enable them to analyze rationally, the problems of the criminal justice system and the needs of society in a manner in keeping with democratic traditions of law, social well-being, and individual rights. Division of Health Disciplines The Division of Health Disciplines offers a broad array of health related degree and certificate programs. The programs combine quality classroom and clinical instruction to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as health professionals, who care for the sick, administer hospitals, attend to the pharmaceutical care needs of the public, and assist elderly or physically challenged individuals. Division of Arts and Sciences Division of Arts and Sciences supports all of ASA s degree and certificate programs. It provides a wide range of general education and liberal arts courses. Remedial and ESL (English as a Second Language) courses are also administered through this Division. 7
Academic Support Services astudent & Academic Advisement The overall objective of academic advising is to help students realize the maximum educational benefits available to them at ASA - the College for Excellence. Academic advising may include all aspects of academic program planning, including making decisions on adding, dropping, or substituting courses; career guidance; involvement in extra-curricular activities, etc. Academic advisors help students to understand their educational needs and aspirations as well as how to utilize the resources available at the college to help them achieve their goals. After the students register, advisors are assigned to them from the academic department where they are enrolled. alearning Center The ASA Learning Centers offer students free, unlimited tutorials to help them reinforce and apply key concepts in their class work. This tutoring program plays a crucial role in ASA s strategy for providing students with the means to adequately prepare for employment. At the beginning of every semester, each Center posts a master schedule with the times tutors will be available for courses in every major field. Additional tutoring can also be arranged in any subject based upon individual student need. Prospective students may receive free ESL and math tutoring at the Learning Centers. atutoring by Professor At ASA you are not just another number, especially when it comes to giving students top notch academic support. This is why each academic department has designed a program where the professors will be available for extra tutoring during their office hours. The unique academic feature allows the student to be one-on-one with their professor for any extra help and guidance that they would want in order to maximize their success and understanding in that particular subject. The faculty at ASA truly wants their students to succeed! awriting Center The Writing Center is an essential and vital part of the ASA community, where students are given the opportunity to learn in a seminar-style, innovative environment. It is dedicated to helping students cope with the challenges they face as college-level writers. The multi-media resources include computer workstations, and the latest in audio/visual equipment. The college s literary journal, ASA Writer, is a semi-annual publication created under the aegis of the ASA Writing Center. The journal is a brilliant collection of writings produced from the experiences of a multicultural community of ASA students. Published authors, professional writers and scholars lead workshops and seminar discussions, which provide alternative forums for students to receive support in completing their writing assignments. aarthur J. Hidalgo Library The ASA libraries actively support our student s efforts to be successful in reaching their academic and occupational objectives. The library collections are both physical and virtual, with over 14,000 physical volumes (books, multimedia items, journals, etc.), and almost 50,000 electronic books plus 38 electronic databases, all accessible through the ASA website, either on or off campus. All course textbooks are available for use in the libraries. The New York State Education Department, New York State Library and Board of Regents recognized the ASA libraries with the designation Advanced Electronic Doorway Library. The ASA libraries are an Associate Member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Mid Atlantic Region, and members of METRO, the Metropolitan New York Library Council. All library staff members are dedicated to helping students with their research and information needs. 8
Student Life Residential Life The ASA dormitory, located in the affluent area of Brooklyn Heights, houses the majority of the student-athletes at ASA. The five-story facility housing close to 100 students includes full bathrooms on each floor, study rooms, and a student lounge wired with Wi-Fi. The dorm is located only walking distance from the Brooklyn campus and is conveniently located near subway and bus lines, as well as the Long Island Railroad Terminal on Atlantic Avenue. Surrounded by a variety of shopping centers and cultural attractions, the building is steps away from the best view of Manhattan from Brooklyn along the Promenade. Other alternative housing options are available. Fitness Center Completed in the fall of 2010, the ASA fitness center serves as a very important tool for student-athletes in and out of season. Every student-athlete now has access to the 1,100 square-foot training facility. The room is fully equipped with six platforms, four glute ham raises, two pull-downs, and a full set of chains, bands, dumbbells, and kettle bells, and cardio machines; other amenities include two large flat-screen televisions and a state-of-the-art stereo system. Conveniently located on the lower-level of the ASA dormitory, the fitness center is also outfitted with lockers and showers. Clubs and Activities In addition to intercollegiate and intramural athletics, ASA sponsors a full range of clubs and activities. Coaches Section 10 Head Coach - Francisco Perez Francisco Perez enters his third season as the Head Coach of the ASA Baseball team. Perez continues to bring with him a reputation for winning and a talent for imparting his own passion for competing on to his players. Throughout his years coaching players of a wide range of ages and abilities, the 2010 Region XV Division I Coach of the Year has shown a knack for energizing teams and turning them into winners. In his two previous seasons at the helm of the Avengers baseball team, Perez has accumulated a 48-25 overall record, including an amazing 31-12 record in 2010. The stellar campaign helped ASA garner numerous individual and team accolades, including a NJCAA Region XV Division I Championship, a Finalist appearance in the Region XX Championship Tournament, and seven 2010 Region XV Division I All-Region selections. Perez also helped produce the 2010 Region XV Division I Player of the Year, outfielder Juan Arroyo (Bronx, NY/James Monroe). Before launching the ASA program, Perez was the head coach at Globe Institute of Technology, where he took the Knights from a 9-21 record the year before he arrived to playing.500 ball and advancing to the finals in the 2008 NJCAA regional playoffs in his first year coaching the team. In addition to his commitment to ASA, Perez is the director of baseball operations for the NY Gothams, a respected youth program he has headed since the organization s inception in 2000. Over the course of eight seasons with the NY Gothams, the teams he has coached have amassed an impressive 371-129 win/ loss record. His tournament wins are numerous and highlighted by three National Championships, including the 16U ECTB National Championship in 2006, the 16U AAU National Tournament in 2003 and the 14U AAU Disney World Championship in 2002. In addition to team wins, over 15 of the NY Gothams players that Perez has coached have been recruited to play for colleges including Fordham U., Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Wake Forest, St. John s U., University of Michigan and Wesleyan University. Ten players have been drafted by professional teams and the entire organization is especially proud of the Milwaukee Brewers 2008 call up of catcher Angel Salome, who works out with the NY Gothams in the off season and also helps to coach some of its players.
Coaches Section Before joining ASA, Perez, directed the baseball program for Trinity School, an academically top-ranked private school located in Manhattan. Unfazed by the team s 50-plus-year championship drought and an unimpressive 1-12 win/loss record posted in the year prior to his arrival, Perez created a program with a focus on individual player development and within four years brought home the Independent Schools State Championship. More than just a coach, Perez knows personally what it takes to compete in the game at its highest levels. At the age of 17, he attended Hill College on full scholarship and was recruited by the Seattle Mariners organization. For two years he was a middle infielder in the Mariners farm system, followed by a year with the New York Yankees. He then played in two independent leagues before transitioning into coaching. Perez has placed a priority on maintaining ties with the many coaches and organizations with which he has contact over the course of his years playing the game. Francisco Perez Office: 718-522-9073 (x2225) Email: coachperez@asa.edu Assistant Coach - Marshall Shimasaki Marshall Shimasaki enters his second season as Head Coach Francisco Perez s Assistant Coach. Coach Shimasaki was at integral part of ASA s successful 2010 season, which yielded a Region XV Division I title, a Region XX Championship Finalist appearance, and several Avengers All-Region XV honors. He comes to ASA with a number of years coaching youth baseball on the travel and AAU circuit. For the past four years, he has been affiliated with the NY Gothams, a premier travel baseball organization where he worked with Coach Perez as an assistant coach/team administrator. During two of those years, Shimasaki served on the organization s board of trustees. With many years of experience in private business, Coach Shimasaki will bring his knowledge of organization and management to an already successful baseball program. As Coach Perez s assistant, Coach Shimasaki s responsibilities will include recruiting, overseeing the team s strength and conditioning sessions, practice and in-game coaching, and heading the team s academic monitoring program. 11

Coach Rabinowitz is a 2009 graduate of Fordham University and four-year letterman for the Rams as a pitcher with a number of starts during his career there. Rabinowitz is a product of the Francisco Perez system having played as a youth for him and captaining a number of Coach Perez s travel teams from 2001-2005. Prior to coming to ASA, Rabinowitz has been the head coach of a number of the NY Gothams travel teams. Assistant Coach - Felix Roche Felix Roche enters his third season with the Avengers, having served on Head Coach, Francisco Perez s original staffs with the Avengers. Coach Roche played his high school baseball in the Bronx, NY at Dewitt Clinton High School. He then went on to play college baseball at Hostos Community College from 2001-2003. Before making his way into the coaching profession, Roche was selected to play in the exclusive Dominican Republic National tournament twice. Coach Roche serves as a youth coach with the prestigious NY Gothams baseball organization. He has been the lead supervisor at a number of baseball camps. Roche s college coaching experience dates back to 2008 when he served as an assistant coach at Globe also under Coach Perez. 12

2010 Season Review After posting a respectable 17-13 record during its inaugural season in 2009, the ASA baseball team came back with a bang in 2010. The team finished with a 31-12 overall record, including a number of team & individual highlights. The Avengers ended the regular season with a 27-10 win-loss record, scoring key wins against Region XV powers Nassau Community College (Division III) and Monroe College (Division I). Between March 13, 2010 and May 2, 2010, the Avengers posted 25 wins to only six defeats. That strong effort during the regular season carried over into post-season play, where the team would go head-to-head against conference rival Monroe College in a three-game Region XV Division I Championship series. Despite dropping the final two regular season meetings against Monroe, the Avenger bats would come alive in Game 1 of the series, winning in dramatic fashion by the score of 13-12. Game 2 proved that ASA had the right to move on to the Region XX championships in Hagerstown, MD, as freshman lefty pitcher, Michael Avila (Glendale, NY/Aviation H.S.), tossed eight solid innings to get the 12-4 win and series sweep. ASA would make a strong push to the Region XX Tournament Championship round, winning two games against Chesapeake and #1 seeded host Hagerstown before falling to Potomac State in heartbreaking fashion, 12-11, in the finals of the tournament. The successful 2010 season merited a number of individual honors for the Avengers. Sophomore centerfielder, Juan Arroyo (Bronx, NY/Monroe), was 25
2010 Season Review named the Region XV Player of the Year. Arroyo finished the season batting.435 in 40 games with 60 hits, 54 RBIs, scoring 58 runs, and crushing 13 homers. The pitching staff was also well represented by freshman sensation right-hander, Jonathan Sanchez (Cotui, Dominican Republic/Liceo Francisco Carvajal). Sanchez dominated every game he pitched this season going 7-0 with a 1.286 ERA while allowing only 27 hits and striking out 65 batters. The other ASA All- Region pitcher was sophomore righty Luis Nova (Azua, Dominican Republic/ Gregorio Luperon), who finished with a record of 4-1 in ten games played with an ERA of 3.017 and 53 strikeouts. Sophomore Omar Artsen(Brooklyn, NY/ Beach Channel) was named All-Region at second base after hitting.414 on the season, scoring 38 runs in 35 games played, and leading Region XV with 36 stolen bases on 37 attempts. Sophomore Samir Imbert (San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic/San Martin) took All-Region honors at third base hitting.398 with 41 RBIs. Sophomore Marcos Castro (New York, NY/Environmental Studies) was named one of three All-Region outfielders after hitting.383 and scoring 35 runs in 30 games played. Rounding out the All-Region selections was freshman, Joseph Gerena (Bronx, NY/Monroe) who walked away with the honors for the designated hitter after batting.370 with 40 RBIs. 2011 Season Preview The Avengers come into the 2011 season with high hopes of replicating last year s success. 2010 was very good to ASA baseball as they finished the season with a 31-12 record, including a Region XV-Division I Championship and an appearance in the Region XX championship series where they were one win away from the NJCAA World Series play-in game. Five players return from last year s Region XV-Division I championship squad. Here is a look of what to expect from the Avengers in 2011: Pitching The pitching staff will be led by the dominance of the returning Region XV-Division I Pitcher of the Year, sophomore Jonathan Sanchez (Cotui, DR). Sanchez finished the 2010 season with an unblemished 7-0 record while carrying a 1.286 ERA with 65 strikeouts and walking only nine batters. Also returning is hard-throwing righty, Isaac Gil (New York, NY). The 6-foot- 5, 235-pound Gil finished the 2010 season with 42 strikeouts (third on the team) in eight games pitched. Putting an extra emphasis on recruiting pitchers, Coach Perez has added a number of talented starters and relief pitchers to his pitching staff. The starting rotation will mostly round out with freshmen Yeifri Isabel (Bronx, NY), Cesar Estevez (Dominican Republic), Pablo Lora (Jersey City, NJ), and sophomore transfer Yendris Perez (New York, NY). ASA s bullpen will mainly consist of freshmen such as Eury Garcia (Bronx, NY), Fernando Jimenez (Santo Domingo, DR), and Nolan Herrera (Bronx, NY). Position Players The Avengers return an experienced core of their players in the field and at bat. Making the move from shortstop to second base this season is sophomore Deivid Gomez (Santo Domingo, DR). Gomez had a stellar freshman campaign playing in 33 games, batting.352 on 31 hits with 88 at bats, driving in 27 RBIs, and scoring 36 runs. He also finished with a.915 fielding percentage with 34 put-outs, 52 assists, and only eight errors on the season. Another sophomore making a position change this season will be Javier Tavares (Dominican Republic) who will make 29
2011 Season Preview the switch from the bullpen to the outfield. The crafty lefty pitched 16.1 innings giving up only five earned runs. In Taveras two only plate appearances he picked up a hit in each. Behind the plate at catcher will be the consistent sophomore Alberto German (Santo Domingo, DR). German finished 2010 with a.429 on-base percentage, 29 hits, and a.305 batting average. Also back for his second season is first baseman Nelson Arroyo (Bronx, NY). Arroyo made the best of every opportunity he received finishing his freshman season with a.379 batting average with 22 hits on 58 at-bats, including a clutch game-winning RBI double helping ASA advance to the Region XX finals. The coaching staff is very optimistic about the position players in this season s freshman class. Incoming shortstop Yariel Medina (Dominican Republic) will be looked upon as a daily contributor to the offensive and defensive scheme of the team. He will be joined by heralded newcomers in a solid third base glove of Hochiminh Astacio (San Pedro de Macoris), a strong bat in centerfielder Darwin Duran (Dominican Republic), and versatility in Andrickson Zorrilla (Yonkers, NY) and Guillermo Geraldino (Dominican Republic) who will play both the infield and outfield. Geraldino is also expected to impress with his bat. In addition to the players mentioned, there will depth on a daily basis all over the field. 2011 Schedule Outlook ASA will kick off this season the same way they did last season, with a doubleheader against Bronx CC. The double-header will then be followed by a ten-day Spring Training trip down in Cocoa Beach, FL where the team is expected to play a double-header everyday against teams from around the nation as well as a couple of Canadian teams. When the team gets back from Florida they will return to a local junior college schedule against teams such as Sussex, Westchester, Nassau, and Rockland. Further distance trips include Ulster, Lackawanna, and Sullivan. The team will have the most home games scheduled in the program s short history with eight dates at Old Boys High Field in Brooklyn, NY. The Avengers will also have their usual Region XV- Division I match-ups with Globe and rival, Monroe College. 30
