2 Chucks & Tux Overview Chucks & Tux, inaugural fundraising gala, will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 at one of the city s world class music venues WorkPlay. Birmingham residents are excited about the new energy being felt throughout the city, and are eagerly awaiting the next big event to enjoy during the spring months. Chucks & Tux is slated to become one of Birmingham s most highly anticipated social affairs designed to attract a diverse mix of partygoers that include members of the philanthropic community, civic leaders, and both young and seasoned professionals. Attendees are encouraged to wear Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers along with their formal attire to match the distinct flare of the event s overall theme. This event will provide a high-class experience while creating an environment conducive to an evening full of dancing, laughter, and memories. The most unique feature of Chucks & Tux is the display and auction of custom designed Chuck Taylor sneakers created by selected Birmingham City high school students as part of Student Shoe Design Competition. In partnership with UAB s Art & Art History Department and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA), students will have an opportunity to participate in a school district-wide shoe design contest that will showcase their artistic and creative abilities. The winners of the competition will go through a week-long boot camp that will train them on various elements of design and provide them with the resources needed to bring their designs to life. A major part of the marketing campaign involves encouraging attendees to showcase their own creativity by custom designing the sneakers they will wear to the gala. This event will provide a highclass experience while creating an environment conducive to an evening full of dancing, laughter, and memories.
3 Shoe Design Competition Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up. - Pablo Picasso. The Design Idea So many urban students have varied degrees of hidden artistic talent, yet rarely have the opportunity to harness their skills and depth of creativity. As a result, many are never able to realize their full potential and explore paths that expose them to ideals that may produce more positive outcomes. Chucks & Tux provides 5 Birmingham City students with the privilege of working with practitioners and experts from UAB s Art & Art History Department to learn the skills and techniques needed to bring their design to fruition. The finished, one-of-a-kind works of art will then be featured at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts for hundreds of visitors to see and revel in the wonderful gifts that our city s youngest residences possess. Concluding the week-long showcase period at AEIVA, the student masterpieces will be put on display and auctioned at the Chucks & Tux gala. The purpose of Chucks & Tux is to create a sustainable annual fundraising event that showcases work and the artistry of our city s students. Throughout the month of February, staff and partners will involve all 7 Birmingham City high schools in a student-centered marketing campaign inclusive of on-site live radio remotes, school-wide poster placement, in-class presentations, and more. The campaign will encourage students to visit Growing Kings website to download and print an outline of a Chuck Taylor Converse shoe to customize to their liking. Beginning on March 1, 2016, all interested students will have two weeks to submit their design via email or social media using the hashtag, #GKChucks. Growing Kings staff will then spend the next 3 days promoting all the entries on the organization s social media pages in order to accurately capture all the votes. The top 5 students who receive the most votes will be announced on March 18, 2016, and they will spend their spring break going through classroom sessions at UAB to learn the proper techniques and access the tools necessary to bring their paper shoe design to life utilizing actual Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers. Chucks & Tux utilizes the strengths of its partners to bring greater awareness to key stakeholders about our work and advocacy efforts in the field of male youth development. We value creating stronger communities of practice, and this event allows for greater promotion of systemic partnerships. With you as a partner in this project, we know that the significance of its impact will be boundless.
