MORROW COUNTY FAIR The Morrow County Sentinel 41013382 2 Wednesday, August 23, 2017

The Morrow County Sentinel MORROW COUNTY FAIR Wednesday, August 23, 2017 3 Brandon Strain welcomes visitors to the 2017 Morrow County Fair. The 167th Morrow County Fair is quickly approaching Stunt show, petting zoo among new attractions By Evelyn Long The Sentinel MOUNT GILEAD Brandon Strain, president of the Morrow County Fair Board, is extending an invitation to the 167th edition of the Morrow County Fair. It begins Aug. 28 and winds up on Labor Day, Sept. 4. The Morrow County Fair is one of the few remaining rural fairs in the state of Ohio, said Strain, a six-year member of the fair board, representing Cardington Township. He said a new show, The Northeast Ohio Dukes Stunt Show, will be presented at the grandstand on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. Other new attractions include the Valley Exotics Petting Zoo and the small stage will be the scene of musical entertainment, contests, and other events organized by 95.1 FM and The United Way. These programs are sponsored by Gompf Funeral Service and Monuments. The grandstand will be the site of vehicle contests and shows presented each day. Matinee harness racing will be run Monday and Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Strain, who has served as board president three years, said donations from an estate are funding improvements in the showers, rest rooms and kitchen area of the Show Arena. We re also placing new track lighting on the section coming out of turns three and four. This is being done so we can put security lights in for the walkway. Strain said the donating family and others will be honored as Outstanding Fair Supporters during a brief ceremony on Tuesday evening before the 6:30 pm king and queen crowning ceremony. Special Days will be Senior Citizens on Tuesday, Aug. 29, when those age 62 and above are admitted free from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Veterans Day, Sunday, Sept. 3, when veterans with proper military ID will be admitted free from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsors of the fair include Morrow County Commissioners, Discount Drug Mart, Blackstone Insurance Agency, Inc.; Ramco Rental, Inc., Touchstone Energy by Consolidated Electric, Burkhart Farm Center, Inc., Poet Bio Fuel Refining and Cardington Yutaka Technologies, Inc. Gate admission for persons over six years of age is $6. Season passes can be purchased at the fair office for $25. Youth Tickets for those 7-15 are $15; and junior fair exhibitors/advisors, $5. Children under six, parking and the grandstand are free. Pit passes on the infield at Gate B are $10, but will be limited for the show on Sunday evening. Otterbacher Amusements will be offering the midway rides. These rides are not included with any pass or daily admission and may be purchased from the amusements at the midway. Handicapped parking will be available near the Youth Arena and Gate B Courtesy Photo will be the entry for handicapped only. Other entries can be made from Gate C or the back gate. Referring to the popular camping area, Strain said it is almost full. The Junior Fair Youth Building has a variety of events scheduled, noted Julie Logan, junior fair coordinator. This building also offers 4-H booth and school displays. The fair s run will wind up on Labor Day with the Junior Fair Livestock Sale in the Show Arena and the annual Open Demolition Derby at the grandstand. The Morrow County Historical Society will once again host the log cabin open house throughout the fair. Working in the fair office are board secretary and treasurer, Mary Weiler, and Jean Staiger, Brittany Kruger and Morgan Gompf. Nate Newson is vice president of the fair board. Come on out and meet old friends and make new ones, said Strain. The fair has something for everyone in the family. More information can be found on the fair s web site: morrowcountyfair.org.

The Morrow County Sentinel MORROW COUNTY FAIR Wednesday, August 23, 2017 11 Key Ministries to kick off Morrow County Fair By Evelyn Long The Sentinel Key Ministries of Morrow County will conduct a Singspiration service on Sunday evening Aug. 27, to kick off the Morrow County Fair. The service will begin at 7 p.m. and will be conducted from the small stage with the Spangler Sisters/Country Travelers in charge. Because the fair will not be officially opened there will be no charge to enter the fairgrounds. Key Ministries will also host a tent during fair week and invites people to stop and visit. There will be fresh, cold water, crosses and face painting offered free at the tent. Visitors are invited to stop, rest and share fellowship. Food, fun await you at the fair By Anthony Conchel The Sentinel I love county fairs. And what s not to love about corn dogs, dozen of 4-H projects on display and of course, my big draw, harness racing. The Morrow County Fair, which opens Aug. 28 and ends Sept. 4, Anthony Conchel truly has something for everyone. Games, rides, food and more await us next week. I didn t grow up on a farm and never took part in a county fair. But I attended the Jefferson County Fair in eastern Ohio almost every summer as a kid. My aunt knew a prominent farming family near Smithfield and we would go on our annual trek into the country. I couldn t wait to escape the smell of the steel mills for that of fresh cattle and pig manure. Seriously. It didn t bother me then and now 50 years later it still doesn t offend my olfactory senses. Anyway, that is often overpowered by the smell of fried foods corn dogs, elephant ears and Twinkies. Yum. In fact the only thing that can ruin a county fair is bad weather, namely rain. I ve covered a few fairs in the north central Ohio region over the years and dodged many a raindrop. The other weather issue can be oppressive heat. I covered the Crawford County Fair several years ago and it was hot. I mean blazing hot every day, with temperatures in the 90s and humid. Yuck. It was just plain miserable. People were on the verge of passing out and several hogs died as a result of the heat. I d get there at 9 a.m. and by 9:30 I was soaked in sweat. Needless to say, I brought a change of clothing after the first day. Finally a nice downpour of rain hit on Thursday afternoon and cooled us all off. This year s edition of the Morrow County Fair has plenty of entertainment rough trucks, eating contests and a petting zoo for youngsters for you to enjoy. I ll be there about every day. Hope you are too. Just bring a comfortable pair of shoes to walk around the fairgrounds and maybe throw an umbrella in the car just for good measure.
