A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members, Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great summer and a great beginning to the fall semester. The Executive Board met this month and we are excited about the coming year and the fall program on Assessment Best Practices on November 7, 2014 at NY Institute of Technology. Please go to MNYCCPOA.org to register. Also, please mark your calendar for our Winter and Spring meetings on: Friday, January 23rd and Friday, May 1st respectively.

I also have news to share about a change to the Executive Board. Mary Ann Triest, our Historian has resigned from the Board due to her acceptance of a position and relocation to Marymount California University-overseeing their international student center. I would like to thank Mary Ann for her work on the Board as Secretary from 2011 to 2013, and the work she started as the Historian. I wish her the best! The Board will miss her positive energy and dedication. In accordance with our bylaws, Section 4.6-Vacancies, 1 the Board has voted to appoint her replacement, Diana Martinez who will finish Mary Ann s term as Historian. Diana had formerly served on the Board as the Program Director. Please join me in welcoming back and congratulating Diana! Last year the Board voted to change the membership year from June 1 to May 31 to September 1 to August 31. We decided to make this change in order to make it easier for members to renew in accordance with the school year as opposed to the fiscal year. In reviewing the MNYCCPOA bylaws, Article 2 Section 2.1 2 we determined that we need to have a membership vote on making this change official. In order to facilitate this vote we will be sending you a ballot via Survey Monkey this fall. Finally, I would like to announce that the Board has decided to increase the award amounts for the Alva C. Cooper awards for Best Practices in Career Development. The new amounts are $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. The submission deadline is January 16th. For more information, please visit our website. I encourage everyone to think about their innovative programming and to apply! I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting. Jennifer Miller, President MNYCCPOA 1 Whenever any vacancy occurs in the Board of Directors, it shall be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Board. The person so chosen shall hold office until the next biennial meeting or until a successor shall have been chosen at a special meeting of the members. 2 The annual dues shall be such amount as is determined by the Board of Directors. Dues shall be paid in advance for the period June 1 to May 31. New members shall pay the full dues for the fiscal year during which they are admitted at the time election to membership, except that new members joining in April or May shall have those dues satisfy.

WHAT'S TRENDING Conference Review by Mary Ann Triest 2014 Women s Leadership Conference: Lead and Succeed Saturday, September 20, 2014 Hosted by Mount St. Mary s College Los Angeles, California applicants (not just the winners). With this new feature, all applicants and recipients will have the opportunity to be recognized for their projects and get feedback from attendees. The Awards presentations will be scheduled for the morning portion of the program, rather than the afternoon. With this change, we hope to generate more interest in the award. Consider: Do we use different language to describe male versus female students when we write letters of recommendation? The Language of Leadership a presentation by Ms. Lori Nishiura Mackenzie, Executive Director of Stanford University s Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, included fascinating data on the role of language in shaping leadership roles for men and women. Part lecture and part hands-on workshop, Ms. Mackenzie effectively challenged our perception of the language we use to speak about ourselves, others, as well as how our bosses and peers may describe us as colleagues and professionals. Recommenders were found to use nurturing words to describe women, and leadership words to describe men. The purpose of these awards is to recognize the outstanding work of MNYCCPOA members, and to foster our mission of promoting professional growth and exchanging ideas, information and creative solutions regarding career development issues. All award checks will be made out to the member's school, to be used by the Career Services Office. In the event that the work was not related to work conducted at a school, i.e. a thesis, dissertation or graduate school project then the prize will be awarded directly to the winner. Only current, individual MNYCCPOA members will be eligible to apply for these awards. MNYCCPOA memberships are individual not institutional. The individual submitting an application must be a current member. Types of Submissions: The committee is seeking submissions related to the work done by career professionals, which can include: New programs or programs with a new twist Successful marketing campaigns for programs or services Innovative materials or handouts

Examples of nurturing words are team player, good relationship manager and committed whereas leadership words are big thinker, influences others, takes risks and independent. More often than not, the audience found that they fell into the large majority of those who unknowingly stereotype women and men into the language associated with traditional gender roles. This can especially be detrimental for women applying for leadership roles their bosses and peers think the world of their work, but may be hindering them by using nurturing words to describe their accomplishments and work ethic. Essentially, the language of leadership is the best way to advocate for ourselves and use our authority to advocate for others. The balance recommended is to start by using more of the language of leadership, and to end a written or spoken reference with nurturing language. Take a look at your professional bio, Linkedin profile and how you are introduced. We have the power to use the language of leadership to create a condition for our own success as well as for others. More information about Ms. Lori Nishiura Mackenzie and the Clayman Institute for Gender Research can be found here: http://gender.stanford.edu/ Ms. Mackenzie s session was one of many opportunities to learn and engage with a dynamic group of women ranging from high school age to retired women and alumni from many different professions at the sole women s college in the Los Angeles area.
