To: AAUP National Council Date: December 20, 2011 Subject: Nominating Committee Report Committee Business The members of the Nominating Committee are listed below. Charlie Baker was elected as Chair of the Committee following the Committee s constitution in June 2011. The Committee worked collaboratively to recruit and review candidates for the 2012 Council election with the goal of having at least two candidates for every position. Charles Baker, Chair, College of the Holy Cross Jeanette Jeneault, Syracuse University Judith Johnston, Rider University Jason Jones, Central Connecticut State University Charles Smith, The University of Michigan A Call for Nominations was published in the July August issue of Academe magazine, which was mailed to all members. In addition, multiple Call for Nominations emails were sent to all AAUP members beginning in September. The committee report, initially due in November, was pushed back to December 2011 by a vote of Council in order to facilitate the Committee s search for candidates to try to obtain at least two candidates for every position. The nominations extension and updated information was sent to all members and publicized on the AAUP website. Because in 2012 we are electing four National Officers, ten District Council members and three At-Large members, the Nominating Committee needed at least thirty-four candidates. It ended up with 49 candidates. In addition to listing who the candidates are in the various races, the Nominating Committee wishes to provide you with the following observations: I. Despite the Committee s best efforts to find another candidate for District 9, there was only one candidate nominated for that district. However, write-in nominations will be available on the electronic election ballot. II. In light of the Nominating Committee s experience we would like to work with the AAUP Election Committee to develop proposals for Council to review that are related to changing the nominations and elections processes of the Association. These proposals may require amending the AAUP Constitution. We believe that the above issues should be addressed at the June Meeting on the first day. We also believe the Nominating Committee itself should be elected on Friday so that it can meet before the end of the meeting.
