Message from the Commander Greetings, I cannot believe a year has gone by already. It has been busy but very enjoyable. It will be one of my favorite memories. CONTENTS Message from the Commander 1 Hints from Hince 2 Submission Guidelines 3 Do you have an article or announcement for The Legion Times? If so, please send all submissions to times@txlegion.org by the 20th of every month and it will appear in the following issue Last month I was able to attend the Legion Day at Boys State. I am amazed at the maturity of the boys this year. I was impressed with their sessions in the house and the senate chambers. This year was a treat because I was able to attend their talent show and their debates. It was an awesome day. The following week was the beginning of the Girls State program. I was invited to speak at their opening ceremonies. They had over 500 girls this year and it was quite impressive. Both programs are top notch and make me proud to be a Legionnaire and Auxiliary member. By the time this is posted our Department Convention will be over and we will have new officers. I wish them well and hope they enjoy their year as much as I have. July is American Legion Baseball time. The state tournament will be at the end of the month and is being held in Brenham. I hope we have a good turn out this year. Please take the time to attend some of the games in your area. We have some really talented athletes participating in this program and we need to show them our support. Although my year as Department Commander is over, I plan to keep active in the American Legion at the state level and look forward to seeing you at the various functions. For God and Country, Lynn

The Legion Times is published online 12 times a year by the American Legion, Department of Texas HINTS FROM HINCE If you missed Legion night at Boys State, you missed a great time and the 75th gathering was one for the books. The enthusiasm of our young Texans was at an all time high and the speakers blew everyone away. How often will these young men get to hear and be close to a Medal of Honor winner? The staff of Boys State once again outdid themselves and as a Legion member, all I can say to them is THANK YOU. We turned out yet another group of young citizens who truly understand FOR GOD AND COUNTRY. HINT FROM HINCE: Hope every Post who sent delegates also followed up with an article in their local paper, an invite back to the Post for the boy and his family and a note to all sponsors. Post elections should be over and done now and new blue books will be hitting the mail in the fall. These are key to good communication so please take the time to make sure the information is submitted to all layers of our organization. HINT FROM HINCE: Never throw away a blue book! They are invaluable as a list of our mentors and leaders! In addition, make sure you get an article in about the Post elections. The Legion is right up there with the Lions, the Rotary and the Elks with service and we need to show the colors and share our programs. See you all in Beaumont! God bless, Gerry Hince 979 778-1835 Hince57@msn.com 2
