The Chief Cardinal Gibbons High School January 2016 Living history retires at Cardinal Gibbons Sister Marie Schramko, 9, and Sister Janet Rieden, 1, retired in December from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale. Sister Marie was a founding principal of the girls division in 1961 and Sister Janet came to the school in 1963. They were the last remaining nuns at the school from the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate in Joliet, Ill., where they have returned. (Photo Credit: Munoz Photography) IMPORTANT JANUARY DATES Jan. 15 Regular School Day Jan. 1 Martin Luther King Jr. - No Classes Early Dismissal 1:00 pm Jan. 27 Junior Ring Ceremony (see pg.2) See calendar on page 5 for more important dates! Dear Cardinal Gibbons Family, On Wednesday, December 16, the Cardinal Gibbons Faculty and Staff celebrated with Sr. Marie and Sr. Janet their many years of selfless dedication to our school. It was a bitter sweet moment as I joined Msgr. Kelly, representing the archdiocese, and Sister Dolores, the President of the Order of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Mary Immaculate, in thanking these two wonderful women for all that they have done in molding the lives of young people and setting an example of servant leadership. On Thursday, December 17, our students lined the balconies and patio to wave to and salute Sr. Marie and Sr. Janet as they drove through the parking lot one last time on their way to the airport to begin their journey to retirement. A picture of St. Francis hangs in both Sr. Marie s office and Sr. Janet s classroom containing the following words: I have done what was mine to do. May Christ teach you what is yours. Both of these wonderful sisters have done what was theirs to do build a school and leave both a legacy and a blueprint for the rest of us to follow. In thanking Sr. Marie and Sr. Janet I told them that like the Little Drummer Boy of the Christmas song we have no material gifts that would be worthy of the gratitude we owe them. The gift we bring then is a pledge to continue to love our students, to teach our students, and to challenge our students to be the best Christian young men and women they are capable of becoming. As we begin the second semester we re-commit ourselves to our goal of educating the minds and hearts and souls of our students. This month we will begin a Feasibility Study as we look to the future development of our school. Next month we host a visiting committee from AdvancED as a part of our Accreditation process. In two weeks we will begin registering our newest Chiefs, the Class of 2020! There is always a whirlwind of activity on this campus and I thank the parents, teachers, coaches and staff for making this such a wonderful place to teach and learn. Warm regards, Paul D. Ott Paul D. Ott Principal Cardinal Gibbons High School - 2900 NE 47 th Street, FL 3330 - (954)491-2900 - www.cghsfl.org
