DR ERIC SWANSON Research Affiliate at MIT and Serial Entrepreneur USA Startups in Optics and Photonics The first part of this talk will be an introductory overview of generic entrepreneurship related issues for first time entrepreneurs and the second part of the talk will be focused on lessons learned from involvement in several biomedical optics and optical communications startups.

DR. FRANK LEVINSON General Partner Phoenix Venture Partners San Francisco Bay Area, USA A Founder s and Investor s View of Photonics Today Over the past nearly 50 years photonics has been driven by innovations needed for optical communications. Today we have exquisite control over light in the 1550 nm window. But further dramatic improvements there may be slowing down for reasons similar to the clear slowdown in Moore s law based silicon chips. That does not mean the photonics wave of innovation is slowing generally, indeed the opportunities to use photonics in sensing of all types from mobile devices to IoT is actually accelerating and there is room for many startups in these new areas.

SESSION IV: INDUSTRY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP 10:45am 12:15pm Room I: 4812 10:45am-11:15am 11:15am-11:45am 11:45am-12:15pm SESSION IV: Industry and Entrepreneurship Chair: Dr Songyang Li Photonics Technologies for Today and Tomorrow Kenneth Tai Chairman & CEO - Jasper Display Corp. (JDC) Hsinchu, Taiwan Risk Management in a Startup Dr Daniel Renner VP. Freedom Photonics LLC United States The Changing Landscape Of Photonics Commercialisation Prof. JOHN HARVEY Southern Photonics Ltd New Zealand

KENNETH TAI Chairman & CEO Jasper Display Corp. (JDC), Hsinchu, Taiwan Photonics Technologies for Today and Tomorrow Taiwan s capital-intensive and technology-intensive industry is its advantage. The best example is TSMC. It creates a very competitive industry chain. On the way to High-Tech High-Touch, many opportunities will raise inevitably. Light technology would be the key to grasp the opportunity. Just as the proclamation of the UN, Light-based technology is a major economic driver with potential to revolutionize the 21st century. At this moment, it is necessary to find out the self-position and confirm the development direction quickly. With multi-party cooperation, the cornerstone of the industry could be raised and the time length of technology development could be folded up. Therefore, it would have a chance to grasp the world level market. Besides, education and training must also act simultaneously. This can provide the industry adequate engineering and R&D people.

DR. DANIEL RENNER Vice-President of Business Development Freedom Photonics, Santa Barbara, CA Risk Management in a Startup High tech startups navigate a business ocean full of risk and opportunity, all the way from the time of their inception to the time of their success... or failure... Opportunity maximization and risk minimization are at the essence of a startup company operation. This presentation will focus on techniques for balancing risk and opportunity.

PROF. JOHN HARVEY Southern Photonics Ltd, New Zealand The Changing Landscape Of Photonics Commercialisation Twenty years ago, academics who branched out into commercialization were seen as radicals. Today these efforts are promoted in most developed countries, leading to new funding routes for such enterprises. This paper discusses some of the challenges of operating a small Photonics based business from "The Last Bus Stop on the Planet".

SESSION V: ACADEMIC ENTREPRENEURS 2.00pm 4:00pm Room I: 4812 2:00pm-2:30pm 2:30pm-3.00 pm 3.00pm-3.30pm 3.30pm-4.00pm SESSION V: Academic Entrepreneurs Chair: Moe Amanzadeh An Experience of Taking University Research In Photonics To Market Prof. Byoung kim Professor and Entrepreneur in Resident- KAIST Republic of Korea Photonic Entreprenuership in Europe Dr Hendrik Sabert Max Plank Institute for The science of Light- UltraLumina Germany Building a Photonics Device Company in the 21st Century Prof John Marsh Professor of Optoelectronic Systems & Entrepreneur University of Glasgow, UK Intellectual Property Management: Unlock the Value of your Innovation Dr. Terence Goh Intellectual Property Management Consultant IP ValueLab, Singapore

PROF. BYOUNG KIM Professor and Entrepreneur in Resident Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea An Experience Of Taking University Research In Photonics To Market This presentation describes the process of taking research results to commercial market in photonics industry based on the personal experience. Some key factors that influenced the outcome of the endeavor will be discussed. Current technology commercialization activities at KAIST will also be mentioned.

DR HENDRIK SABERT Max Plank Institute for The Science of Light (UltraLumina) Germany Landscape and Future of Photonic Entrepreneurship in Europe Photonics has been identified by the European Union as one of six Key Enabling Technologies (KET) and is seen as a priority underpinning technological competitiveness and prosperity. The presentation will reflect on the landscape of start-ups in Europe, emerging opportunities and how to get started.

PROF JOHN MARSH Professor of Optoelectronic Systems & Entrepreneur University of Glasgow, UK Building a Photonics Device Company in the 21st Century The photonics device industry was particularly badly hit in the years following the burst of the 2000 technology bubble, and has only now recovered to a point where major players are profitable. Fabrication-based start-ups are particularly vulnerable, as clean rooms need to run close to capacity to be viable. The presentation will reflect on the characteristics of three successful start-ups from the University of Glasgow in photonics, and consider how lessons can be applied to current market conditions.

TERENCE GOH Intellectual Property Management Consultant IP ValueLab, Singapore Intellectual Property Management: Unlock the Value of your Innovation Innovation generates intangible assets, which are today's drivers of a company's value.
