As we begin a new semester, I would like to thank you all for your hard work and dedication to our institution, especially the folks who spent time working over the break to prepare us for the spring. The fall brought great student successes, gains in the development foundation, added employee options, and much needed facility upgrades. However, we will not settle on those victories alone. We have much work to do and many battles to fight, but I am confident in the abilities of our faculty and staff members to lead our efforts toward continued success for the students we serve with Viking Pride. This semester brings new exciting changes to commencement activities, Viking athletics, homecoming, development of the alumni association, and academic programming. Stay tuned and hold on for an exhilarating ride on the ship! It is time to do great things. President Jay Falkner

Carl Albert State College Presents: All-Black Towns of Oklahoma Shortly after the 1889 Land Run opened the Oklahoma Territory to settlement, black leaders hoped to make the newly-opened lands a home for oppressed African Americans throughout the United States. Oklahoma was promoted as the land where African Americans could come for the dream of self-government. As many as fifty communities arose where only African Americans lived and governed themselves. Even though "Jim Crow" became the law of the land after statehood, All-Black towns survived and continue to thrive in modern Oklahoma. Enjoy the libraries 12 banners displaying the unique history of All-Black towns in Oklahoma. Exhibit dates are as followed: January 16 February 10th: Joe E. CASC SSS Club would like to thank everyone that helped to make our 3rd year of Adopt-A-CASC Angel project a success. We couldn t have done it without the support of our CASC family (faculty, staff, and students). With your help we provided for 9 families with a total of 16 children. The Adopt-A-CASC Angel program was established by SSS Club to provide a gift to the children (ages 0-17) of Carl Albert State College parents currently enrolled full time (at least 12hrs) in Fall classes. This program is for low income parents that may not be able to provide Christmas gifts for their child/children. President: Lauren Hughes, Vice-President: Kyle Elliott, Secretary: Kerstein Hall, Treasurer: Halie Battiest Sponsor: Kim Price My name is Micky Solomon. I m a success coach with NASNTI, a CASC federal grant program designed to improve the retention and graduation rates of Native American students. My goal is to help students succeed by empowering them to navigate around obstacles that have been proven to be leading factors in college students failing to graduate. Success coaching helps with academics, time management, and overall support for students attending CASC. Students who have received coaching have improved test scores and found college more manageable. It is easy to be very passionate about success coaching because it helps students open the door to opportunities that would not have existed without a degree! After eighteen years, I made the decision to return to college in order to advance my career. My educational background includes an Associate Degree in Business Administration from CASC. I also hold a Bachelor s in Organizational Leadership from Rogers State University, and in the process of completing a Masters of Management. I am very thankful for the opportunity to help students of all ages succeed in college because I know from experience the difference it makes in their lives. So, if you re a current or prospective CASC student contact me and be prepared for success. You can contact Micky at mdsolomon@carlalbert.edu or go see her on the third floor of the Ollie building.
It took 15 years to create the federal Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. It was first introduced to legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968. After the bill became stalled, petitions endorsing the holiday containing six million names were submitted to Congress. Public pressure for the holiday mounted during the 1982 and 1983 civil rights marches in Washington. Congress passed the holiday legislation in 1983, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. A compromise moving the holiday from Jan. 15, King's birthday, which was considered too close to Christmas and New Year's, to the third Monday in January helped overcome opposition to the law. The federal legislation challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen action volunteer service in honor of King. In honor of MLK, hundreds of Volunteer Centers, and volunteers across the country donate their time to make a difference on this day.
