International Nieman Fellowship Application We welcome your interest in applying for an International Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University for the 2014-2015 academic year. Please note that the deadline for International Fellowships is December 1, 2013. Before you fill out the form on pages 5, 6, 7 and 8, please make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements listed below. Also read the application information on our Web site (http://www.nieman.harvard.edu); it explains the fellowships in more detail. If you have questions that aren t answered by this application or on the Web site, please contact us by e-mail at nieman_applications@harvard.edu WHAT IS A NIEMAN FELLOWSHIP? Nieman Fellowships provide U.S. and international journalists with an opportunity to study for an academic year at Harvard, to step back from deadlines, renew their intellectual curiosity and enrich their understanding of the topics they cover. Fellows take part in many journalism-oriented seminars, workshops and conferences, and benefit from the opportunity to spend a year with reporters and editors from around the world. Please note: Harvard does not have a journalism school and Nieman Fellows do not receive academic credit or degrees for their work. The fellowships also do not offer journalism training or work experience. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP? Candidates nominate themselves by submitting an application and supporting materials. There is no age limit and no educational prerequisite for a Nieman Fellowship. You must be a citizen of a country other than the United States (including journalists with non-u.s. citizenship who work in the United States or for a U.S. media company). You must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English. You must have five years of full-time or freelance professional journalism experience. Your professional experience must be with the news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio or television stations or networks, online publications or magazines of general public interest. Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers are also eligible to apply. We will not consider candidates in public relations or in organizations that do not produce general-interest news. Your employer may give you a leave of absence for the academic year (10 months). Within the past two years, you cannot have participated in a fellowship or leave of absence from your work that lasted four months or longer. INTERNATIONAL NIEMAN FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION PAGE 1

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS? All your application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be sent to the Nieman Foundation at the address on the bottom of this page and must be postmarked on or before Dec. 1, 2013. When you send your materials, consider the length of time it takes mail from your country to reach the U.S. If any of the information related to your application changes after you have submitted it, please notify us immediately by e-mail at nieman_applications@harvard.edu WHAT MUST MY APPLICATION INCLUDE? Pages 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this application form, completed, dated and signed Work samples as described on page 3 of this application Two essays: One personal statement of 1,000 words or less that describes your journalistic experience and career plans and aspirations One proposal for study at Harvard of 500 words or less that discusses your proposed subjects or fields of study These essays are very important parts of your application. We carefully evaluate them to understand your accomplishments and your potential. We are particularly interested in examples and details that show you have a significant capacity for growth and leadership. We also want to know specifically how a year at Harvard will help make you a better journalist. We also require four confidential letters of recommendation, written in English: Two from people familiar with your work who can comment on your journalistic abilities and potential One from your organization s publisher, editor, manager or director supporting your application and granting you a nine-month leave of absence if you receive a fellowship One from your immediate supervisor commenting on your qualifications Freelance journalists should have four people familiar with their work write letters. Please ask the people who write your letters to tell us specifically how your abilities and experience make you an outstanding candidate for a Nieman Fellowship. Tell the people who recommend you to mail one copy of their letter directly to the Nieman Foundation at the address below in time to receive a postmark on or before Dec. 1, 2013. WHAT WORK SAMPLES SHOULD I SEND WITH MY APPLICATION? Send samples one copy of each that best illustrate your interests and abilities. Your samples must have been published or aired between Dec. 1, 2012, and Dec. 1, 2013. You may submit one sample from before Dec. 1, 2012, as a substitute for one required sample. If you routinely work in more than one medium, you may submit samples from each as long as you follow the guidelines below. If your work samples are not in English, please include a summary of their contents in English. Your supporting statements and synopses must also be in English. All printed samples, summaries and synopses must be formatted to fit 8½ x 11 (21.5 x 28 centimeters) sheets of paper. Write your name in the upper right corner of every item you submit (or on the backs of photographs). Do not send complete newspapers or magazines, books, scrapbooks, unpublished manuscripts, works-in-progress, irreplaceable material, elaborate presentations (for example, spiral bindings or report covers) or creative displays such as video presentations of still photographs. We will not accept work that does not meet these criteria. Please clearly date all your samples and do not send more than the requested number. We cannot return any submitted material, so make copies of everything you send. Broadcast Journalists (Note: Submit audiotapes, DVDs or CDs to support your application.) Radio and Television: Submit a written synopsis in English of five stories that are representative of your work with a brief description of your involvement with each story; for example, producing and editing. Documentary: Submit a written synopsis in English of your work samples and a brief description in English of your involvement with the works; for example, writing the screenplay and directing. Your samples must have been broadcast or shown in a public venue within the past two years. Print Journalists Writers: Submit five samples of published work. (Each byline counts as one sample.) If you send stories from a series, include a brief outline of the other stories in the series. Editors: Submit a statement in English describing your job. (This is in addition to your two essays.) You may include copies of published work along with a description of your role in these samples. For published work, follow the instructions for writers. Photographers: Submit a portfolio with eight samples of your work: original prints, tear sheets or a combination of both. Photographs must be 8 x 10 (20.5 x 25.5 centimeters) and may be black and white or color. Do not mount your photos. Online Journalists: Submit samples equivalent to five print articles or 30 minutes of programming, along with a statement in English describing your job, your involvement with each sample and whether each was created for the Web or adapted from another media format. (Your statement is in addition to your two essays.) Your samples must be journalistic in nature and demonstrate that your job involves news gathering, writing, editing or producing. WHAT ARE THE FUNDING OPTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS? Funds from the original Nieman bequest are restricted to U.S. citizens, so international candidates must find their own financial support. Some use personal funds. Other options are described below. We anticipate making a decision about the 2015 International Fellows in mid- February, 2014. Successful candidates will be able to tell their sources of funding about their appointment soon after this date. The cost to fund an international Nieman Fellow for the academic year at Harvard (mid-august to early June) is approximately $63,000: a $60,000 stipend (for living expenses, international travel and health insurance) and a $3,000 Nieman fee. We encourage you to apply for a Nieman Fellowship if you are qualified, even if you have not received full funding by the time you apply. If you are invited to be a Nieman Fellow, the Nieman Foundation will work with you to obtain the money you need. Financial Support from Your Own Funding Sources Many candidates for international Nieman Fellowships work with foundations and journalism organizations in their country or region. These potential funding sources can include agencies that support fellowships and your employer. The cultural affairs office of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate can provide information on exchange programs for which you might be eligible. Each organization that agrees to provide financial support for you as a Nieman Fellow must send a letter directly to the Nieman Foundation stating the amount of funding you would receive if you are awarded a fellowship. The organizations must mail the letter to the foundation at the address below in time to receive a postmark on or before Dec. 1, 2013. Class of 2015 International Fellowship Application Nieman Foundation One Francis Avenue Cambridge MA 02138-2009 U.S.A. Financial Support from Grants the Nieman Foundation Administers From time to time, institutions outside Harvard University give the Nieman Foundation grants for full or partial support of international journalists. The foundation awards these grants, some of which are reserved for citizens of specific countries. If you are selected as a Nieman Fellow and receive one of these grants, your stipend and fee may be subject to U.S. taxes of nearly 20%. Journalists from any Asian country except Japan will automatically be considered for a Chiba-Nieman Fellowship, supported by the Atsuko Chiba Fund and established in memory of Atsuko Chiba, a 1968 Nieman Fellow.
