Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, analysis of DNA from victims in northern and southern Europe indicates that the pathogen responsible was the yesinia pestis bacterium. The plague created a series of religious, social and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history. The war pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France, with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries of Great Britain and France, as well as by Native American allies. Fighting took place primarily along the frontiers between New France and the British colonies, from Virginia in the south to Newfoundland in the north. The dispute erupted into violence during which Virginia militiamen under the command of 22-year-old George Washington ambushed a French patrol. 2017 SUMMER BROCHURE Page 60 History: Seven Years War The Seven Years War was a war fought between 1754 and 1763. The main conflict occurring in the seven-year period from 1756 to 1763 involved every European great power of the time except the Ottoman Empire, spanning five continents, and affecting Europe, the Americas, West Africa, India, and the Philippines. The conflict split Europe into two coalitions, led by the Kingdom of Great Britain on one side and the Kingdom of France on the other. For the first time, aiming to curtail Britain s and Prussia s ever-growing might, France formed a grand coalition of its own. This, however, ended in failure when the Anglo-Prussian coalition prevailed. Britain s rise as the world s predominant power destroyed France s supremacy in Europe, altering the European balance of power. Starvation, disease, malnutrition and exposure killed more than 2,500 American soldiers by the end of February 1778. General George Washington sought quarters for his men with winter almost setting in, and with greatly diminishing prospects for campaigning. Washington and his troops had fought in early December what was the last major engagement of 1777. He devised to pull his troops from their present encampment in the White Marsh area (now Fort Washington State Park) and move to a more secure location for the coming winter at Valley Forge.
