Dece m be r, 2 01 2 V o l u me 1, Is su e 1 2012 ANNUAL UPDATE OTA Education Foundation, Inc., 555 Dixon Road, Toronto, Ontario M9W 1H8 www.ontruck.org/educationfoundation education.foundation@ontruck.org ( 416)-249-7401, Ext. 243 A Message from the Chairman I recently came across an article in the Globe and Mail s Report on Business section that, as a longtime supporter of the OTA Education Foundation s scholarship program, I found to be uncannily familiar. Entitled scholarships for kids matter to employees *, the article notes that more than 20 companies on the 2012 list of GTA Top Employers are now offering scholarships for workers children as firms become increasingly aware of what matters to employees. What a great idea. The Foundation s scholarship program is unique in that it offers financial assistance exclusively to students of parents who work in trucking. In addition, through the application process, students are encouraged to learn more about the industry and its many career opportunities. Another benefit to employers: the Foundation even provides assistance to companies to help them promote Foundation scholarships to their workers. While we are seeing an increase in the number of trucking and related companies that sponsor Foundation scholarship applications, it seems that the vast majority of companies are unaware that this industry-wide benefit program even exists. The beauty of it, of course, is that aside from promoting the scholarship opportunities to workers and sending in a donation each year, there is very little administration required on behalf of the companies whose employees benefit from the program. It s like having an employee benefit, for which there are very little financial or administrative resources required. * November 19, 2012 (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-onbusiness/careers/top-employers/scholarships-for-kids-matter-toemployees/article5432488/) Outstanding First Year Students receive Scholarships... 2 Supporters Tee Off for Foundation... 3 2012 Scholarship Winners... 3 2012 Endowed Scholarship Winners... 4 2012 Contributors... 5 Our Board of Directors... 5 Make a Donation... 6 More and more, financial assistance for postsecondary education is becoming important to both parents and students. According to Canada Census data, Ontario tuition fees have increased by 27% since 2008, which equates to more than 6% annually. Students who receive Foundation scholarships are children of truck drivers and owner-operators, dispatchers, maintenance personnel, as well as freight claims, sales, and other administrative staff. Given the economic downturn that started in 2008, salaries and wages have not kept pace with the rate of tuition and related fees. Since 2008, the Foundation has handed out $215,000 in scholarships, most of which have been funded by donations from industry. However, 2012 was a disappointing year. The Foundation received 52 scholarship applications that were sponsored by 32 companies. Due to a shortfall in donations, we were only able to hand out 13 scholarships. As a result, many students with strong academic performances, several with average grades approaching 90%, did not receive scholarships. We are hoping that in 2013, the industry will start to view the Foundation as its own self-administered scholarship program for workers, and that the donations will increase significantly to ensure that nearly all deserving applicants receive scholarships. Each year, the Foundation s Selection Committee has a difficult task of awarding supplementary scholarships to exceptionally high achieving students. While the J.O. Goodman and C.V. Hoar scholarships have been

December, 2012 OTA Education Foundation Annual Update Page 2 around for some time, the Bud Barr Scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2012. Congratulations are extended to the three winners, along with the companies that sponsored their applications. Also in 2012, the Foundation awarded its full slate of 10 Endowed Scholarships. These scholarships are funded in perpetuity by endowments from individual organizations, and are managed by the Foundation. All scholarship winners are listed in this update. I would like to extend a welcome to Stephen Laskowski, OTA s senior vice-president, who is the newest member of the Foundation s board of directors. This brings the board roster to its full complement of 9 members, all of whom are part of the Ontario trucking industry. The Foundation is excited about the upcoming launch of its new website scheduled for early 2013. In addition to hosting scholarship applications and listing our many scholarship winners, the new website will allow us to accept on-line donations securely. Our many scholarship applicants are enrolled in a broad range of programs from engineering, sociology, nutrition, and bio-medical sciences to public relations, accounting, education and music. I feel proud that many of these successful individuals will be able to thank Ontario s trucking industry for providing a little help along the way. On behalf of our directors and our scholarship winners, I would like to thank all of you who have helped us make a difference through your donations. I hope that we can continue to count on the support of Ontario s trucking industry in 2013. Scott Smith Chairman, OTA Education Foundation Outstanding First-Year Students Recognized for Achievements The OTA Education Foundation awarded three exceptional first-year university and college students with supplementary scholarships to recognize their outstanding achievements. The scholarship applicants are assessed on their high school academic achievement, service to community and volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, as well as an essay that answers a question on trucking. Bud Barr Scholarship The inaugural, which was announced at OTA s 2011 convention, was awarded to Katrina Frausel, as resident of Welland who is studying for a Bachelor of Sociology degree at the University of Victoria. Katrina plans to attain her Masters and PhD in Sociology and wants to inspire future leaders to promote change. Her application was sponsored by of Grimsby, where Katarina s father has worked as a dispatcher for 11 years. The Bud Barr Scholarship is named for Bud Barr, who served as the Foundation s Executive Director from 1992 to 2005, following his retirement from a long career in the Ontario trucking industry. The scholarship honours the memory of Bud Barr, who passed away in 2009. The J. O. Goodman Scholarship The was awarded to Lauren Stacey, a resident of Haileybury who is attending Queen s University with the goal of attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Global Development Studies and a minor in English. Lauren hopes to gain a position at Me to We as a leadership facilitator. Her application was sponsored by of New Liskeard, where her father is employed as a truck driver. The J.O. Goodman Scholarship is named for Joe Goodman, who for 44 years was Senior Staff Executive of the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA). He served as the Foundation s Executive Director from its beginning in 1958 until 1978. The C. V. Hoar Scholarship The was awarded to Patricia Bailey, a resident of Gore Bay who is studying Community and Justice Services at Cambrian College in Sudbury. Patricia s long-term goal is to establish a sports camp for children with behavioural problems. Her application was sponsored by

Page 3 OTA Education Foundation Annual Update December, 2012 of Gore Bay, where her mother is employed as a claims analyst. The C. V. Hoar Scholarship is named for Charles Hoar, who is one of the founding members of the OTA Education Foundation and who led the Foundation into its current form when he helped establish the J.O. Goodman Awards in 1979. All three scholarship recipients were chosen by the Foundation s Selection Committee, and are selected each year from all qualifying scholarship applications from students who are entering their first year of postsecondary studies at recognized universities or colleges. The scholarships are funded from donations which come primarily from trucking and allied trades companies. Supporters Tee Off for Foundation Two industry golf events chose to direct tournament proceeds to the OTA Education Foundation in 2012. For the fourth year in a row, the Foundation was selected to be the official charity of the David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. The annual event, which is organized by David s widow Debbie and other family members, serves as a tribute to the late David Virgoe, a truck driver who lost his life after taking evasive action to avoid oncoming traffic caused by street racers on Highway 400 in 2007. Once again, Cummins Eastern Canada Beat Mike Golf Challenge also directed proceeds to the Foundation. At the company s annual tournament, all players challenge president Mike Christodoulou on a designated par-3 hole. Any player with a tee shot that is closer to the hole than Mike s wins $25. Cummins then doubles the amount won during the day and donates it to the Education Foundation. All proceeds from these industry-sponsored events are used to fund the Foundation s annual scholarship program and are appreciated by the Foundation s many scholarship winners. 2012 Scholarship Winners University Scholarships The following students each received an OTA Education Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 for 2012.
