WELCOME! Summer School 2018 Summer School in the Stevens Point Area Public School District offers students a variety of exciting opportunities. Summer School courses in the Stevens Point Area Public School District are available to students who have completed grades 4K 12. Summer courses are an extension of the current school year. Students register for summer courses based on the grade completed during the 2017-2018 school year. We are looking forward to seeing you this summer! REGISTRATION & PAYMENTS GENERAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Registration will only be accepted online. Late registrations may be accepted if additional space remains. Students should be registered for summer school courses based on the grade they are currently enrolled in. Registrations will not be accepted by telephone. If you do not have internet access, you may register your student at your students school or at the Bliss Educational Services Office, 1900 Polk Street, Stevens Point, WI 54481. Online Registration will be available through Skyward Family Access for those students currently attending the Stevens Point Area Public School District. All late registrations must be completed in person at Bliss Educational Services Center, 1900 Polk Street, Stevens Point, WI 54481. REFUNDS: Full refund of material fees will be available until Monday, June 11. After June 11, no material fees will be refunded. CLASS CANCELLATIONS: A course may be cancelled if there is insufficient enrollment. ELIGIBILITY: Any student whose legal residence is within the boundaries of the Stevens Point Area Public School District or are open enrolled during the 2017-2018 school year may enroll in the Stevens Point Area Summer School Program. Students whose legal residence is outside of the boundaries of the Stevens Point Area may enroll in the Stevens Point Area Summer School Program for a fee of $125 per summer school course. PROCEDURES TRANSPORTATION (BUSING) Students in grades 4K - 8 are eligible to receive District transportation (busing) to and from summer school at Jefferson, Kennedy, Madison, McKinley, Ben Franklin and P.J. Jacobs. In order for students in grades 4K-2 nd to receive district transportation, the pick-up and drop-off address must be within the summer school attendance area boundary. Jacobs Junior High Pool or SPASH Pool Please Note: students must be 5-years-old on or before the first day of the swim session they wish to participate in. SUMMER SWIM ASSESSMENTS FOR PASSING LEVELS L2 Beginner class (Pike, Eel, Ray, Starfish, Pre Polliwog, Polliwog, Guppy) : there are 3 levels to the Beginning Class and the student must pass all 3 levels before advancing to Advance Beginner L3. Child needs to swim the length (25 YARDS) of the pool doing the front crawl with rhythmical breathing and the length of the pool doing the back crawl. B1 : student cannot do front or back float without help B2 : student can do front and back float by themselves and know the basic concept of rhythmic breathing B3 : student can do front and back float by themselves, rhythmic breathing is improved, and have the basic concept of front and back crawl gaining strength to do it for the width of the pool (25 yards). L3 Advance Beginner class (Minnow) : student needs to swim the length of the pool doing the elementary backstroke and with a greatly improved front and back crawl. L4 Intermediate class (Fish) : students need to swim two lengths of the pool doing front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and 15 yards of the butterfly. L5 Swimmer class (Flying Fish) : students will increase endurance of the latter and will probably be doing 75 yards of their strokes and will have a coordinated butterfly for 25 yards. L6 Advance Swimmer class: students will do 100 yards of the following strokes: back, breast, right and left side with inverted scissor kicks, front crawl, over arm side stroke and trudgen crawl. This class also includes extensive training of treading water, survival swimming and inflating clothing for flotation. L7 Guard Start: extensive student training will include the following: recovery of submerged victim, escapes, water entries, rescues, sudden immersion skills, spinal injury management, breathing emergencies, approach strokes, mask, fins and snorkel. This program continues to build on the skills covered in 4K and prepares students for kindergarten. Teachers will establish a structured and nurturing environment for young children. Children will be involved in many hands-on activities integrating art, music and physical activities. This program is open to all students who are in Kindergarten now. This program incorporates reading and math skills into a balanced enrichment program encouraging students to function in their everyday lives by solving problems, acting as responsible citizens and helping friends and neighbors. Students will gain awareness and skills of what it means to help others in their immediate surroundings. Books & Cooks/ Team Sports 1-2 Jefferson Madison Fee: $10.00 McKinley June 11 - July 19 This class will alternate every other week between Books & Cooks and Team Sports. Books & Cooks will focus on literature with cooking and nutrition. Team Sports will focus on various fundamental skills involved in sports. Early Learners Fee: $10.00 Pre-K - K Madison June 11 - July 19 The Early Learners program is an opportunity for young children with documented cognitive, communication, behavioral, physical, sensory system, and/or other developmental delays to participate in an environment focused on learning through play. The development of pre-academic skills is emphasized. Classroom teachers are supported by educational assistants in this program. ESL Balanced Literacy Fee: $10.00 4K - 2 McKinley June 11 - July 19 English Language Learners in grades 4K-2 nd will explore McKinley s "Giving Garden." Students will discover a new aspect of our garden in a six week study which integrates science, math, and language arts standards. English Language Development goals will be tied to the following weekly themes: Week One: How does a Garden Grow? Week Two: How does the growth of a garden depend on weather, seasons, climate, and the water cycle? Week Three: How many species of animals connect to the garden in a food chain? Week Four: What are the benefits of eating vegetables from the garden? Week Five: What kind of gardens grow around the world? Week Six: How can the produce in a garden be harvested and shared? Outdoor Adventures will allow students to get connected with the great outdoors through adventures in geocaching, outdoor navigation, topography map skills, mammal tracking, wildlife phenology, animal behavior, macroinvertebrate sampling, and more to culminate in an outdoor navigation competition. Team Sports will focus on various fundamental skills involved in sports. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) will focus on hands-on science and literacy. Social Skills Fee: $10.00 1-2 Jefferson June 11 - July 19 The Social Skills program is an opportunity for students with documented emotional or behavioral needs to participate in an environment that is focused on social and behavioral skill development. Children enrolled in this course participate with same-age peers in the enrichment sections of summer school to the greatest extent appropriate or possible for skill building and authentic practice. Positive behavioral supports are provided through the classroom teacher and educational assistants and may include behavior modification strategies, sensory breaks, and direct instruction in social interactions among other intervention strategies. Bits and Bytes Camp 3-6 Ben Franklin June 11 - June 14 *one week camp Spark your excitement for technology specially designed for inspiring innovators, this program offers fun, kid-friendly courses in coding, video game design, web design, robotics, engineering and more. It's never too early to dream BIG! In this course, you will learn through guided play in an exploratory and encouraging lab environment. We emphasize creativity, with a focus on discovery and fun. This camp gives young students a taste of the endless possibilities of technology. Creative Art Current Grade: 3-6 Ben Franklin Session 1: June 11-28 Session 2: July 2-19 This program will focus on providing students with an opportunity to develop their artistic abilities. Activities will include painting, drawing and sculpting. English Review Fee: $10.00 5-6 Ben Franklin June 11 - July 19 This program is designed for students who have academic needs in the areas of English/Language Arts and is intended only for those students who did not pass their English/Language Arts class during the current school year. This program provides an opportunity for students to attain needed skills for the next grade level. Teacher recommendation is required to enroll in this class. this course ESL Jumpstart Fee: $10.00 5-6 Ben Franklin June 11 - July 19 ESL Jumpstart will provide an engaging, hands-on experience for English Language Learners. The course will focus on academic skills, language, and vocabulary in the core content areas. English Language Learners in grades 5-6 will get a jump start on skills and language they will need in junior high in a relaxed, language-rich environment. this course ESL Balanced Literacy Fee: $10.00 3-4 Ben Franklin June 11 - July 19 Available for English Language Learners. Students will have a chance to participate in an English Language Development program that offers participants hands-on environmental education and literacy exploration with activities tied to our school s Giving Garden. Exploring Culture Through Geography 5-6 Fee: $10.00 Ben Franklin June 11 - July 19 This class will use Google Earth to explore remote locations and study diverse cultures adept at living in those locations. In addition to Google Earth we would visit sites like National Geographic and Discovery Kids to explore. We may decide to go visit interesting local geographic locations such as glacially impacted landscapes. We call this Google Earth field trips French Language & Culture 5-6 Ben Franklin Session 1: June 11-28 The foreign language program will focus on providing students with opportunities to explore the French language and culture of French speaking countries. Fun with FACS 5-6 Ben Franklin Session 1: June 11-28 Session 2: July 2-19 Are you ready for some fun, food & relaxation? Then this class is for you! Expect to engage in a variety of team-building activities that will make you laugh and will strengthen your social skills. In addition, travel the world through your taste buds. Learn about different countries and make simple meals that reflect those cultures. With all this excitement you may be looking for a little rest and relaxation. The high level of activity assures the student of improvement in both physical condition and skill level. This program consists of running, weight lifting and various team and individual lifetime sport activities with possible field trips for golfing, canoeing/kayaking, rock climbing, archery and bowling. Mind-Up: Growth Mindset 3-4 (session 1) 5-6 (session 2) Ben Franklin Session 1: June 11-28 Session 2: July 2-19 This research-based curriculum features lessons that use the latest information about the brain to dramatically improve behavior and learning for all students. Each lesson offers easy strategies for helping students focus their attention, improve their self-regulation skills, build resilience to stress, and develop a positive mind-set in both school and life. River Studies Camp Beginners Fee: $10.00 5-6 Ben Franklin June 18-28 *two week camp Learn the basics of fishing, study different fish species and local waterways, and participate in walking field trips and bus trips to fish during this 2 week course. Students will also learn about fishing laws and be instructed in water safety while fishing. Poles are available for those who need them. Activities include group problem solving, leadership, camping skills, outdoor cooking, fishing, foraging, nature art and crafting, wilderness skills, outdoor safety, plant and animal identification and an introduction to our area s public parks, trails and waterways. This course deals mainly with Euclidean, or plane, geometry but is integrated with solid geometry and coordinate analytic geometry. A good background in algebra is essential for successful work in geometry. This course is a prerequisite for entrance into most 4-year colleges. Topics to be explored include writing to explain, business writing, classification, research and report writing, sentence composition, journal writing, description and narration. After a student completes an initial pre-assessment, a specific learning plan is designed for the student. Students work at an appropriate pace as determined by their individualized learning plan. Digital Photography Original Credit 9-12 Fee: $10.00 Period 2: 10:15-12:45 Mon - Fri Students electing to take this class will be provided the opportunity to learn about the capabilities, settings, and use of digital cameras. Students will learn proper picture taking techniques and photo enhancing manipulation skills with programs such as iphoto and Adobe Photoshop. Students will also learn the proper way to print and display pictures. Basic iphone and Android camera and photo apps will be covered during the course, along with different methods for transferring photos from a camera to a laptop and the Internet.
