A. THE CRAKE FOUNDATION: HISTORY AND STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The J.E.A. Crake Foundation Inc. is a private charitable foundation n which has as a primary goal the provision of support for those engaged in study, teaching and scholarship in the Humanities particularly but not exclusively, at Mount Allison University. Assistance is also given to the Anglican Church and to the type of local charities and institutions which Dr. Crake supported during his lifetime. Dr. John Ernest Alexander Crake was Professor of Classics at Mount Allison University from 1946 to 1976. Seven years before his death in 1983 he founded the Crake Institute which began a program of support for projects which reflected his concern for the Humanities (particularly Classics), scholarship, Mount Allison and the Anglican Church. The Crake Foundation continues and builds upon the work undertaken by the Institute. Dr. Crake was born in Toronto in 1911, and attended university there, Oxford and Johns (Photo from The Allisonian, 1972) Hopkins. He taught at Dartmouth College and at Trinity College School where he served as a cadet training officer until taking up a commission as a lieutenant with the Lorne Scots Regiment. He spent some months training recruits and then went overseas to London, where he was with the historical section in London, from 1942 until 1946. Following the war he joined the faculty of Mount Allison as Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department, serving in this capacity for the next thirty years. Dr. Crake taught Latin, Greek and Roman History, and served as a faculty member on the Board of Regents and as Secretary of Senate. He was a valued member and president of the Classical Association of Canada, and a member of the editorial committee of its journal, Phoenix. He was a faithful member of St. Paul s Anglican Church, Sackville, where he served for many years as Warden, Treasurer and Lay Reader. Address: J.E.A. B. GENERAL GUIDELINES: J.E.A CRAKE MOUNT ALLISON GRANTS 1. The J.E.A. Crake Foundation provides funding for projects which enhance study, teaching and scholarship in the Humanities, which the Foundation understands to be the following: Canadian Studies, Classics, Drama, English, Fine Arts, History, Modern Languages, and Literatures, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. 2. Ongoing Foundation projects are administered through established University Committees or through collegial departmental processes. Exceptions are: XV (Sawdon Award), XVI (Arts Internships), XVII (Teaching Awards) and XIX (PA Concert) which are administered by committees set up expressly for the purpose. The Scholarships and TRHS Awards (I and II ) and Bursaries (XX,XXI) are administered by the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor. 3. One-time grants (XVIII Crake Humanities Projects) are administered by the Dean of Arts who will inform holders of their administrative and fiscal responsibilities. (See information sheet for XVIII Crakej Humanities Project Funding). 4. Funding is for projects which clearly serve as enrichment and not for those projects which the Foundation understands to be the normal responsibility of the University. 5. Proposals should include a clear statement of the anticipated participation of, and benefit to students, a description of the project, and a budget which includes information on other grants applied for and/or received. 6. The Foundation does not contribute to endowments or other on-going funds. 7. Funding for faculty research and creative activity will be considered only in the context of the already established J.E.A.Crake Faculty Awards for Creative and/or Research Projects administered by the Senate Committee on Research and Creative Activity. 8. It is expected that funds will be spent in the fiscal year (University) in which they are received, unless otherwise noted. If there are funds remaining in accounts for the ongoing projects at May 1, the Foundation will provide only the amount needed to bring the total to the appropriate level. 9. There will be an annual report to the Foundation on each project and if it is evident that the terms and conditions have not been met, funding for that project or program will be reduced or withdrawn. 10. Proposals for new funding, increased funding for established projects, or for suggested changes to terms, conditions, and procedures of established projects, must be received by the Foundation by November 30. General Guidelines (continued) UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES 1. Proposals for funding of new projects, and recommended changes to funding and/or procedures related to on-going projects or program will be submitted to the Dean of Arts by November 1. See #4 above. 2. Annual reports for established projects will be submitted to the Dean of Arts by May 20. See #7 and #8 above. A report for a one-time or limited-term project will be submitted to the Dean of Arts by May 20 for every year in which the project is funded. See #7 and #8 above. 3. Please note that continuation of funding for any on-going Crake grant is contingent upon evidence that the terms and conditions are met each year. Thus it is important that those responsible for administering each grant understand the stated conditions and procedures. 4. The Controller will report on the status of all Crake accounts as of May 1. It is the responsibility of those who have signing authority for these accounts to speak to the Controller concerning any problems well in advance of this date. DECEMBER 2013 2/2

I. J. E. A. CRAKE AWARD, TANTRAMAR REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department at Mount Allison from 1946 to 1976, offers a renewable award to graduates of Tantramar Regional High School who register in a B.A., B.Mus or B.F.A. degree at Mount Allison University. Terms and Conditions: 1. The J.E.A. Crake Award, which can be held for four years, will be administered by the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor following the policies established by the Senate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee. 2. The Award will be given to an entering student who has a good scholarly record and who has been involved in the types of community and school activities which demonstrate a concern for others. 3. The student must be registered for the B.A., B.Mus. or B.F.A. degree. 4. Renewal of the Award will be contingent upon achieving a minimum 3.0 GPA while carrying a 30 credit load during the regular academic year (September-April). A student who has transfer credits may carry only 24 credits if a full normal course load is not needed. This applies only to the 4th or graduating year. If the student's standing falls below the accepted level, renewal will depend on the recommendation of the appropriate officer, consistent with University policies and procedures. 5. The Crake Award can be held in addition to other awards or scholarships to which the student may be entitled by virtue of high academic standing or financial need. 6. Each student who holds this Award for the first time will be provided with a copy of these terms and conditions as well as a copy of the Foundation's statement of purpose. Procedures: DECEMBER 2013 1

The Awards will be made in a manner consistent with University policies and procedures. 3. Students who do not meet the requirement for renewal may have the Award renewed at the discretion of the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor. 4. The Vice-President (Academic) will by May 31, give the Foundation the following information for each student who held the Award for the academic year just finishing, and the Controller concerning the fund: 4.1. A copy of the letter sent to Award holders each year. 4.2. A statement of the degree program (including major area of study), the course load in the previous academic year, the session GPA, the cumulative GPA and whether the award was renewed or not. 4.3. A letter of justification for renewals for students who did not meet the terms and conditions of the Award. An example would be a student who took Mt.A courses which are ONLY offered in the spring/summer such as the classical archeology courses for archeological work in Italy or Greece. 4.4. A statement from the Controller verifying that the funds in this account have been spent in accordance with the stated terms and conditions, and the status of the account as of May 1. 5. The Foundation will inform the University by June 30 of the total number of J.E.A.Crake Awards it will fund in the academic year beginning July 1. 6. Any money freed up from Awards not renewed in any year will be transferred to the J.E.A.Crake Scholarship account, and awarded in the current year as a J.E.A.Crake Scholarship, under the appropriate terms and conditions. II. J. E. A. CRAKE SCHOLARSHIP The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department from 1946 to 1976, offers scholarships to be awarded to third and fourth year students in the Humanities at Mount Allison University. It is the intention of the Foundation to provide renewable scholarships for deserving students in the upper years (third and fourth years) who have reached scholarship standing. Terms and Conditions: 1. The J.E.A. Crake Scholarship, which may be held for a maximum of two years, will be administered by the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor following the policies established by the Senate Scholarships and Bursaries Committee. 2. The student must have Scholarship standing, attained by registering in and completing thirty credits during the regular academic year (September through April) and achieving a minimum GPA of 3.5. A student who has transfer credits may carry only 24 credits if a full normal course load is not needed. This applies only to the 4th or graduating year 3. The student must be registered in a program in the Humanities, which is understood by the Foundation to include Canadian Studies, Classics, Drama, English, Fine Arts, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. 4. All other factors being equal, preference may be given to students who have completed some course work in Classics. 5. Renewal of the Scholarship will be contingent upon maintaining a 3.5 GPA. If the student's standing falls below the accepted level, renewal will depend on the recommendation of the appropriate officer or committee, consistent with University policies and procedures. 6. The Crake Scholarship can be held in addition to other awards or scholarships to which the student may be entitled by virtue of high academic standing or financial need. 7. III. J. E. A. CRAKE PERFORMANCE AWARD IN DRAMA The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department at Mount Allison from 1946 to 1976, offers an award which will be made to a student actor who, in the opinion of the members of the Drama Group, has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of the Mount Allison community. Terms and conditions 1. The Award is administered by the Director of Drama who will call for applications and convene an Adjudication Committee of the staff and faculty members of the Drama Group. 2.All graduating students are eligible to apply for the Award which is made at Convocation. 3. Applicants will be assessed on the quality and variety of acting projects during their time at Mount Allison (in the Windsor Theatre OTB, Tintamarre, improv groups, Garnet and Gold and others). Consideration will also be given to the number of performances, to academic achievement and to efforts made by the actor to practice his/her craft in the wider community. Procedures Procedures: 1. The Director of the Drama Program will: 1.1. inform the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor of the name of the Award holder. 1.2 provide the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor with a letter to accompany the cheque. 2. All graduating students are eligible to apply for the Award which is made at Convocation. 3. Applicants will be assessed on the quality and variety of performances during their time at Mount Allison. Consideration will also be given to the number of performances, to academic achievement and to efforts made by the musician to practice his/her craft in the wider community. Procedures: 1. VI. J. E. A. CRAKE LECTURE IN CLASSICS The J.E.A. Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department from 1946 to 1976, offers a grant to be expended upon a visiting distinguished lecturer in the field of Classics. Terms and conditions. 1. The Crake Lecture in Classics will be administered by the Head of the Classics Department, acting on the advice of the Department. 2. The recipient will be invited to visit the Mount Allison campus during term, and give at least one public lecture. 3 The grant will be expended on travel, per diem expenses, an honorarium and incidental expenses associated with the lecture. 4. The account for this program may carry forward a balance equal to 15% of the value of the grant. Any funds in excess of that amount will be incorporated into the standard funding for the following year. 5. The Secretary to the Foundation will be informed of the time, date and location of the Lecture at least two weeks in advance of the event. Procedures. 1. The Vice President Academic will by May 31, provide the Foundation with the following information from the Head of the Classics Department and the Controller: 1.1. A brief report on the Lecturer for the year ending June 30. 1.2. VII. J. E. A. CRAKE DOCTORAL FELLOW IN CLASSICS The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department from 1946 to 1976 offers a Fellowship to be held in the Classics Department. The intention of the Foundation is to enrich the educational experience of students of Classics at Mount Allison, to enable a young scholar to gain teaching experience and to have the time necessary to complete the doctoral dissertation. Through this Fellowship, the Foundation hopes to encourage the study and teaching of Classics in institutions of higher learning in Canada. Terms and Conditions 1.The Fellowship will be administered by the Head of the Classics Department in accordance with policies and procedures established by the University for appointment of teaching faculty. 2. The Fellowship is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the Fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations, and completed the research for the thesis, and who can be reasonably expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the Fellowship 3. The Fellow will be asked to teach one course of 3 credits each term and give a public lecture. At least one of the courses will be in the area of expertise of the Fellow. 4. The Fellow is expected to be in Sackville from September to May (except for time required to attend the occasional conference or professional meeting). This expectation should be made clear at the time of appointment. 5. The Fellowship will not be used to replace sabbaticants or faculty absent through illness or other leaves. 6. It is understood that the academic program of the Classics Department does not depend on the course load of the Crake Fellow. The Fellowship is to provide enhancement to a program which is delivered by faculty employed by Mount Allison University. 7. The fellowship is non-renewable. Procedures DECEMBER 2013 1

Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department from 1946 to 1976 offers a scholarship to enable a Mount Allison student to study Classics in Greece, Rome or the Mediterranean during the summer months. Terms and Conditions 1. The Scholarship will be administered by the Head of the Classics Department with the advice of the Department, in accordance with University policies and procedures for such awards. 2 The scholarship is intended for a Mount Allison student in second or third year who has completed course work in Classics and maintained a good academic record. 3. The grant may be used to cover expenses such as travel, accommodation and tuition incurred as a result of registration and participation in a program of study for credit at an institution acceptable to the Classics Department. Any funds remaining after tuition and travel expenses are paid may be given to the student in advance of departure for accommodation and incidental expenses. 4. The grant must be expended by August 31 of the year in which the award is made by the Department. 5. The Scholarship may not be held the same summer as a Crake Student Fellowship for Creative and/or Research Projects. Procedures 1. X. J. E. A. CRAKE DRAMA FELLOW The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A.Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department at Mount Allison from 1946 to 1976, offers a Fellowship to be held in the Drama Program. The intention of the Foundation in offering this fellowship is to enhance and enrich the educational and artistic experience of students involved in Drama at Mount Allison University. Terms and Conditions 1. The Fellowship will be administered by the Director of Drama in accordance with policies and procedures established by the University for appointments. 2. The Fellowship is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. 3. The Fellowship may be renewed for a second year. 4. The Drama Fellow will contribute to the artistic work of the Drama program, and will assume duties as decided by the Director of Drama in accordance with University policy and procedures. Teaching and/or other types of direction provided to students should be equivalent to work required to prepare and deliver one three-credit course per term. 5. The Drama Fellow is expected to make a public presentation and to be in Sackville from September to May (except for time required to attend the occasional conference or professional meeting). This expectation should be made clear at the time of appointment. 6. The Fellowship will not be used to replace sabbaticants or faculty absent through illness or other leaves. 7. The program is open to any Mount Allison graduate who has made a significant contribution to the field of theatre. 3. The recipient will be invited to visit the campus for a period of at least 3 days, give a public presentation on the theme "How I got there from here", to visit classes, interact with students and provide other workshops and /or presentations in their area of expertise. 4. The grant will be expended on travel, per diem expenses, an honorarium, and incidental expenses involved in the visit. 5. The account for this program may carry forward a balance equal to of 15% of the value of the grant. The fund is intended to enrich opportunities for students involved in theatre by inviting to campus theatre practitioners who will give workshops in their area of expertise. 3. The fund may be expended on honoraria, travel, per diem expenses and incidental costs associated with theatre workshops. 4. The account for this program may carry forward a balance equal to 15% of the value of the grant. Any funds in excess of that amount will be incorporated into the standard funding for the following year. 5. The Awards are intended to support members of faculty teaching Humanities subjects (which are understood by the Foundation to include the following: Canadian studies, Classics, Drama, English, Fine Arts, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Women s and Gender Studies) in creative and/or research projects. 3. No Award will exceed $2000.00. 4. The Foundation is prepared to support the cost of travel, accommodation and meals as allowed by University policy and salary/honorarium costs for Mount Allison student research assistants. Sawdon, journalist, publisher and long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Crake Foundation, to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to The Argosy, Mount Allison's student newspaper Terms and Conditions: 1. The Award will be administered by a Committee consisting of at least three members of Faculty, one of whom will act as Chair, and the Vice President International. The Committee will select it s own Secretary and maintain records of its meetings. 2. The Award is given to a student who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has made an outstanding contribution to the work of The Argosy, including production, editorial work, or other forms of activity. 3. The student must be in good standing and enrolled full time in the year during which the contribution to the work of The Argosy is considered. 4. The student must have a Cumulative GPA of 2.5. 5. The Award will be made and announced before March 15. Procedures: 1. The Chairman of the Award Committee will deliver the name, address and a letter to the Award winner to the Financial Aid and Awards Counsellor, who will send this letter, along with the cheque and a copy of the Foundation's statement of purpose to the Award winner. 2. XVI. THE J. E. A. CRAKE ARTS INTERNSHIPS The Crake Foundation, established by the late J.E.A. Crake, Josiah Wood Professor of Classics and Head of the Classics Department at Mount Allison from 1946 to 1976, offers Arts Internships which are intended to encourage students to participate in collaborative projects in drama, fine arts, music and creative writing. The interns will work with artist-scholars and arts technicians to gain experience, learn techniques and develop their potential as artists. Terms and Conditions 1. The awards are open to all students. 2. The projects must be collaborative in nature, in that students will work closely with the member(s) of faculty and/or staff from Fine Arts, Drama, Music and Literature Departments (English, French, German, Spanish) who mentor each project. 3. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects of an interdisciplinary nature. 4. The Internships will not be used to replace current employment opportunities for students, or for faculty research assistants. 5. Awards will be held by students in good standing who are registered in five courses. 6. Projects can be initiated by either students or faculty. In the case of projects initiated by faculty, a public application procedure will be used to ensure that all students are aware of the internship opportunity. In the case of projects initiated by students, the proposal must include the consent of the faculty or staff mentor. 7. Students will be permitted to hold internships for projects being completed for academic credit. 8. The internships are expected to involve, on average, a commitment of three to four hours per week, from November through until the end of the spring term in April. 9. Projects must be completed and final reports submitted to mentors by April 1 of the academic year in which the awards are made. 10. The Internship project will be administered by a committee representing Drama, Fine Arts, Music, Creative Writing, a faculty member at large, and one or more students.
