Area of Work Responsibility Result Required Client Consultation and Pre Treatment Assessment Complete client consultation and pre treatment assessment if needed Complete statutory documentation Delivery of a client centred service Compliance with statutory regulations Pre Operative Assess and provide advice on the management of clients with medical or other conditions which may affect the surgical procedure Assess scans to ensure clients are within the gestation limit for practising privileges and the Abortion Act Prescribe and perform cervical preparation where indicated Assess the gestation of the pregnancy and record in the client notes Safe and appropriate surgical procedure Provision of safe surgical procedure in accordance with experience and competence In accordance with Nursing Procedures Accurate record Intra Operative Ensure that all necessary drugs are correct and in date and equipment is functioning correctly before commencing the procedure Carry out termination of pregnancy by the appropriate method to evacuate the products of conception and in accordance with practising privileges granted Ensure that a record of the procedure is made in the client notes Be present in the operating theatre throughout the procedure and remain on site until the client has been assessed fit for discharge from recovery or passed to the care of another on-site doctor Efficient and safe delivery of surgical procedure Successful termination of pregnancy minimising risk Accurate, contemporaneous and legible record Maintain appropriate standard of care and availability of expertise in event of an unexpected outcome Page 1 of 8

To facilitate the abortion process as required. Area of Work Responsibility Result Required Client Counselling Assess the client s reason for requesting a termination against criteria of the Abortion Act Advise clients how procedure(s) will be conducted, complication rates and potential risks associated with treatment(s) Compliance with terms of the Abortion Act Client enabled to make an informed decision Medical Assessment Carry out full medical assessment of the client s fitness to undergo treatment services including abortion (medical and surgical), female and male sterilisation, vasectomy reversal, and contraception Identify, explore and if necessary consult with GP on clinical and other conditions which may affect the management of clients. Alert surgeons and anaesthetists as appropriate.
