2017 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Barry University's No. 2-ranked women's tennis team beat No. 3 Lynn 5-0 at Sanlando Park to win the NCAA Division II National in dominating fashion. It is the program s third national title and second in four years at the same venue. It is Barry s 17th national championship overall. Pain, a senior from Noumea, New Caledonia, beat Martina Gledacheva, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to clinch the title. I m just so happy to leave like this, Pain said. I m just so happy as a senior I stepped up and helped my team with this victory because we really deserved it. Barry swept the doubles matches to take a commanding lead. Verena Schmid and Isabel Rapisarda Calvo defeated Tereza Hejlova and Gledacheva 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Zuza Maciejewska and Dasha Salnikova wore down 11th-ranked Grace Mpassy and Diana Bogolii 8-4 at the No. 2 position. Fourth-ranked Sonja Larsen and Pain finished the Fighting Knights off with an 8-6 victory over third-ranked Rosalie Willig and Stefanie Stemmer at No. 1. Larsen moved Barry within a point of the title when she defeated Hejlova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Pain secured the title on the court right next to her, setting off a celebration at Sanlando. Barry took the first set in five of the six singles matches to put Lynn on its heels. Eleventh-ranked Salnikova took the first set from 17th-ranked Willig 6-4 and led 3-2 in the second at the No. 2 position when Pain closed it out. Schmid, who took the No. 33 singles ranking in the country into the match, won the opening set against 30th-ranked Bogolii 6-4 and trailed 2-1 in the second. Twenty first-ranked Rapisarda Calvo led Stemmer, 6-4, 4-3, at No. 4 singles. The feeling is amazing to win another national championship. We felt from the beginning this could be a great team, and we could do something special. I m so proud of the girls. On the biggest stage in college tennis, we were able to play our best match against a really good Lynn team. Of course, it s a great feeling to go undefeated. This is just a testament to how great of a team this was. They did not accept anything but winning. That s what makes them champions. We kept talking all year long about destiny. We told them their destiny was to go all the way, and be the best in Barry women s tennis. All credit to them, they made it happen, said Barry head coach Avi Kigel 2017 TEAM RESULTS Atlantic Region #1 (at Indiana (PA)) West Virginia St. 6, Edinboro 0 Indiana (PA) 5, West Virginia St. 0 Atlantic Region #2 (at Mercyhurst) Mercyhurst 6, Shaw 0 Charleston (WV) 5, West Chester 0 Mercyhurst 5, Charleston (WV) 0 Central Region #1 (at Northeastern St.) Central Okla. 5, Neb.-Kearney 3 Northeastern St. 5, Central Okla. 2 Central Region #2 (at Southeastern Okla.)
