BOX 4499 FORT EUSTIS, VIRGINIA 23604 December 18, 2016 Dear Applicant, The Hampton Roads Chapter (HRC) of The ROCKS, Inc. will award $1000 scholarships to select high school seniors in the Hampton Roads area for SY 2017-18. The scholarships are available to Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership ability in school and community, and have a desire to serve as officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. The recipients must attend a college or university, and enroll in a Senior ROTC program no later than the second semester of the school year (last day of the add-drop period) upon graduation from high school, or the recipient forfeits the scholarship. Winner(s) who subsequently accept an appointment to any of the service academies will not be eligible to receive the scholarship. Winners must be in good standing with the college or university (i.e. registered as a full-time student and provide proof of enrollment). The ROCKS, Inc. is a non-profit organization comprised of active, reserve and retired military officers. The organization was formed to provide professional and social interaction and development to strengthen the officer corps. In addition to the mission and goals of the national organization, the HRC seeks to conduct professional seminars, provide forums for the discussion of multicultural interests, and participate in activities to interface and share leadership experiences and expertise with students in the local school systems. Scholarship Awards: The chapter will present $1000 scholarships (number to be determined). Scholarship Criteria: Applicant must be a JROTC Cadet at the time of application. Applicant must complete a ROCKS, Inc. Scholarship Application Form. Applicant must submit a copy of their SAT or ACT test scores. Applicant must submit a copy of their high school transcript. Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation (one from a principal, counselor, or teacher and one from a community or civic leader). Applicant must write an essay on "Why I want to serve as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces." Essay must not exceed one page (typed). Submit a photo in uniform (digital photo fill length or head & shoulders acceptable) Instructions: Type or print on the ROCKS, Inc. application form. Type the essay (not to exceed one page).
