Investment Research General Market Conditions 23 September 213 IMM positioning Large unwind of dollar longs before last week s FOMC The latest IMM data cover the week from 1 to 17 September. Net long dollar positions back below 1 sigma. Investors reduced aggregate dollar longs from USD22bn to USD11bn in the week leading up to the FOMC meeting. Remember that the recent IMM data were collected before the Fed s surprise announcement. Positions have almost certainly been cut further since then, as also indicated by the 1% drop in the DXY dollar index. As a result of recent months change in investor sentiment, net long dollar positions have now been reduced by more than 7% from their June peak (see chart 1). Investors turn less bearish GBP. GBP/USD has appreciated by more than 8% since its July 1.4814 trough and for the first time we are also seeing a bigger change in IMM positioning. According to the IMM data speculative investors have been net short GBP since February with positioning peaking in June. Since then net shorts have gradually been unwound but the bigger shift came last week with net shorts being cut from 21 to 5%. This suggests less potential for the GBP rally to continue. Investors are beginning to like carry again, or at least hate it less. Net positions have turned long in NZD and net shorts are beginning to be unwound in AUD and CAD. The exception is MXN where positioning turned net short again.
