PRIDE IN THE JOB 2018 Media pack

CONGRATULATIONS! NHBC is delighted to have announced this year s Pride in the Job Quality Award winners. Now in its 38th year, Pride in the Job celebrates the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality. Pride in the Job recognises site managers who produce the best quality new homes, built and finished to the highest possible standards. Most importantly, homeowners who buy a Pride in the Job award-winning home benefit from a high quality product. It s no surprise that our data shows Pride in the Job winning sites have higher levels of customer satisfaction, as these homes are without doubt among the best the UK has to offer. You or your site manager has been selected from around 16,000 site managers across the UK to win just one of 450 Quality Awards. Judging for the awards is meticulous, beginning a year before the announcement of the first round of winners. As well as undergoing spot checks of the day-to-day running of their site, each site manager is assessed across 44 areas of site management, including their technical knowledge, consistency in the build process and the quality controls they have in place. Pride in the Job is now firmly established as a significant proof of distinction for the best site managers in the UK. The fact that winners are automatically entered into the competition based on the results of their work onsite is a huge endorsement for all winners. Last year NHBC registered over 160,000 new homes in the UK, site managers play an important role in delivering these. So, by recognising exceptional site managers, Pride in the Job promotes continuous improvement in the quality of new homes, year on year, for homeowners and their families to enjoy. To ensure your company/you receive all the plaudits associated with winning such a prestigious award, it is important to maximise the PR and promotional opportunities available. This media pack provides suggestions on how to publicise your Quality Award, from advertising campaigns to involving the local press. If your company has a marketing department or PR agency, be sure to pass this pack on to them to promote your winner s achievements. Congratulations and good luck in the forthcoming rounds! THE AWARDS NHBC inspectors have been visiting and assessing sites throughout the UK since July last year, and only those site managers who achieve the highest standards will be considered for a Pride in the Job Award. Site managers are placed into one of four builder categories: Small Builder Category For site managers employed by a company (or group of companies) who build between 1 and 50 homes with NHBC warranty cover per year. Medium Builder Category For site managers employed by a company (or group of companies) who build between 51 and 1000 homes with NHBC warranty cover per year. Large Builder Category For site managers employed by a company (or group of companies) who build 1001 or more new homes with NHBC warranty cover per year. Multi-storey Builder Category For site managers working on multi-storey projects (i.e. structures five storeys or more for multi occupancy) with NHBC warranty cover. This category recognises the different skill set required to run this type of site. Quality Awards Seal of Excellence Awards Regional Awards Supreme Awards Around 450 site managers across the UK receive an award. These winners then go forward to the next stages of the awards. Regionally based, around 130 awards are presented to previous Quality Award winners at a series of award ceremonies held throughout the UK in the autumn. Ten Regional winners are announced in each builder category. These winners become UK finalists for the Supreme Awards. Four site managers are announced as overall Supreme winners at a gala ceremony in London in January each year. Page 3 of 8

HOW TO PROMOTE YOUR WINNER There are lots of things you can do to celebrate and promote winning an NHBC Pride in the Job Award. A few suggestions on how to maximise media coverage are outlined below. If you would like support in this area, please contact the NHBC media team on 01908 746734 or via email at moffice@nhbc.co.uk. Send a press release Local stories are the mainstay of many regional newspapers, so the Pride in the Job Award is likely to be of interest to local journalists. Make them aware of the achievement by putting together a snappy and concise news release. A locally/regionally focused NHBC press release template is displayed on page 7 of this document along with some notes to editors that you can use. The template can be easily adapted for your purposes using this structure. Here are some tips for writing your press release: Caption any photographs sent to journalists with names and job titles Focus on the award and include information about the development in notes to editors Try to keep the headline no more than 10 words Ask the NHBC media team for a NHBC Pride in the Job Awards 2018 logo to accompany the release. Make sure that when sending your press release to the local newspaper(s) that you also send them an image of the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards 2018 logo and suitable photographs. Social media Social media is perfect for spreading the word of your achievement to your customers, stakeholders, employees, and beyond. It offers valuable opportunities to reach a wider audience and help to build and/or cement your reputation locally. Here are some tips for promoting your award socially: Use NHBC s graphics and banners in your social media updates Take photographs and/or video of your winning site and nomination Create an animated GIF for Twitter and Facebook. Remember that NHBC will also post on Twitter and Facebook, so do share any announcements that relate to you or your company. You can find NHBC on Facebook (NHBC), LinkedIn (NHBC), Instagram (NHBCUK) and Twitter (@NHBC). Through your social media channels, follow or like local journalists as well, as they may follow you back and see your posts in addition to your press release. Organise a party You may choose to celebrate the achievement of your winner by hosting a site party. It s an ideal opportunity for you to promote and engage your local community Invitations could be sent to colleagues, the local MP, the local Mayor, business contacts in your town/city, local celebrities, and homeowners who may have moved onto the site and don t forget the local media (newspapers, radio, television and digital). As part of this event, you could arrange to formally hand over the award certificate and ensure professional photographs are made available for both PR and social media purposes. Not everyone you invite from the media and community will be able to attend the event, but that doesn t mean they are not interested or won t cover it. For those that can t or don t attend, make sure you send them a postevent news release along with good photography. Promote your success in-house There s nothing like a good story to boost the morale of employees, so promote the achievements of the award in internal magazines and online. Adding prominent news articles and logos to your website is an especially important tool for communicating your success, as it is often the first place consumers will go to for information on your company. Page 5 of 8

ADVERTISING A Pride in the Job Award is a recognised sign of quality and a great way of showing potential new home buyers that your site manager has been recognised for their high standards on site and contribution to building quality new homes. It is important to mention your site manager s Pride in the Job success in the advertising that you do particularly advertisements aimed at attracting potential homebuyers to your developments. The fact that your homes were overseen by a winning site manager is a big plus, and can also give your company the edge over the competition. Remember The golden rule is that it is the site manager who wins the award, not the company for which he or she works, the site on which he or she works, or the site team; although everyone benefits by association. What you can t say: We have won nine NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Awards this year. Our company has nine Pride in the Job Quality Award winning sites. All statements made about the awards must refer to the site manager, and only to the site during the time he or she managed it Any reference made to the awards in your marketing must also clearly state the stage of awards and year in which it was won If you refer to your overall number of winning site managers, the year or years in which they won their awards must be clear. What you can say: We employ three NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award winning site managers. We employ three site managers who have received Quality Awards in NHBC s Pride in the Job campaign this year. Page 6 of 8
