Shaddrick Labeau Post 303 Fridley American Legion-Auxiliary-SAL-Riders VOLUME 6 ISSUE 6 July-August 2018 A publication of the Fridley American Legion Post 303 Memorial Day Remembering those who paid the ultimate price while defending our nation over the years were remembered at numerous ceremonies across the nation during the Memorial Day weekend May 26-28. Our Post was very busy as we participated in 4 ceremonies this year. Saturday we were at Morningside Memorial Gardens in Fridley and Bunker Hills Park Veterans Memorial in Anoka. Monday we co-hosted ceremonies in Fridley at Sacred Heart Polish National Catholic Cemetery and Islands of Peace Memorial Park with the Fridley VFW. The VFW served a light lunch after the events at their post. Special thanks to the Fridley Fire Department for raising the service flags at the Islands of Peace ceremony. Fridley family members who were read off at Island of Peace Legion Auxiliary John Banholzer Stanley Kowalski Jan Thureen Larry Hanson Donald Strasser Gladys Aumock Ed Breitenfeldt Florus Robeck Victoria Matthias Reeve Webster Harmon Goldberg Earl Steen James Ehlert Roland Theiler Herbert Hanson

Legion Commander Mike Doolittle I would like to thank all of you for your support. We as members will strive to make 303 a top-notch Legion. I would like to thank Kevin for all his assistance as we transfer from one commander to another. I would also like to thank you, the members, for your comments and suggestions on the direction of our club. And a special thanks to Bonnie as I am sure she will make walk straight and narrow. We will all walk down one path positively to achieve our goal, there is one word that does not exist in the 303 vocabulary, negativity. We will have our differences but we will resolve those together and down our path together, positively. This club belongs to the members and together we can make it great. You run the club, get motivated. Auxiliary President Bonnie Eells Well summer is finally here at last. Hope everyone has a really great summer and that it s not to busy to enjoy. I want to thank all of the volunteers that help out at the Legion no matter if it was once or every time you turn around. We would not be if it wasn t for all the help we get. If you haven t volunteered, we would love to have you on board with us. It s work but it is also fun. The Steak Fry is doing fantastic as is the Omelet Breakfast. Spring Lake Park Tower Days and Fridley 49ers, parades went very well. Hope you got to get out and see them. District Convention will be over by the time this is out. Department Convention is in July. Auxiliary made goal with our membership this year and thank you to all that paid their dues. If you haven t paid, please do so now or you will lose the years you have accumulated. Also remember that our meetings will be on the first Tuesday of each month starting in August. Auxiliary does not meet in July And August. But for anyone interested in being on a planning committee for fund raising, we will meet the first Tuesday in August at 7pm same as our regular meeting time. Everyone have a great Summer and don t forget to thank a Veteran. We have our Freedom because of them. Our web site is: FridleyALA.org E-Mail: FridleyALA@gmail.com Facebook: Facebook.com/FridleyALA Chaplain Malcolm Watson On july 4th we celebrate Independence Day, when the 13 colonies declared their severance of the ties to Great Britain. They set forth in great detail the justification for their decision. In reading over my fathers immigration papers in the spring of 1900, he had to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State of Sovereignty, and particularly all allegiance and fidelity which I owe to the King of Great Britain (Ireland was a part of the British Empire in 1900). Seventy three years ago Germany had surrendered and the Japanese leaders met with us to discuss ending the wr with them. They flatly refused to consider unconditional surrender and returned to Japan and told their people to prepare to give their lives for their country. They were ready to repel our invasion which was designated Operation Downfall, schedules for November 1, 1945. In August, President Truman authorized the use of the Atomic bomb, hitting both Japanese supply bases at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The terrible destructive power of this weapon convinced the Japanese High Command that further conflict was hopeless. A surrender was arranged for ending WWII. Our troop s ships were re-designated Operation Magic Carpet and we began transporting our men back to the states. After World War I the League of Nations sought reparations against our defeated enemies. This resulted in a terrible resentment, laying the groundwork for World War II. This time, in 1945, we brought construction crews to help Germany and Japan recover from the ravages of war. Our former enemies became our friends as a result of our Christian Love for our fellow man. May God Continue to Bless America Page 2

Anoka County Veterans Service Center. The phone number changed about a year ago. Please note the their new number 763-324-4500 to get a hold on John, Laura or any of the other service representatives Blood Drive Our Legion is sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday July 17 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 in our hall. Sigh up at the post or just stop by. The last drive netted 9 family members donation blood. Legion family members are reminded that per city of Fridley liquor laws, all members must sign in the guest sheets each day you are present in the building. This includes our post number printing 303 under post # so you are not counted as a guest of the commander. District Events July 19-21 Department Convention Rochester Aug 23-30 National Convention Minneapolis 2018 National Convention in Minneapolis Aug Friday 24 thru Thursday 30. Speaking of golf, this is the time of year when we start planning for the SAL annual golf tournament in September. This year the date is September 30th. This may be a little later than normal, but we work around the Vikings schedule. The entry fee will remain at $60 even if the location changes. We are always looking for hole sponsors ($50) and prizes so your help would be greatly appreciated. Tell your friends to mark the calendar. There will not be a SAL meeting in July and August. Jim Legion Riders Director Dan Freund Greetings from your ALR. Summer is heating up. The Riders have already participated in various rides, events and parades, including the Tower Days Parade and the 49er Days Parade. One of the largest, of many causes that the Riders support is the Legacy Scholarship Fund. Last year the Minnesota Riders contributed $200,000. The Riders will again participate in the Minnesota Legacy Ride. Minnesota has consistently been the largest contributor in the Nation and we aim to keep up the tradition this year, especially since the 100 th anniversary convention is in Minnesota. This year the Minnesota Legacy Scholarship Fund goal is $250,000. The MN Legacy Run starts with the kick-off party at the Forest Lake Legion on the Aug 2 nd and ending Sunday Aug 12that the Anoka Legion. We always welcome new Riders and Supporters. You don t have to own a Motorcycle to become a Supporter. If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the Riders please let us know. We thank our service members and vets and there families for the sacrifices they give for our freedom. Your continued support of Gambling helps us to support our Vets and our community, and is very much appreciated. Have a safe and happy 4th of July and remember to thank a vet for there service TAPS Clyde Godfrey June Membership Legion Family The January renewal notice is the last one from National for the 2018 membership year BUT unfortunately there was a glitch in the program as Fridley was 1 of 193 Posts across MN that the price reverted back to prior level. Our current membership is $45 but we reverted back to the $40 level we were at before we raised the price to cover the $5 increase National implemented January 2016. Department MN followed with a $3 increase July 2016 and District $1 July 2017. We currently stand at 337 current members of our 412 goal for 82.0% which is way short of the 85% for March 14th.. There are roughly 100 members that have not renewed form last year thus you are delinquent. Some of the Legion programs like hospitalization and emergency funds you are not eligible for since you have renewed your membership. Thanks to all of you who have renewed for 2018. Merle Augustson Another Membership year is almost half way completed. We are at 65.8 % but this leaves 1/3 of tour 2017 members that still have not paid their dues for 2018. Dues can be paid for at the Legion, through the mail, or on line at alaforveterans.org/membership. Let's work together to make this another 100% participation year. Jackie Reinking Our squadron goal this year is 61 members, yet there are over 20 that have not renewed. Please take the time and renew.
