A monthly publication from Joseph C. Herbert Post 222, The American Legion, Clear Spring, MD. From the Past Commander: 2 July 2018 Looking back on my two years as your commander, many changes can be evidenced. The myriad of good things that have been experienced can be directly attributed to the officers who served with me. I cannot say enough good things about the officers, the S.A.L. and the Auxiliary who expended a great deal of time and energy to exact an upswing in the club's fortunes. I feel a slight affinity to President Ronald Reagan because I was surrounded by officers who were ready, willing and able to perform for Post 222. When I asked an officer to chair a committee the response was always positive and the performance admirable. When I reflect on my performance, I must hang my head because I should have done more, and I applaud the officers who pushed me to perform. Former chaplain, Kenny Clopper, continued to perform his magic with his "baby" the TRIPLE DEUCE even though he had to beg for input. Keeping in mind that Kenny now resides in Texas adds emphasis to his dedication to Post 222 even after his membership was transferred to Post 179 in New Braunfels, Texas. I want to thank our former manager, Stacey Schlotterbeck for her positive contributions to our post operations and wish her a successful future. I would have to state that my biggest disappointment was my inability to convince more members to become involved in the post's operations. Another concern is the aging membership and the failure to involve younger veterans as members of the post. Please understand that Post 222's survival depends on the ability to enhance our membership with younger veterans. I have a great deal of faith in your new commander, Jim Hutson, and ask all to show him your support!! I could extend my comments by naming the people who gave so much - instead, I offer my sincere gratitude for their dedication, Ed Clopper, Past Commander 1

The Adjutant s Desk: POST 222 OFFICERS - 2018-2019 Commander Jim Hutson 301-842-3017 Sr. Vice Commander Mike Shirk 301-582-3118 Jr. Vice Commander Ed Clopper 717-597-8932 Adjutant Dick Yeakle 301-842-2972 Finance Officer Roddy Rohrer 301-842-3149 Sergeant At Arms Sam Snyder 301-842-3963 Staff Judge Advocate Bill Hose 301-582-4839 Post Service Officer Robert Carbaugh 301-842-3888 Historian Buddy Hawbaker 301-791-6234 Chaplain Phil Burgan 717-597-7922 Executive Committee Gerald Shupp 717-264-7862 Dale Hull 301-842-3202 Buddy Hawbaker 301-791-6234 The 2019 membership renewal form should be coming to you soon. Dues are $35. Again, I am going to ask that you give the on-line method a try. It saves you and the Post time and money. The people who have tried it say that they will only use it from now on. 2018 marks 70 yrs. that our Legion building has been built. 2018 also is the 50 th. yr. that Post 222 has sponsored Cub Scout Pack 117. We could still use one or two people to help with grass mowing. Only takes a couple hrs. per week. See me if you can help. We will be doing upgrades to the parking lot lights and will be installing new lights on the hill to help light the pavilion hill road and parking lot. Would like to say THANK YOU to the Activities Committee for a great job with the steak feeds and the other fund raisers they do. CONGRATULATIONS ON 50 YRS. CONTINUOUS LEGION MEMBERSHIP Congratulations to the following Post 222 members for at least 50 years continuous Legion membership. Not present: THEODORE DUNDAS LARRY LUSHBAUGH 70 YRS: CHARLES E. On the site you can find the monthly menu, archived copies of The Triple Deuce, and other information of interest to Legion, S. A. L., and Auxiliary members. Take a look. I think you ll enjoy visiting the site. Suggestions for improvements are welcome. Greg Burgesser, Web Master 5

From the Editor/Publisher Well, we ve returned safe and sound from our five week and two day 5500+ mile road trip. The weather was mostly good and we didn t have any maintenance issues. Visiting with long-term friends and older relatives some possibly for the last time brought home the reality of our own mortality. For example, one friend, a relationship going back to 1960, passed away on the 10 th of April, before we could visit him. I was glad to be able to attend the June Post 222 meeting. I took the following picture of the new jackets purchased for the Post Honor Guard; modeled by Past Commander Ed Clopper. I ve not included the menu in the July Newsletter as I sent it out earlier this week. Kenny Clopper, Editor & Publisher, The Triple Deuce 6
