Cross of Glory & West Freeborn Lutheran Churches Hartland, MN Sunday Morning Worship times: West Freeborn 9:00 a.m. Cross of Glory 10:30 a.m. From: Pastor Mark Hillmer Article Number 4 on Healing For some months our joint parishes have been holding a monthly healing service. We have always had some people coming forward for healing. But West at its annual meeting in January and Cross at it February council meeting decided to opt for the 5 th Sunday approach. This means that we will have a healing service four times in 2016 instead of twelve times. I am perfectly OK with this. As we noted when those decisions were made, we can always go back to monthly should we feel the need. The LBW, the older green hymnal used at West, had a healing service in the accompanying minister s handbook. The ELW, the newer cranberry hymnal used by Cross, has put a healing service in the hymnal. The Lutheran tradition has been strong on forgiveness, as shown in the weekly order of forgiveness that we begin our services with. But special attention has been given to healing more and more recently in many churches. A German Lutheran pastor in the 1800 s, Johann Blumhardt by name, found himself involved with one of his parishioners who seemed to be possessed by demons. Having had no training in exorcisms, he just patiently and persistently prayed for and with Gottlieben Dittus as she struggled. After two years it was all over. As the demons left they shouted, Jesus is victor. Pastor Blumhardt and his congregation were never the same. The entire area experienced spiritual renewal in the form of people confessing their sins and being healed of various diseases. The Lord has given us two children in our congregations who afflicted with autism. We have been praying for them and we are not giving up. We believe that Jesus is victor over sin, death and hell. We believe that Jesus can heal where human efforts cannot. We realize that spiritual healing is more important than physical healing. But we also believe that Jesus can--and wants to!-- heal us in spirit, soul and body.

The Joint Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 7:00 pm. at Cross of Glory JOINT COUNCIL MEETING - February 9, 2016 Present: Jerry Morstad, Matt Hoelscher, Ronnie Bartness, Tim Bartness, Rachel Knudson, Randy Light, Emily Light, Milo Madson, Dave Ausen, Steve Ausen, Roger Bakken, Bob Indrelie, Pat Ehrich, Pastor Mark Hillmer, Paul Lynne, Mark Broskoff, Corky Modene, Cathy Crowe. Meeting called to order by Corky Modene at 7pm. Devotions given by Pastor Hillmer regarding upcoming Lent, light to darkness. Pastor s report: There was a very positive response to the young adult group that met for the first time on Sunday, January 31 st. Seventeen members showed up to eat and visit. They have decided to continue meeting monthly for the next 3 months. They have formed an email group to communicate and agreed that they would like to have Pastor lead them in discussing marriage at their future meetings. Rachel Knudson read the minutes from the January joint council meeting. MSC to approve as read. Open Issues: 1. Call Process-Rachel Knudson and Martin Johnson spoke with Dennis Morreim, who is named as a reference on our Site Profile. They had a good discussion and got several suggestions for interview questions. Committee meets next Monday, February 22 @ 7pm @ CG. 2. Shared Financials-3 members from each congregation will meet and try to resolve this issue. 3. Summer Schedule-WF agreed at their Annual Meeting to once again switch service times from June- June. Lenten suppers will be at 6pm before every service. Pastor reported that we will be using the Holden Evening Prayer service. WF decided at their Annual Meeting to have Healing Services on the 5 th Sundays. CG council agreed to change to the 5 th Sunday too. Jerry inquired about the WF funeral that is to be held @ CG next week. Pastor reported the family didn t feel WF would be large enough. Caterers & WF ladies will serve the meal @ CG social hall. MSC to adjourn the joint meeting @ 7:20pm. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Crowe, Secretary Pro Tem WEST FREEBORN LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING - February 9, 2016 Present: Orlen Modene, Bob Indrelie, Milo Madson, Pat Ehrich, Mark Broskoff, Steve Ausen, Roger Bakken, Dave Ausen. The meeting was called to order by Orlen. Secretary report read by Corky. Motion was made by Mark and seconded by Dave to accept the report as read. Motion carried. Treasurer report was read by Pat. Motion was made by Steve and seconded by Bob to accept report as read. Motion carried. Old Business: Spuds and Sundaes is scheduled for Feb 28 th following the church service. We will be switching worship times with Cross of Glory for this Sunday. Corky and Dave will work on getting a signup sheet out.

Pastor Mark ordered a new cordless microphone from Rhapsody Music. It has not arrived yet and Pastor Mark was able to glue the old one and so far it is working... Stacie Madson has been working with Corky on the janitor job. She will take over duties in April. It was suggested if she needs help cleaning for an upcoming event (such as a funeral) she could call for help. At our annual meeting we had some people say they would be willing to help out. We will need to get a list of names and phone numbers for her. Corky purchased a new vacuum for the church as the old one quit working. New Business: Corky believes the drains for the basement furnace are condensating. He spoke with Dale Christopherson about it and Corky and Dave will look into what needs to be done. The Call Committee update is in the Joint Council minutes. The next meeting is February 28 th. Communion List for 2016- February-Mark Broskoff March-Dave Ausen April-Pat Ehrich May-Bob Indrelie June-Roger Bakken July- Orlen Modene August- September- October-Mike Ehrich November- December- January 2017-Orlen Modene If there are any members of the congregation who would like to help serve communion the 4 th Sunday of the month please sign up or let Corky know. If no one signs for the 4 th Sunday it will be the council person who served the 1 st Sunday responsibility. Council members missing from this meeting will be asked to sign up next month. Church Committees for 2016- Building: Mark Broskoff & Dave Ausen Parsonage: Bob Indrelie & Roger Bakken Financial: Pat Ehrich & Orlen Modene Education: Becky Ausen & Sonja Honstad Cemetery: Mike Ehrich & Steve Ausen Council members missing from this meeting will be put on committees next month. West Freeborn will host the Ash Wednesday Service and serve a light supper before the service. Serving for Ash Wednesday will be Omer & Linda Emstad, Corky & Vicki Modene, and Roger & Sue Bakken The light supper & service on Feb 24 th will be served by Mark & Sue Broskoff, Mike & Pat Ehrich, and Bob & Shirley Indrelie.

The light supper and Service on March 9 th will be served by Dave & Becky Ausen, Sonja Honstad, Steve Ausen, and Doug & Diane Jacobs. We will check with these members who were not at this meeting to verify that they are able to serve. Corky spoke with Jane Christopherson & Julie Morrison about the duties of the activity committee. He will visit with them again to get a complete list. Some of the duties include taking care of Confirmation and selling tickets for the dinner and getting a group to serve dinner, decorate the social hall for the different seasons, call groups when need them to serve, go to staff meetings occasionally on Mondays at Cross of Glory. This list will get updated after Corky s next meeting with them. Steve Ausen will check to see where the Cemetery Guidelines are at. It was suggested these be reviewed to include specifications for a cremation burial. A motion was made by Dave and seconded by Steve to adjourn. We closed with the Lord s Prayer Becky Ausen, Secretary, Submitted by Pat Ehrich Cross of Glory Trustees and Deacons Meeting - February 9, 2016 Jerry Morstad called the second half of the meeting to order. Martin Johnson and Mike Brekke were absent. Rachel Knudson read the secretary s report. The minutes were approved as read. Cathy Crowe presented the treasurer s report. She stated that JoAnn did January s finances but Allyson will be doing February s. There will be a learning curve but it seems like it s going to go well. Paul Lynne made a motion to accept the treasurer s report and pay the bills as money allows. Randy Light seconded. Old Business: 1. The case of the missing snow blower has been solved. Tim Bartness reports Aaron Gilliland has it because he has been using it to blow snow for the church. 2. Regarding the unusual bill from the Albert Lea Tribune, Jerry has determined that Cindi authorized the ad to be placed. Therefore, it is a legitimate bill and has been paid. 3. There has been no word on the boiler pump. 4. The hosts for the three Lenten meals before services have been established. The council/deacons will do two nights and Sunday School will do the third. Cathy, Kristi, Martin, Rachel, and the Lights will prepare supper for February 17 th. Jerry, Paul, Tim, Ron, and Mike will plan for March 16 th. Matt will probably have to help with the Sunday School for March 2 nd. We should plan for 50 and it only needs to be a light meal. 5. We have struggled to get enough volunteers to sign up for ushering, leaving Earl to shoulder more of the burden than he should need to. In the past, gentlemen from the congregation were assigned months to usher and would have to find replacements if they were unable to fulfill their duties. At the WELCA meeting, since it is such a challenge to get usher volunteers, it was decided to revert to the manner of assigning the roles. It can also go to teens or women if they wish to participate. New Business: 1. West Freeborn has decided that their Healing Service will change from the 3 rd Sunday of every month to the 5 th Sunday in a month. Therefore there will be approximately 4 held per year. Paul Lynne made a motion to go with West Freeborn s schedule for healing services. Randy Light seconded. 2. There was some discussion about where to designate the Easter offering. Cathy Crowe made a motion to donate it to the New Richland Area Food Shelf Capital Campaign, to help with their building renovations (which is a completely separate fund from the services they provide to those in need). Tim Bartness seconded.

3. Cathy Crowe also mentioned something else that was discussed at the WELCA meeting. In the past, the families involved with confirmation host an egg-bake breakfast after Sunrise Service on Easter. In recent years, the number of confirmation families has decreased so the large task of preparation and cooking has fallen on a few families. Next year, both confirmation students will come from one family. It was brought up to the council to get their approval for making sunrise brunch into a more informal affair, such as pastries or donuts that the kids would serve. There was a consensus among the council for this change. 4. The Albert Lea Tribune has contacted us regarding Easter advertisement. As circulation of the paper is dropping and most families searching for a church turn toward the internet rather than a newspaper, we decided not to spend the money. Further, when we struggle to make our monthly budget, this is one expense that can be easily cut. 5. Another topic discussed at the WELCA meeting was the use fees for the church. This is a subject that is occasionally reviewed and modified depending upon need. It was suggested that we increase the fees for the sound system technician, especially for weddings since that person has to be present for two days (rehearsal and wedding). We will also slightly increase non-member use fees. 6. Next Monday, a member of West Freeborn, Les Honstad, will be having his funeral at Cross of Glory as they are anticipating a larger turnout than West Freeborn can hold in the winter. The women from West Freeborn will serve the meal. Paul Lynne made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Cathy Crowe seconded. Closed with the Lord s Prayer.
