Final Beef verification weights and ID s will be due by January 15th in 4-H Online. If verification is not completed by January 15th the weights entered in 4-H online cannot be altered. Our office will be closed on Friday, December 8th for an annual office clean day. The office will also be closed December 25th 26th and January 1st observe the Holiday! We hope you enjoy time with your families! Ear tag cost is $3.00 each. Please bring check or exact amount of change to the weigh in. If you are planning to bring your beef animals to the Iowa State Fair, please contact the Extension Office for instructions. 1

Iowa 4-H Foundation Please provide a copy of your club handbooks and yearly calendar to the Extension Office ASAP. **Members must re-enroll ASAP or let your leader or the office know if you do not plan to re-enroll.** Please have your club checks for Enrollment Dues in to the Extension Office by December 15th. **Club minutes should be emailed or turned in to the Extension Office after every meeting. FSQA What: Regional FSQA Session When: Tuesday February 13th 6-8 pm Where: NICC Dairy Center Calmar, IA ***This will be the only FSQA face to face class offered for Chickasaw County*** as Iowa 4-H will be moving to a new system starting in year 2019. Please RSVP to Extension Office by February 12th. Please contact Jaci in the Extension Office prior to Feb 12th if you know you can not make this class as you may take the new YQCA system online for $12. We will look into doing a face-to-face class in the future. Please watch for a postcard coming through mail regarding new FSQA System. DuPont Pioneer Seed Grants DuPont Pioneer offers grants to 4-H clubs for local community improvement projects. The purpose is to provide seed money that clubs can use as a starting point for their project. If your club is interested in this opportunity, please visit http:www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/ pioneergrants or contact the Extension Office for more information. Application forms are due January 17th! Scholarship Opportunities Thiesen s Scholarship Through the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Theisen s is giving away (4) $1,000 scholarships to those who will be pursuing Agriculture or Ag Business degrees attending an Iowa Community College or a 4 year College. Applications are due Feb. 1st! If you are interested in applying please contact the extension office, or visit: www.iowa4hfoundation.org Each year the Iowa 4-H Foundation gives out over 90 scholarships worth more than $90,000. The various scholarship awards range in amounts from $500 to $10,000. Certain scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, ag business, animal science, journalism and STEM related studies. Former and current 4-H members graduating from high school or currently attending college are eligible applicants. Applications are Due by February 1st! If you are interested in applying please visit www.iowa4hfoundation.org/index.cfm? nodeid=31466&audienceid=1 Hixon Awards Opportunity The Hixson Opportunity Award is a half-tuition grant (estimated value of more than $15,000 over eight semesters) to be used at Iowa State University. Ideally, recipients will represent each county in the state. If you are a high school senior who demonstrates potential in ways that go beyond class rankings and test scores, you may wish to apply. Application deadline is February 1, 2017. More information can be found at www.hixson.dso.iastate.edu/ NEW!!! Subcommittees to be Formed We are looking for both youth and adults to help fill four different subcommittees. The subcommittees will plan to meet 3-4 times per year beginning after January 1. If interested please contact the Extension Office. 1) Food/ Fair Vendor help choose Fair Food Vendor(s) and plan Annual BBQ Event 1) Awards and Record Book Committee help create guidelines for Record Book Awards as well as county awards. 2) Fairgrounds and Maintenance Crew help plan fairground clean up and set up and assist with equipment. 3) Marketing and Publicity help market programs and events related to the 4-H program. 4

Opportunities Beyond the County Shooting Sports Winter Postal Match Registration for the Winter SESS Postal Match is now open. The Winter SESS is a shooting sports match that is open to any 4-H member that has passed the required course work for that discipline area they are competing in. Register online through Extension Conference Services http://bit.ly/ winterpostal17. The cost is $5.50 and the deadline to register is January 31st For question with registration please contact the ISU Registration Services at 515-294-6222. 2018 Equine Extravaganza The 2018 Equine Extravaganza will be held March 23-25 at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls. We all know that having horses requires more than riding and jumping! Get motivated to learn more about the science behind horses at Equine Extravaganza! It isn't too soon to start gathering a team! Information from previous years is available. If you have never participate before, consider attending this year and observing or jump right in! The 2018 Maize Retreat will be held April 13-15, 2018 on the ISU Campus and Clover Woods Camping Center. Youth in grades 8-12 from across Iowa will experience 4-H Healthy Living, STEM, Civic Engagement, Leadership, and Communication and the Arts programs through a Latino and Native American perspective. For more information visit https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/cyla. National Citizenship Washington Focus Trip CWF is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth, grades 9-12. Registration is now open for the June 15-23, 2018 trip. Deadline to register is January 10th. Teens from around the country gather at the National 4-H Conference Center to learn more about civic engagement and how they can be a strong leader in their community, country, and world. Dubuque County Horse Camp Get ready for another horse adventure, the Overnight Dubuque County Horse Camp is for those in 4-12th grade held on June 17-23 at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. Campers will need to bring their own horse and will participate in various daily activities. The application deadline is March 31st. Leadership Opportunities Available for Senior Level 4-H Members National 4-H Conference: National 4-H Conference is a week-long trip to our nation's capital happening April 7th- 12th. Youth stay at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD with delegates from across the nation. Youth must be in grades 9-11. National 4-H Congress: This event is held over the Thanksgiving holiday each year in Atlanta, GA. The event includes dynamic keynote speakers, community service in the Atlanta area, workshops on leadership, cultural issues, and team-building. To apply for National 4-H Congress, members must be in grades 10-11. State 4-H Council: This group of high school students works directly with Iowa 4-H Youth Development staff to represent the program across the state. They speak to local 4-H groups, represent 4-H'ers ideas to staff, and work in committees to plan the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, 4- H'ers for 4-H campaign, and 4-H promotional ideas. To apply for State 4-H council, members must be in grade 10-11. National 4-H Dairy Conference: The National 4-H Dairy Conference is conducted through the leadership of 4-H Youth Development, University of Wisconsin--Extension, World Dairy Expo, in cooperation with the National 4-H Dairy Conference Planning Committee and other friends of 4-H and the dairy industry. This opportunity is open to all youth in grades 9-12. For more information on the opportunities listed visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/ recognition-opportunities State Project Awards: 4-H'ers who have focused on specific project areas during their 4-H experience can apply for recognition for their efforts through this program. Awarded a $100 tentative award, 4-H'ers who have demonstrated mastery, leadership, communication, and service in their project will be recognized as the top in the state. 4-H'ers may apply under two project areas -- only one project area per year will be awarded. 4-Hers must be in grades 9-12. State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program: The 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is designed to promote 4-H and specifically 4-H Shooting Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training to become advocates for the program at county, regional, and state levels. Through the program, Ambassadors develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. This opportunity is for youth in grades 9-11. County Interest Groups Explorers Club The Explorers Club is a free program offered for those in 3rd-5th grade. Participants meet on New Hampton in-service school days each month. The month of November youth learned about the holidays and made holiday crafts. The next meeting will be in February. Chickasaw County 4-H Lego Club A new Lego Club started in the month of November. Pictures are below. The next meeting will be held on December 5th at 5 pm at the Extension Office. The cost is $20 if not already enrolled in a 4-H club or free if already a member of 4-H. If any youth are interested in joining please contact the Extension Office 641-394-2174. The 2017 Clover Kids Adventure is underway, Turkey and Thanksgiving was the topic for the November meeting.
