2016-17 Benchmarking Analysis Report Executive Summary In Spring 2011, Marymount s Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) developed two lists of benchmark schools to provide a stronger comparison group for the University: (1) Peer Institutions and (2) Aspirant Institutions. The Peer Institutions group comprises those schools meeting the criteria set by the SPC on a host of institutional and student variables. First added to the 2010-11 edition of this report, the Aspirant Institutions group was derived using a smaller set of similar variables and some additional criteria. Note that Loyola University New Orleans and Saint Mary s College of California were previously in both benchmark groups, but after further examination have been considered solely Aspirant Institutions since the 2011-12 edition of this report. A series of Marymount s defining characteristics were chosen to establish both the Peer Institutions and Aspirant Institutions lists. First, Marymount s Peer Institutions were determined based on the same characteristics as in 2011, including: Institutional Variables Degrees Offered At least bachelor s and master s degrees Type Independent; non-profit Degree of Urbanization Within 25 miles of a metropolitan area of over 1,000,000 Location Within 50 states Religious Affiliations Current affiliation with religious denomination Student Variables Total Headcount Between 2,000 and 6,000 total students Concentration Undergraduate 60%-90% Concentration Full-Time 60%-90% Concentration Female 60%-90% Selectivity Selecting 60% or more of first-college applicants Percent Transfer at Graduation 30% or more Residential Population 25%-75% of undergraduates Second, the characteristics used to determine Marymount s Aspirant Institutions included: Institutional Variables Degrees Offered Type On-Campus Housing At least bachelor s and master s degrees Independent; non-profit Yes Student Variables Total Headcount Between 1,500 and 5,500 total students Concentration Undergraduate 50%-90% Concentration Full-Time Greater than 50% Total First-Year Undergraduate Greater than 200 students Retention Rate (2008-09) At least 80% Graduation Rate (2003 Cohort) At least 60% (within six years) 1
Other Variables (U.S. News & World Report) Ranking Category Ranking within Category Regional University After identifying the two benchmarking institution groups, the SPC developed a list of topics that would be useful as it gauges Marymount s progress on addressing the new strategic plan. Issues revolve around five major areas: (1) Enrollment and the Student Body; (2) Retention and Graduation; (3) Academic Experience and Programs; (4) Student Life Offerings; and (5) Financial and Operational Issues. Data and Analysis: The Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness was tasked with compiling available data and information relating to the SPC s specific topics. This report draws on a variety of sources, including the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS) from the U.S. Department of Education; U.S. News & World Report; the Common Data Set; and in some cases the institutions websites. Quantitative data are generally from the 2016-17 academic year. The median (midpoint) for the benchmarking groups is presented and used to reflect institutions overall performance on the measure. Use of any other statistics (e.g., five-year average) is noted in the text of the finding. Major Findings: Enrollment and the Student Body The percentage of Marymount s student body comprising graduate students is higher than its Peers or Aspirants. Marymount has fewer transfer students entering than its Peers but more than its Aspirants. Marymount s undergraduates are as traditional (under the age of 25 and enrolling full-time) as at its Peers, but much less so than at its Aspirants, particularly regarding age. Marymount s graduate students are more likely than those of its Peers to be under the age of 25 and enrolling full-time, and equally as likely as those of its Aspirants. At the undergraduate level, Marymount is equal to its Peers but below its Aspirants in the percentage of males enrolled. Marymount s graduate students are more likely to be female than at its Peers or Aspirants. Marymount s undergraduate and graduate student populations are more racially and ethnically diverse than those of its Peers or Aspirants. Over the last five years, Marymount s average (-2%) decrease in undergraduate enrollment is equal to its Aspirants decline but lower than the average (-1%) decrease of its Peers. Marymount s average year-to-year change in graduate enrollment was negative, while it was positive at Peer institutions and remained flat at Aspirant institutions. Marymount is less selective in accepting first-college applicants than its Peers or Aspirants though enrolls fewer of them compared to its Peers and only slightly more than its Aspirants. Marymount s entering students combined critical reading and math SAT score (973) is about equal to its Peers but 122 points below its Aspirants. Retention and Graduation Marymount s five-year average retention rate of full-time, first-time undergraduates is similar to its Peers and substantially below its Aspirants. 2
Entering first-college Pell Grant recipients are less likely to graduate (within six years) from Marymount than at its Peers or Aspirants. Based on the Fall 2010 incoming freshman class, Marymount has a lower four-, five-, and six-year graduation rate than its Peers or Aspirants. Marymount s average six-year graduation rate (52%) lags slightly behind its Peers, but falls short of its Aspirants average rate over the last five years. Marymount produces more bachelor s and master s degree graduates than its Peers, but produces only more master s degree graduates compared to its Aspirants. Academic Experience and Programs Marymount is the only school among its Peers or Aspirants to award a high proportion of its total bachelor s degrees in the visual arts/design and computer/information sciences fields. Eleven (11) of the Peers and all of the Aspirants offer bachelor s degrees in foreign languages, particularly French and Spanish, compared to Marymount s language minors. Service-learning in some form is required of all undergraduates at one-third of the Aspirants, while it is applied at the course level for Marymount and a majority of its Peers. Marymount offers more worldwide study abroad countries with approved programs than its Peers or Aspirants. A majority of Marymount s Peers and Aspirants have a formal center or institute with a Community Engagement/Leadership mission, which Marymount currently lacks. Marymount has more full-time faculty than its Peers but less than its Aspirants. Marymount s full-time faculty is as likely to be of racial/ethnic minority as its Peers or Aspirants, but more likely to be female than for both benchmarking groups. Student Life Offerings Marymount is less likely than its Peers or Aspirants to offer performing arts opportunities. Unlike a majority of its Peers and Aspirants, Marymount does not have a school radio and/or television station. Although Marymount offers men s and women s triathlon similar to only a few of its Peers and Aspirants, it does not offer tennis and/or track and field for men and women as they do. Nearly all of the Peer and Aspirant institutions that offer intercollegiate men s baseball also offer women s softball, but Marymount does not. The percentage of Marymount undergraduate students engaged in campus employment (excluding Federal Work Study) is below the rate at both Peers and Aspirants, but MU students on average annually earn the same as at Peers and more than at Aspirants. Financial and Operational Issues Marymount s total cost is above its Peers and below its Aspirants. Room and board charges at Marymount exceed its Peers charges and are equal to its Aspirants charges. Since 2012-13, Marymount s average tuition increase (4%) slightly outpaced its Peers (3%) but remained equal to its Aspirants (4%). Marymount has a lower percentage of students with Pell Grants than its Peers and about the same as its Aspirants. 3
Marymount s average dollar amount for institutional grants ($16,021) to full-time, first-time freshmen is higher than its Peers ($14,824) but is below its Aspirants ($21,664). The percentage of full-time, first-time freshmen at Marymount taking out loans is less than at its Peers and about the same as at its Aspirants. Marymount s endowment per FTE enrollment ($12,031) is greater than its Peers ($10,381) and less than one-third the size of its Aspirants ($38,917). Marymount continues to have a slightly better reputation than its Peers but a less favorable one than its Aspirants, according to the U.S. News & World Report survey. For the most recent U.S. News survey year, Marymount s undergraduate alumni giving participation rate (4%) was one-half the level at Peers and one-third the level at Aspirants. The proportion of Marymount s combined total expenses for instruction and academic support (56%) is greater than its Peers or Aspirants. Average faculty salary (excluding non-salary compensation) at Peers and Aspirants rose an average of 2% over the last three years and declined by the same percentage at Marymount. 4
