Lincoln was the President of the United States during the Civil War. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation was the law signed by Abraham Lincoln that ended slavery. He was also a very important person because he inspired a lot of the troops in the (North). His most famous speech was the Gettysburg Address. In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln honored those soldiers that died at the Battle of Gettysburg. John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln on April 15, 1865. However, Lincoln is still remembered as one of the most important Presidents of all time because he freed the slaves in the United States. Jefferson Davis Jefferson Davis was the President was the President of the States of the South from 1861 to 1865. He was the President of the South for the entire Civil War. He believed that the South should be its own country and independent from the United States. He also believed that slavery should remain in the South. He wanted to give the states in the South more power than the central government in the South. Before he was President of the States of the South, Davis was a Senator from Mississippi. He was also in the army during the Mexican American War. Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was the best-known General of the Army (the South). He fought in the Civil War. The most famous battle that he fought in was the Battle of Gettysburg. Although he and the Army (the South) lost the battle to the Army (the North), Lee is still looked at as the best general that the Army had. Besides leading the Army at the Battle of Gettysburg, Lee also signed the treaty at the Appomattox Courthouse. This treaty ended the Civil War. He was also at the Appomattox Courthouse when Robert E. Lee and the Army of the South surrendered to the North on April 9, 1865. After the war, he was elected the President of the United States in 1868.

He was a big part of victories at the Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. He was really good at tricking the troops and beating them in battles. On May 2, 1863, he was shot in battle. He survived the battle. However, he lost one of his arms, and he eventually died eight days later of Pneumonia. When he died, the South lost their best general. His death hurt the Army because they were not able to win battles as easily without him commanding and telling the Army what to do.
