JOB DESCRIPTION AND PERSON SPECIFICATION JOB TITLE: Head of Business Development (maternity cover) REPORTS TO: Director of Programmes REPORTING TO POSTHOLDER: Programme Design Coordinator LOCATION: London DURATION & HOURS: Full time, 1 year PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Farm Africa is a specialist NGO working in Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya and has ambitions to be the leading provider of agriculture, natural resource management and market led solutions to small holder farmers. The Head of Business Development works closely with their Head of Business Development Counterpart, the Senior Team, Director of Programmes, Country Directors and in-country teams to deliver sustainable multi-year funding for Farm Africa s programmes. The post holder will build an effective and innovative pipeline of concepts and proposals for funding, liaising with the Director of Programmes, Country Directors and in-country teams. Working closely with the Deputy Director of Programmes, this role is responsible for originating and developing the organisation s relationships with a global range of institutional donors, trusts and foundations to identify and grow funding partnerships strategically. The role will also take responsibility for ensuring processes and systems are in place to ensure informed and strategic choices are made on bid development. KEY TASKS AND RESPONISBILITES 1. Identify and cultivate opportunities to maximise Farm Africa's restricted income (programmatic income) Scan, map and review the external environment for new opportunities and risks to programme funding plans, regularly benchmarking current performance and practice Analyse Farm Africa s priority institutional donor targets, identifying their priorities, ways of working and funding flows. Provide detailed information to develop funding opportunities with each of these donors. Research potential donors and funding partners, their interests and capacity, and define and execute the most effective way for Farm Africa to approach them for funding and in close consultation with the Head of Corporate Partnerships and Country Directors. Lead and coordinate Farm Africa s activities to maximise engagement with and secure funding from these donors. Provide support to programmes teams in-country to enable effective donor networking and relationship building and encourage and support regular contact and meetings as appropriate and required Provide support to the Director of Programmes and Country Directors in developing and maintaining an innovative and robust pipeline of programmatic ideas

Work with the Head of Corporate Partnerships on developing joint proposals and prospects for the funding pipeline Lead on early stage BD including networking events, conferences and working groups Develop relationships with contractors, NGOs and other stakeholders to build strategic consortia for grants and contracts 2. Management & delivery of institutional (and T&F) donor funding application processes Develop, oversee and deliver high quality submissions of concept notes, prequalification documentations, tenders, and proposals in line with Farm Africa s multiyear funding needs and in accordance with its internal systems and processes Co-ordinate donor due diligence and donor assessment processes Review feedback from donors and monitor fundraising successes and failures to support future planning Assess commercial and technical fit of opportunities with Farm Africa s strategy and interests Provide leadership and support to programmes staff and other senior staff to ensure that donor opportunities are proactively identified, fully evaluated, risk assessed and maximised Support contracting and grant agreements development and negotiation 3. Management and co-ordination of Farm Africa s funding pipeline Provide support to the Director of Programmes and Country Directors in prioritising funding opportunities in line with Farm Africa s overall and country level strategies Chair the organisation s pipeline committee on a monthly basis - ensuring that all stakeholders are contributing to pipeline development and proposal delivery - on time and to a high standard Manage the pipeline, including the financial forecast (bid development tool) to support Farm Africa's financial planning Work with Finance to review commercial interests and identify priorities/parameters 4. Lead the building of Farm Africa s relationships and account management with trusts, foundations and institutional donors Coordinate the relationship building of the organisation s main institutional donors, trusts and foundations, (including the European Union, DFID and USAID) Establish and maintain rigorous account management processes for all institutional donors with clarity on roles, responsibilities and coordination of all staff including Country Directors and in-country teams Act as focal point with specialism in specific priority donors Proactively review donor relationships, make recommendations for improvements in donor engagement and monitor the implementation of the recommendations Work closely with Deputy Director of Programmes and Country Directors within the organisation to ensure donor strategies and contracts are being implemented and compliance is being met Assist the Deputy Director of Programmes to ensure that the organisation meets and exceeds its accountabilities to donors and its broader stakeholders by monitoring projects progress and reporting against donor requirements Together with the Head of Corporate Partnerships assist the Deputy Director of Programmes to support, advise and build the capacity of programme teams at all levels on donor reporting and grant management requirements in order to meet and exceed donor expectations

5. Team Leadership & management Head the Business Development Team, being responsible for development and implementation of the team s contribution to the organisation s annual plans and budgets Work with the Corporate Partnerships team to develop new partnerships and manage existing partnerships Develop strong working relationships with other teams in the organisation, more specifically with regards to communications, staffing, resourcing, budgeting, programme support and programme quality and impacts Line-manage the team and manage occasional consultants Be an active member of Farm Africa s wider leadership 6. Be an active member of Farm Africa s wider leadership Support the Chief Executive, Senior Team and Country Directors in building donor relationships and networks Assist the Chief Executive, Directors Group and other senior colleagues to contribute to Farm Africa s overall direction and development Build and maintain a regular dialogue with senior programme colleagues in all Farm Africa s countries Represent Farm Africa externally in appropriate contexts 7. Coordinate approach to securing co-funding in line with contract requirements Lead the identification of opportunities for obtaining funding from trusts and foundations to help cover core costs and co-financing need Support the Directors Group in deciding capacity to take on and fundraise for cofinancing requirements as appropriate Work with the finance team to monitor progress against co-funding targets and associated risks Work with the Director of Fundraising and Head of Corporate Partnerships to develop co-funding strategies and asks 8. Administration Develop systems and processes for knowledge management and capture Working with the Deputy Director of Programmes and the Regional Programme Support Manager, contribute to expansion of roster and identification of key experts
