It s once again time for every unit to begin the program planning process to ensure a successful, quality unit program in 2014-2015. As part of our annual council Program Kickoff, each unit will be provided a copy of this Program Planning Calendar & Resource Guide to assist in the planning of a successful program in the upcoming Scouting year. This guide and calendar will provide you with the list of many of the scheduled council and district program activities, training opportunities, and fundraising events that your unit will want to include in its program. As you begin the program planning process, you will want to be sure that your unit program includes a variety of district and council activities, including your participation in summer camp, Scouting for Food, University of Scouting, and other training programs and activities. Be sure to make your unit s program FUN, memorable and exciting as you work along Scouting s Journey to Excellence trail. Emergency Procedures If you experience a serious emergency in the course of your Scouting program, please use the following guidelines: For Youth Protection issues Contact your district professional, the director of field service, or the Scout Executive. For Accidents or Serious Injury Call the Daniel Webster Council Service Center during business hours. After hours, contact your district professional or a member of the council management team. If the situation warrants, call 911. Have an incident report ready with the following information: What is the nature of the problem? Who is involved? Where are you? What is being done? Directions McININCH SCOUT SERVICE CENTER: From the South: take exit 6 off I- 93 to Candia Road. Turn right off ramp to lights at East Industrial Park Drive, turn right. Proceed 1/2 mile, take right onto Holt Ave. At top of hill, turn left into parking lot. CAMP CARPENTER: Site of Cub Scout World, the Manchester Scout Shop, the Lawrence L. Lee Scouting Museum/Max I. Silber Library. I-93 to 293/101 West to South Willow Street exit. Travel south past the Mall of NH to Huse Road. Turn left and proceed one mile to Mooresville Road, turn right. Go to end (South Mammoth Road) and turn right for.3 miles to Bodwell Road. Turn left and follow for 1.7 miles. Camp Carpenter/Museum is on left. GRISWOLD SCOUT RESERVATION: From North: Route 16 to 28 to 140 in Alton to Gilmanton Iron Works. Follow signs from there OR I-93 south to exit 20 to 140 towards Belmont to Gilmanton Iron Works. Follow signs from there OR Route 3 to 28 to 107 to Gilmanton to 140 to Gilmanton Iron Works. Follow signs from there. CAMP BELL: Follow Hidden Valley Directions. Once in camp follow signs on internal roads to Camp Bell. From West: I-93 to exit 20; then follow direction as above. PIERRE HOGE SCOUT CAMP: From Walpole, NH (on Connecticut River in Southwest, NH): At intersection of Routes 12 and 123 go east to Walpole Valley Road. Take Walpole Valley Road approximately 3 miles to Eaton Mountain Road. Take Eaton Mountain Road approximately 1.5 miles to the entrance of the reservation. CAMP WHIP-O-WILL: Daniel Webster Highway to the center of Merrimack. Travel 1 and a half miles west on Baboosic Lake Road. Take left at fork. (Turkey Hill Road) At T turn right on McQuestion Road. Travel 1/4 mile to first left turn, which is Wilson Hill Road. Go about 1/2 mile to Rivergate drive on left. Camp is at the end of Rivergate. UNITY PROGRAM CENTER: From the east travel Route I-89 north toward Lebanon to Route 11 (exit 12) west to Newport then left onto East Unity Road. Turn right onto Lempster Road which becomes 2 nd NH Turnpike into Unity. Turn right onto Mica Mine Road (opposite the Unity Elementary School) and travel 1.5 miles to the Unity Program Center at Chandlers Mills Road on the left. From the west from Claremont, travel the 2 nd NH Turnpike to Unity, and follow the directions above. 7

Commissioners www.nhscouting.org/jte "Scouting's Journey to Excellence" is the Boy Scouts of America's performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of units, districts, and councils. It is a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA. The criteria for JTE are different for Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Varsity Scout teams, Venture crews, and Sea Scout ships. Use these benchmarks to help build a vision of your unit s Ideal Year of Scouting. Track your progress toward the established goals and go for the gold! www.nhscouting.org/commissioner Commissioners are district and council leaders who help Scout units succeed. Unit commissioners coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, and Venturing crews. Commissioners help maintain the standards of the Boy Scouts of America. They also oversee the unit charter renewal plan so that each unit reregisters on time with an accurate number of youth and adult members. Roundtable commissioners plan and conduct monthly roundtable meetings in the district that provide unit program training, council and district information and fellowship for adult volunteer leaders. 8

Program Planning Units that plan, promote and carry out their Ideal Year of Scouting offer the best possible experiences for more youth, keep youth in the program longer, have more parental involvement, spend less time fundraising, and are recognized in the Journey to Excellence program. Spending the time planning your program up-front helps to eliminate frustration and wasted time during the Scouting year. The idea is to make Scouting simpler, easier and more fun! If your unit needs assistance during the planning process, consult your district commissioner staff, members of your district committee, or your district professional. All of these people are dedicated to ensuring that your unit provides a successful Scouting program. The Six Steps for the Ideal Year of Scouting: 1. Plan: Work your way through this guide and the other resources available to you to map out the activities, camping, advancements, and training you ll need for your Ideal Year of Scouting. 2. Fund: Determine the expenses from all the activities, camping, advancements, and training your unit wants to do, then decide how much fundraising your unit must conduct to cover those expenses. Established fundraisers, like the popcorn sale, are in place to assist your unit with raising the funds it needs. 3. Grow: When you have a good plan, communicate it to your current and potential Scouts to engage more youth in the Scouting program, along with their parents to help make it all happen. Membership growth is a year-round process. 4. Train: Plan to promote training sessions to your current and new leaders. Every Scout deserves a trained leader! 5. Re-charter: Re-register your unit on-time, starting the charter renewal process in October and turning-in the completed paperwork in December. 6. Assess: Use the Journey to Excellence worksheet to measure the success of your plan and your Ideal Year of Scouting. 9

Recruiting www.nhscouting.org/membership In order to offer the Scouting program to all interested young people, all units are encouraged to have a year-round membership plan. Pack joining nights, Webelos-to-Scout Transition, peer to peer activities, and troop and crew open houses are all ways to help units recruit youth. There are many simple activities that units can run to encourage new families to join Scouting, to increase involvement, and to spread the word that Scouting is in the area. Visit the link above to view recruitment activity ideas and links to online resources to learn more about these types of recruiting events. Youth and adults interested in joining Scouting can also visit www.beascout.org to learn more about Scouting and find a pack, troop, team, or crew near them to join. Unit leaders should make sure their unit Google pin with contact information is active and current on this website so those interested in joining will be able to contact them. Training www.nhscouting.org/training All Scouts and Venturers deserve the support and guidance of formally trained adult volunteers! BSA training prepares adults to apply their skills and talents in accordance with the aims and methods of the Scouting program. Guidelines for which courses you should take can be found on the training page of the Daniel Webster Council website. For your convenience, a number of courses are available online. For classes that require hands-on practice or open discussion, your District Training Team organizes courses in your area. You ll find dates for these trainings in this calendar. 10

CAMP PROMOTION www.nhscouting.org/camping Help keep the outing in Scouting and make sure every Scout is encouraged to go to summer camp! Council provides a number of resources and opportunities to help you get Scouts and Venturers to camp: Cub Scout Fall Blast/Family Camping Weekends at Camp Carpenter and Hidden Valley Scout Camp on October 4-5 & October 18-19 at Camp Carpenter. November 20, 2014 Summer Camp Kickoff: All adult volunteers and senior youth leaders are invited to this presentation on 2015 summer camping opportunities. Meet the camp directors, learn what s new, and find out how to stay on track with preparations for camp! Online camp promotion presentation request: Every unit should invite a trained camp promoter to visit them during a meeting or event where Scouts and parents are together. Ideally these visits take place in November, December, or January so that families get the information they need as early as possible. Having a visitor talk about camp makes the presentation a special event! You can request a presentation with the Camp Promotion tab on the council website camping page. Cub Scout Blue & Gold Banquet Camp Promotion Placemats: Click the Camp Promotion tab of the Council website s Camping page to order placemats for Blue and Gold Banquets that are printed with information about all the Cub Scout summer camping options. These are available in any quantity requested free of charge a great way to reinforce the summer camp message with your Cub Scouting families! Printed Promotional Material: Camp brochures will be mailed direc tly to families in early 2015 to help spread the word about summer camp! 11

Friends of Scouting Scout Nights www.nhscouting.org/fos Friends of Scouting is a critical annual fundraising campaign that assists in offsetting program costs and providing quality service. The true cost of Scouting is much greater than what local dues and event or camping fees cover. All packs, troops, teams, and crews are encouraged to participate in the campaign in the first quarter of every year to give families the opportunity to contribute. Requests are also made to local business and community supporters. Please ask your employer if they would match your gift. Schedule your presentation as part of your annual calendar planning and encourage participation everything helps to support a strong Scouting program in New Hampshire. www.nhscouting.org/activities To provide your unit with some exciting program options, Daniel Webster Council partners with some of the best names in family entertainment to offer special Scout rates for shows and sporting events and exclusive Scout programs to get up close or behind the scenes. Popcorn Sale www.nhscouting.org/popcorn The annual popcorn sale is the largest council-wide fundraiser to support all units in providing a quality program. Participation in the popcorn sale not only helps your unit, but it helps keep costs low, starts new programs, extends the reach of Scouting, assists with camperships, facilitates camp improvements and provides training courses for leaders. It s simple, easy and fun the council provides the training, sales forms, marketing, a great incentive program, and much more. Sell in uniform people will invest in Scouting and the Scout s program. No other product is currently authorized for sale in uniform. Raising Money for Camp Summer camp is often the highlight of a Scout s year, and more often than not attending summer camp will keep a Scout in the program longer. Make your plans and reservations early this often guarantees the lowest fee charged and will give all families time to prepare for the outing. Budget a portion of all fundraising activities to support your unit s camp experience. Popcorn (www.nhscouting.org/popcorn) and Camp Card Sales (www.nhscouting.org/campcard) are great opportunities telling the story of the need for camp will guarantee your success. Make it fun with incentives most Scouts would appreciate a new piece of camping gear for their time away. 13

SUMMER CAMP CUB SCOUTS: Daniel Webster Council offers four unique summer camp programs for Cub Scouts and Webelos! CAMP CARPENTER CUB WORLD: Cub World RESIDENT CAMP: For boys entering grades 2-5 in the fall, Cub World Resident Camp is a five-day, four-night experience. Scouts can attend with their pack, or sign up on their own as provisional campers. Cub World AKELA CAMP: For boys entering grades 2-5 in the fall and a parent or guardian. This three-day, two-night experience provides Scouts a chance to experience summer camp with a parent at their side. Cub World DAY CAMP: For Tigers, Cubs, and Webelos entering grades 1-5 in the fall. Tiger Cubs attend with an Adult Partner, and parents are invited to volunteer on day camp staff and receive a great discount on the camp fee. Packs sending multiple Scouts are also encouraged to send adult volunteers. Cub World Day Camp is a five-day program that introduces Scouts to many of Cub World s exciting program areas. DAY CAMPS AROUND THE STATE: If Camp Carpenter is too far for your Scouts to travel for Day Camp, check out one of six days camps held across NH. These five-day programs are very similar to what s offered at Cub World, with the benefit of being closer to home! 66

BOY SCOUTS AND VENTURERS: www.nhscouting.org/camping Boy Scouts and Venturers can choose from a wide variety of programs at GRISWOLD SCOUT RESERVATION: Hidden Valley Scout Camp: Offers a traditional summer camp setting with Dining Hall meals where scouts can work on merit badges and other advancement opportunities in the morning and exciting troop activities in the afternoon and evening. New Scouts just crossing over from Webelos are welcome to participate in the First Year Camper program! Camp Bell: With an extra focus on Patrol Method, Scouts of all ages at Camp Bell work together to plan and prepare meals and choose their activities as a patrol. Camp Bell offers both living history programs, like Mountain Man and Logging Camp, and activities not often found at Scout camps, like an equestrian program, water skiing, and a climbing gym! GSR High Adventure and Specialty Programs: Griswold Scout Reservation offers a wide variety of experiences for Scouts and Venturers up for a special challenge. SPOKE, Valley Voyageur, and White Mountain Voyageur offer backcountry adventure, including things like real rock climbing and kayak touring. National Youth Leadership Training is also offered for up and coming youth leaders. REGISTRATION: Watch for online registration in 2015. Packs, troops, teams, or crews attending as a group choose one adult to register for them. Families can register their Cub Scouts for Day Camp or Akela, or their Boy Scouts or Venturers for High Adventure or Specialty Programs. Provisional Camping is an option for individual Scouts to attend a resident camp program at Camp Carpenter or Hidden Valley when they can t go with their home unit. High Adventure In addition to the adventure opportunities available at Griswold Scout Reservation highlighted above, Daniel Webster Council encourages participation in high adventure programs offered at the national level by Boy Scouts of America. Philmont Scout Ranch: Each summer, Daniel Webster Council sends Scouts and leaders to New Mexico on a first-come, firstserve basis for a 10 day backcountry experience at Philmont Scout Ranch. Trip Planning Scouts safety during unit activities begins with you! BSA has developed a useful tool for making sure you are prepared whenever Scouting takes you away from home: The Tour and Activity Plan. This resource is available at www.myscouting.org under the Unit Tools tab. (You will first need to create a MyScouting account in order to log in.) Completing a Tour Plan is required before undertaking any activity that includes: Traveling outside of council borders, even to BSA properties or sponsored events Aquatics activities of any kind (even swimming!) Climbing or Rappelling Shooting Sports Use of motorized vehicles for program, even if only by adults (e.g. snowmobiles, boats) Orientation flights (short, non-commercial flights from a single airport) While the above activities REQUIRE a Tour Plan, it is recommended that you complete one for any Scouting event, as it is an excellent planning tool that guides you through BSA supervision and training requirements as well as transportation logistics. BE PREPARED complete a Tour Plan!
