Los Angeles Valley College College Bulletin March 1-7, 2009 LAVC Campus News Pool Open for Public Lap Swimming and Lessons Starting March 1 Beginning Sunday, March 1, the Community Services swimming pool will be open the public for lap swimming and swim lessons. The LAVC Community Services Department offers year round lap swimming and swim lessons to the public through the Community Education Swimming Program. Special Lecture by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Daniel Walker Howe The LAVC Arts Council will present a free lecture and question and answer session with author and Nobel Prize winner Daniel Walker Howe on Tuesday, March 3 at 1 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Howe will explore topics related to his 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848. For more information, contact (818) 778-5620. You re Invited to the Fulton Entry/Monarch Square Flag-Raising and Dedication Ceremony LAVC will hold a flag-raising and dedication ceremony for the recently remodeled Fulton Entry and Monarch Square on Wednesday, March 4 at 12:30 p.m. at the flagpole near the main Fulton Avenue entrance. LAVC Hosts Junior Achievement s Money & Me Conference The Junior Achievement of Southern California will hold its annual Money & Me Conference for high school students at LAVC on Friday, March 6 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This financial education conference for local high schools will take place in Monarch Hall and several classrooms. The keynote speaker for this year s event will be Councilmember Tony Cardenas. For more information, call (818) 947-2927. STRS Retirement Workshop at LACCD Downtown Office The LACCD will hold a Retirement Workshop for STRS Members who are planning on retiring in Spring or Fall 2009 on Friday, March 6 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the LACCD Board Room at 770 Wilshire Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles. The topics to be discussed include District resignation procedures, CalSTRS retirement forms, STRS Express Benefit form, and retiree health benefits. Final Information Session for Summer Study in Montpellier, France The LAVC Study Away Program will hold a final information session for its 2009 Summer Study Away Program to Montpellier, France on Saturday, March 7 from 12 noon-2 p.m. in Foreign Language 113. The program will visit the South of France from June 12-July 11, 2009 and costs $3300 per person (not including flight and food). Want to Win a Prize for Being a Top Walker? LAVC employees who participated in the recent LACCD Walking Challenge will have a chance to win prizes! There will be are travel kit prizes, which have been donated by Advantage Fitness, for the first 200 people and big prizes (to be delivered and set up at home) for the top three LAVC walkers. All you need to do is to send a copy of the steps you recorded each day (November 19-December 19) to Katrelia Walker at the District. You can either email a screen shot of your steps recorded each day at SparkPeople.com along with your name, employee number and our team name Valley College Walk 08, or interoffice your daily step record in the log book that was provided for the challenge and write your name, employee number, and LAVC on the front of the log book. CNN s Your $$$$ show interviewed Lennie Ciufo for a segment on the LAVC Job Training Center s Advanced Manufacturing Training Institute. The story by CNN Correspondent Thelma Gutierrez, which originally aired on Saturday, February 21, highlighted the Institute s advanced manufacturing job training program, which is funded by a Department of Labor grant and managed by the LAVC Job Training Center. Are you a recent high school graduate and need money for school? Apply today for a CalGrant and you can receive up to $9,708 in tuition and fees and can be used to help pay for textbook and living expenses. To qualify, you must have a financial need, have at least a 2.0 GPA and apply by the March 2 Cal Grant application deadline in addition to meeting other requirements. All high school seniors and recent high school graduates who qualify to receive a CalGrant will receive one. The ASU will be taking a limited number of LAVC students to Sacramento, CA to attend a student advocacy rally on Monday, March 16. This is a one-day trip with the airfare and meals paid by the Associated Student Union (Student Rep. Fee). Only the first 45 students to submit all the necessary forms to Elizabeth Ortiz by Friday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m. will be selected to attend. Participants must also attend a mandatory meeting on Friday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m. in Campus Center 104. The Office of Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield is seeking college-level, community-oriented and proactive interns (both full-time and part-time) for a variety of projects. Representatives from many well known public and private businesses (including ChildCare Careers, the Los Angeles School Police, Musicians Institute and Sears Home Service) will be available to talk with job seekers. LAVC is holding a logo contest for the college s 60th Anniversary. The winner will be selected from a panel of faculty, staff, college administrators and alumni. The Valley Symphony Orchestra will present its next concert entitled In Memoriam: Handel and Hadyn on Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theater. This performance will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel and the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn. The program will also feature the music of Mozart, a good friend of Haydn s. Tickets are $29 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. The LAVC Emergency Services Department will hold a job fair for corrections and homeland security careers on Wednesday, March 18 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Monarch Square. The LAVC Music Department will present a Spring Serenade Concert on Sunday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Mainstage Theater. In this musical celebration, the LAVC Vocal Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of Glenn Carlos) will keep your feet tapping as they present music that ranges from swing to funk. The LAVC College Choir (also under the direction of Mr. Carlos) will perform a selection of songs featuring grooves from Central, South and North America with percussion ensemble. Lastly, Dr. Michael Arshagouni will conduct the Philharmonic Choir, a choir from Pierce College, and a professional orchestra and soloists to perform Franz Schubert s beautiful Mass in E flat. Tickets are $15 for general admissions and $10 for students and seniors. For more information, contact (818) 947-2346. CSUN Offers a New Educational Leadership Doctoral Program. The Michael D. Eisner College of Education at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is now accepting applicants for its new doctoral program (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership for community colleges. The 3-year Community College Cohort program, which will start in Fall 2009, is designed for practicing or aspiring administrators who will be able to complete many of the assignments and conduct research in their own work settings. The goal of the program is to create a network of community college administrators prepared to effect profound change in teaching and learning that leads to improved student achievement. The LAVC Family Resource Center is offering a free baby clothes exchange for parents needing clothes for newborns to size 3. Anyone interested in exchanging, picking up or donating any clean, gently used baby clothes in good condition, should visit the Family Resource Center located in Bungalow 49. The deadline to submit documentation of expenses is March 31, 2009 to receive reimbursements for your medical or child care expenses. If you do not submit your reimbursement form by March 31, 2009 you will forfeit any remaining funds in your 2008 FSA account.
