JANUARY 2000 The year begins with SHREVEPORT enjoying liberty in Valletta, Malta while on a Mediterranean deployment cruise. After a brief boost of liberty, SHREVEPORT gets underway enroute the Persian Gulf. Successfblly transiting the Suez Canal, SHREVEPORT chops to Commander, Fifth Fleet. FEBRUARY 2000 SHREVEPORT continues to operate in the Persian Gulf. A port visit to Aqaba, Jordan provides real world force protection training. By the middle of February, SHREVEPORT's mission in the Persian Gulf is complete, and the transit back through the Suez Canal begins. Midway through the transit, SHREVEPORT runs aground. Damage is extensive and requires towing to complete the transit. SHREVPORT is towed through the canal and to Haif& Israel to effect repairs. MARCH 2000 Captain, W.D. Valentine relieves CAPT E. W. Herbert, becoming SHREWPORTS 19th Commanding Officer. Repairs continue while in Haifa and are completed by mid-month. Steaming to Rota, Spain, SHREVEPORT completes her turnover and chops back to Commander, Second Fleet. The 10-day transit back home begins, and the crew is anxious to return to homeport. APRIL 2000 Finally across the Atlantic Ocean, SHREVEPORT arrives at Morehead City, NC where a farewell is bid to the embarked marines. A short one-day transit back to Norfolk, VA, SHREVEPORT is home. Families await the ship at the pier and celebrate their spouses' arrival home. POM begins and crewmembers begin catching up with their families. MAY 2000 After having returned h m deployment SHREVEPORT continues post overseas movement stand down. The crew takes some much deserved time off and spends time getting reacquainted with their iimilies. Following POM, SHREVEPORT left for Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown to offload ammunition not used during her deployment. JUNE 2000 - AUGUST 2000 SHREVEPORT spends the summer at Metro Machine in Portsmouth VA receiving some much needed repairs. Focal points included habitability upgrades in 4 marine troop heads, overhaul of ballast tanks, damaged well deck wood replami, boiler overhaul, Air Conditioning modifications, and numerous pump overhauls. In addition to the maintenance work that never stops, sailors take time to fiuther their education. Pace

courses are brought into the yards and sailors are able to take college courses in basic academic skills, Reading, History, English and Math. The training cycle starts ramping up. SHREVEPORT schedules visits with Afloat Training Group Atlantic to focus on learning how to train sailors in individual mission areas. During this time SHREVEPORT also begins a focused reenlistment program spearheaded by the Commanding Officer,CAPT. William D. Valentine, JR. The purpose of this program is to educate sailors about the benefds of staying Navy and retaining our best and brightest eniisted sailors. The last week of August is spent underway in Virginia Capes conducting sea trials. During this time SHREVEPORT also completes the first phase of well deck certification. SEPTEMBER 2000 SHREVEPORT is operational again. After the tumuituous yard period, the crew began transitioning fiom the maintenance environment to operating a naval warship. Operations and training in the Virginia Capes area took off at full steam s&rting a very busy Interdeployment Training Cycle. Evolutions such as mass casualty, main space fre, underway replenishment, flight quarters, ballasting operations, and gun exercises transformed from a classroom lecture to real time ops. The crew performed all evolutions superbly, and is showing signs of its outstanding potential. The second week, SHREVEPORT completed it Aviation Certification and Aviation Readiness Evaluation/ SHREVEPORT's flight deck and crew are now M y qualified to conduct every aspect of helicopter evolutions. During the last week of the month SHREVEPORT left fbr Newport, RI to participate in School Ship. This period allows for fitture division officers and department heads the opportunity to visit SHREVEPORT and learn lessons &om the crew, better preparing these new officers for the challenging job of being a division officer or department head. September saw the hits of the newly fbrmed retention committee. On September 28, SHREVEPORT reenlisted 46 sailors in a memorable ceremony on USS CONSTITUTION in Boston, Mass. Sailors were reenlisted by VADM Foley, COMNAVSURFLANT, provided tours of USS CONSTITUTION, enjoyed a gourmet buffet, and spent the remainder of the day taking in the sights of Boston. OCTOBER October continues the IDTC fbcus. Underway days are more fkequent and a lot busier. The focus has started to shift fiom individual acccomplishments to integrating

into a team fbr mission completion. The crew pulled together to complete the challenging evolutions of Engineering Certification and Command Assessment of Training and Readiness (Second Phase). NOVEMBER November begins with her first amphibious exercise since deployment. SHREVEPORT left for Onslow Bay, NC to support Marine Corps reservists in AAV operations. AAV ops included both static and underway launches, and provided valuable tr&ing for sailors and marines alike. Next SHREVEPORT was off to enjoy liberty in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In addition to liberty, crewmembers conducted community relations projects with for local children. Enroute to Florida, SHREVEPORT conducted two burial at sea ceremonies, one of which was for a sailor who served onboard USS COLE during her unfortunate terrorist attack while deployed in the Persian Gulf. On her way back to home, SHREVEPORT stops of at Onslow Bay, NC for 8 days of AAV operations and Naval Weapons Station, Yorlctown for ammunition onload, completing her first Navigation Check Ride enroute. DECEMBER 2000 After spending the first week in homeport. SEIREVEPORT is underway conducting training exercises in the Virginia Capes. The exercises have become, more complex, integrating engineering castdies, fires, personnel injuries, flight operations, and combat systems employment simultaneously. To complete the underway SHREVEPORT conducted her Initial Assessment, an inspection that focused on Engineering Department's ability to maintain propulsion and the crew's ability to combat major fires at sea. December saw SHREVEPORT back to the Virginia Capes. The crew's first order of business was to earn the Well Deck Certification. This required tireless effort by Deck Department to ensure all equipment and material were in top working condition. It also required top-notch shiphandling to perform challenging evolutions such as emergency LCAC recovery. Successfully completing her operations, SHREVEPORT returns to Norfolk, where the crew enjoys the remainder of the year in holiday stand down. An outstanding year completed, SHREVEPORT looks to the next to continue honing her skills to prepare for the next deployment.
